HFV Pune meet

I envy you guys for getting to hear the AW120 electrocompaniet (who's is that anyway?).
It's a close relative model to the electrocompaniet ECI-2 but still in production, while the ECI-2 is out.
Most of the newer electrocompaniets do not have the tonality of the older generation but the aw120 supposedly
still does. But I've had bad luck with getting my hands on an ECI2 and the AW120 is way out of my budget since
it's still in production presently.

Hey Guys,

Had a blast yesterday. A very very special thanks to our gracious host Viki and his family. Thanks also to Denom/Santy and others who worked hard pairing and wiring the stuff and while we chatted and had fun. Sono, thanks for organizing the food and making review notes on your laptop.

The S30, Pioneer, Norge etc. were a pleasure to listen to and are excellent VFM products. Shall leave the critical reviews to the gurus.

@hari, excellent speakers! "Darde dil" really sounded like a live concert. I now want the track and you've piqued my curiosity of TL speakers.

@omishra, you rock man! Seriously. Most of what you said went over my head :-)

Finally, thanks to all those who attended especially to those who got their gear so we could listen.

- Ravi

Rohit, AP are tailor made for specific synergy. Also they are tube pre based. So sound signatures are different. It could not be compared as its different gear. I like warmness of your pre-power combo which will be good for analog gears. For digital and high speed music tubes generally soften it down. So you need matching speakers for this. Think from this point of view, its good for live classical music without being harsh.
AP are good and Pass B1 is generic gear - could be fitted anywhere.

Yes, your observation is spot on and inline with my listening experience till now. :) And I humbly take your word for it given your experience! :)

Even in my system if I play really fast or digital music then it does not add that extra (punch) which we get in solid state amps. Due to same reason however in whatever I have listened till now I have personally found it to bring very subtle nuances in kind on music I subscribe to - 99% of the time (Semi classical/ghazals/quawalis/soft music/70s rock).

BTW I have observed that when the system plays for some time say 20-30 minutes then it starts sounding better and start flowing freely and very clean sound. Dont know why? Maybe we need to set the right "mood" first like in an classical music performance they start with initial aalap and then the main performance :) Haha.. :) Yesterday I tried playing Nusrat Fateh Ali khan and he too was sounding completely lost (all due respect)! :)
Also another imp parameter is the holographic imaging which I feel is *considered* strength of these amps (I can vouch for that having heard and experience it :) ) I have to sit in specific position (sweet spot) to actually see this in my setup.

I did not see any of above happen yesterday :) My only wild guess it these amps may require proper pairing/setting up. I dont have that much expertise yet to pin point exactly why? :)
Go figure it out.. ;)

Maybe a more focused and down tempo listening session should perhaps help. :)

I feel it is best to leave it open to interpretation and I would love to remain as unbiased as ever in best interest of my own musical journey. :)

Enjoyed the meet and a day well spent.

The highlights of the meet for me were:
1. Putting faces to hifivision "handles" :)
2.......!

that was really the highlight for me - few of the "handles" turned out to be ex-colleagues and also one of them turned out to be an hostel-mate.

Thanks everyone for making the meet a resounding success

It was good to see that my CA S30 got some audiophile's compliments. I found it to be very good in my environment(150 sqft room), however sound appeared distorted even at medium volumes in the HFV meet.

It was quite surprising to see it getting distorted as max power handling is 100W so paring with 50W amp should have been good. But it was not so.

Pioneer were good as well, but HF was missing IMO.

Viki's ProAc 140 towers were impressive and they indeed produced engrossing sound with extremely good bass and details. I liked the Norge amp and Focal for what they offer for the price, they are definite upgrades for me. Not to mention, Pass B1 pre-amp which sounded excellent. As a novice, regarding DAC, Pre amp, Power amp, integrated amp, cables and interconnects etc, I was not really able to form an opinion as such. However I enjoyed marantz DAC and audio gd DAC comparison which was literally inconclusive.

PS : None of the PSB sounded great at their price point. Especially 2 bookshelf speakers and ANC(Active Noise Cancellation) headphone of whooping Rs 26k(If I remember it correctly)

hahaha that sounds a bit like the good old "2 brothers getting lost in kumbh ka mela" hindi movie story :D ...

BTW Pioneer BS41(along with the BS21) have always been really good VFM audiofile bookshelves in the US...Problem is as they are quite heavy & have no official distributer present in India so its price gets hicked up quite a bit here... They are still VFM but it would have been sweet if they had been available officially...Many a times having a official distributer means a smaller diff between the US price & indian price(for example polk, kef, Def Tech, etc etc)... Although this formula is not always true...

PS If anyone wants to enquire price of BS41 can contact Avenue sound... They have received a fresh stock of BS41 & FS 51s...

PSS Guys as I have requested before could someone make a list with all the equipment reviewed with their approx pricing... I am interested in the proac tower's pricing(or maybe even the 5.1 system's price) & would also like to know the approx area of the demo room for comparative reference...

prem,
We are in the process of building the F5, and dreaming how good the B1 + a pure class A amp designed by the audio legend, would sound together.

Hi friends,

Let me thank to Sonosphere,Denom & very kind Viki who made Pune meet a great success. It was well organised & well arranged. We could listened to almost all possible combinations from Minifi(Sony speakers) to real hifi setups. Also thanks to other HFV members who did setups combos really fast.

Now coming to main outcomes I can set 3 categories.Budget hifi, Midrange hifi & Highend stereo setups.

Budget hifi-
As others said it was CA-S30 + CA AM-5 (25W)amp.Source was Beresford Caiman connected to Laptop.

This combo was a great finding for money.I personally did not expect such a wonderful sound from a budget set up. Midrange was very clean,no sign of straining or struggle.Voices were very natural.Treble was present very much with a quality.Bass surprised many one for the size of the speaker. It was not very big but amount was more than what one can get from similar sized speakers.Yes for loud volume, cone started distorting due to extended movement, but not loosing overall sound effect.May times speaker distort with change in sound signature, which did not happen. It may be due do DAC was outputting deep bass.Overall sound is warm, with good voice tones & treble not that much rolled off as many says.

The second option which handled this Bass effectively was Pioneer BS with Cambridge amp.Bass was much more & deeper for bookshelf standards.Overall very good frequency response.A big & bold sound stage with nice midrange.

Midrange hifi -

No doubt its Omishra's Pass B1 (preamp without gain) + Norge Power amp + Focal 706V sourced by Asus DAC from Laptop.Oh God hats off to Omishra's sincere efforts to make sound better.
The sound was a real joy.Bass with total control,no Boominess. Not less or not more. Soundstage, very wide with good separation.Vocals very lively with good imaging.Treble a lot detailed, but fatigue free.A true Hifi setup. Norge power amp was driving Focals with ease.We had to stop listening only to continue testing different combinations.Again Pass B1 was the main key as we also tried Focal with other combos & sound was average. So you can easily make out the best link.;)

Highend stereo setups-

Will it be other than Electrocompaniet AW120 + Proac 140.Awesome combo.Lot of power with fine control. The Hall was full with wide & bigger sound. Its a true audiophile set up.Short of nothing to me in all the combos used in the meet.Great experience.

Now some components did not complete the expectations.
Emotiva pre & mini power amp.Well pre had good soundstage, but not natural to me.min power amp was driving speakers well, but a bit dry over all sound.
AP system was not bad,but most of us preferred Pass B1 + Norge power amp (another Indian efforts).

In DACs Audio-GD was winner to me.We compared Vikis' Marants CDp(7 series)doing A/B,very few one could make out differences.Rest were not bad,but we felt Audio-GD was better.

Now something about Krypton Audio, yes Hari is making good efforts to make TL speakers sound better. They sounded again bigger & did not strained with a particular frequency.I preferred Kevlar cone speaker with fast Bass response. Some more tweaks will get us a good total Indian combo with pass B1 & Norge power amp. Denom confirmed that original CO tweak sounds better than this one.

We also had chance to compare Onkyo & Marantz pre power connected to ProAC set up with Energy centre. Sources Toshiba BDX3200 & Panasonic BDp. Onkyo as usual has a lot of power with good drive.ProAC sounded good with music too.But star performer was Marantz Pre+power. What a sound.A true hifi HT sound.Surround also sounded Dynamic & Big.Each channel had enough power & Dialogues were smooth with enough strength.I could here every detail in the scene. Suround strearing was effortless. You can feel an object moving around you.with low volume & SW off it did not loose anything. It sounded a bith warmer but for m Home true audiophile HT.:clapping:

Also not to forget about the food. Thanks to FM who arranged it.
Finally thanks to askii2 who started this thread.
:signthankspin:

Wow. What a day :)

It was yet another amazing meet at Pune. As always special thanks to our wonderful host Viki (you the man :clapping:).

Never spent so much time on music. It was a record break of demoing more than 25 combinations of gear.

Thanks to Denom and Sonos for organizing the event and thanks to Hemant& Hari for the conveyance and Shams for the express speed drop at my home - next to the lift :)

Thanks to all wonderful Pune guys who made the event all the more interesting especially those who gave company to us past midnight. :yahoo: You guys carried lot of stuff which kept us busy the entire day.

Thanks to the SLR guys... I envy you because you had double treat. :p

Thanks to Mumbai guys for not allowing me to sleep even for a couple of hours :D :D Not even in the car.

I had so much fun in connecting various gears and doing A/B wherever needed/ possible. Waving hands and sometimes getting confused myself as to which one was playing - don't worry guys, I DID switch (correctly) when I waved :):ohyeah:

Apart from music, enjoyed other nice moments- having chilled beer at noon, spicy biriyani, storming the mini bar once the climax was nearing and watching movies on a high end setup while lying on bed. :ohyeah::licklips:

Meet you guys in the HFV Pune Meet 4

Hi Spirovious

Pass B1 is not an Indian product. Its a buffer preamp DIY design by Nelson Pass. You can also buy one assembled from First Watt. It costs $995.

:D

Ya.. the left right thing was pretty hilarious especially when one listener thought left means left speaker and right means right speaker on! :D :D :D

Best was Audio GD DAC/marantz left-right-left-right... :)

:D Necessity is the mother of all inventions... :)

Next time we will make use of the big plasma TV to indicate which one is playing. I will have keyboard on the left hand with my right hand on the switches!

Wow - what a meet !

To me, it gets better each time. In this 3rd edition, I felt that things were much better organized - everyone was on time (including Sono:) ), we managed 25 demos in record time, it all went pretty smooth. The credit for that surely goes to Denom & The Main Man, Sono. Thanks also to Sarang, Rohit & others who did the gear swaps etc., and Cyclops & others for the pix. A shout out our man Atharva, who livened up the party with a couple cases of Beer :clapping: Nice Gesture, dude. A special thanks to Sono for managing the food so well.

On to the Gear - lots of surprises: the S30, the Pioneer, Omishra's awesome Pass B1, the Norge Power (a hidden gem), some nice DAC's (though I am not a DAC guy), and finally the Energy Centers (yes, we did an HT shooot-out too).
Another surprise: Cyclops, and old friend from 15 years ago ! And another - a chupa Rustom from Pune, who is now a friend, and owns a massive collection of LP's, Turntables, cd's and other stuff, and will be on HFV soon.

Residuals:
Mr. Z - your long HDMI cable is here.
Sono - you left the UPS here, and I think we all owe you for Dinner ! Let us know how to resolve that.
Mubeen - your power strip is safe with me, but cannot be returned without another session with the EC's - which are reserved if you ever decide to sell :)

The best part: just hanging out with what I can now say are old friends, chugging a few, listening to great music for a whole day (& part of the night).
Denom, Santy, Hemant, Spiro, Darshan, Shams and Hari - thanks for making the effort to come from Mumbai. Flash, Sarang, Loks, Sono, Sachin, Mubeen, Sagar, always a pleasure. New friends - Darshan, Spiro, Z, Omishra - enjoyed meeting you guys.

Finally, looking ahead: let me inform all of you now; we have a better venue for HFV 2013 - an independent bungalow, with lots more space, no time limits for loud music, space for lots of gear, and a beautiful garden where we can serve meals. Askii - looking to you to light the flame again :)

Viki

putting efforts of uploading the first round of pics, deadly ones @ that taken lovingly by FM's Cyclops1234 & Mr.Zed
The highlights of the meet for me were:
1. Putting faces to hifivision "handles"
With names not accompanying the pics, we are unable to attribute forum handles to the faces.
The APs were sounding very uncharacteristic of their nature and how I am used to hearing them, don't know why. Makes me feel good that they work well in my existing system :)
Major let downs - My personal unbiased Opinion
1. Acoustic Portrait Pre + Power (I have no idea what the hullabaloo is all about)
For their SQ, Acoustic Portrait amps are fantastic at their price point. Their only limitations are modest power and the resultant limited dynamics if not paired with right speakers. Thus room size would also matter on how they sound.
You are spot on. I miss my APs.

The AP preamp has amazing holographic imaging.
AP system was not bad,but most of us preferred Pass B1 + Norge power amp
The APs need to be partnered with suitable speakers and need the right environment to sound good.

As for the Pass B1, it is an amazing clean and transparent sounding system. I had paired it with the AP Power amp and the combo sounded amazing. I wish you guys did an A-B of AP Power and Norge Power paired with the B1. I'm sure it would have raised a few eyebrows if not more.
