Hi All,

I am new to this forum and this is my first post.

Fortunately somehow, I stumbled upon this forum while searching the solution for my problem which I have not got till date. So may be all you tech wizards in this forum can help me out.

I have 7 year old Sony GNZ 9D hifi System wihich has built in DVD Player & Cassette Player. I am really happy with the sound quality of the product. I have enjoyed re writable dvds on the system without any problem. But over a period of time things have changed. Now cassettes and DVD are passe. Now is the time for watching downloaded content directly like mkv & mp4.

Now I have got a new Sony 32"HDTV for myself which has got 4 HDMI ports & one optical out which you call tospink I suppose. (I am sorry as I am totally naive in this area)

Now the problem is I don't have time to convert the mkv & mp4 files to first DVD files then burn them on the disc and watch it on the TV through my hifi system. Also this way I am missing on the picture quality as I don't get HD/full HD picture quality through re writable DVDs and also while converting to the DVD files, the picture quality also gets deteriorated. I am planning for a HD media player for this problem which will take care of picture quality.

Now coming to the sound. As I really want to have 5.1 sound from my media player which will be connected to the TV & TV in turn to my hifi system. But problem is that my hifi system neither has hdmi input/output not it has coaxial/optical input for me to enjoy the 5.1 surround sound. Also it does not have in SPDIF input. it simply has s-video and red and white coloured inputs. That's it.

I request you is there any way I can enjoy 5.1 surround sound in the above setup. How can I get optical/coaxial/digital input for my hifi system?how can I get hdmi input/output for my system. Is there any converter available in the market which does this job.

I could have gone for new HTIB but currently I don't have the budget and nor I want to part with my system as of now as the sound quality of the product is superb.

Please help me out in getting the solution. I am sorry if it's stupid question for some as I might sound like one but can't help.

Can you tell us what output options does your media player have...?? and can the Sound input for the hifi System be selected manually to be either a TosLink or coaxial ??

No valid questions are stupid. Its the answers which sometimes are :)

Since you mentioned that your hi-fi does not accept digital input and only accepts analog red and white cables, there is no way you can provide 5.1 input to your hifi to decode. The best that can happen is the sony can distribute the stereo signal into the five speakers, something like stereo surround (oxymoron, I know :P) which some AVRs have. In that case, you can get any good media player from asus, ac ryan which has analog out and connect it to your sony to get the audio from all channels. But that WONT be true surround. For getting true surround from anything other than DVDs played by your Hi-fi, you will need to change to something which can accept either hdmi or optical and can decode dolby digital/dts signals a minimum.

Hope my answer helped and you wont classify it as stupid :)

Simply speaking there is no way to enjoy real 5.1 channel using your Sony HT as it has no optical or coaxial input. But you will get prologic or pseudo 5.1 using the stereo (line) inputs. Most media players have a line out. If your TV has no line out then you can buy an optical to RCA converter (dac). FiiO has such a dac and the price is around 1K.

About superb sound of Sony, I suggest you to audition some other models from Yamaha, Onkyo or Denon. You will change your perception.

The easiest and cost effective way to get surround from your system is to use the speakers of Sony with an Budget (second-hand) AVR from Yamaha/ Denon/Onkyo and then buy a media player with HDMI in-out. Search locally for an Used AVR...... may be 12--13k you can get hold of one and buy Asus O Play Media player.

2nd option> sell that Sony for 10k and get a Onkyo HTS 3400.

I second this point. In the scenario of DTS HD MA and Dolby True HD receivers all the previous generation (just 3 to 4 years old and sparingly used) DTS and Dolby Digital receivers price has dropped like dead rocket. Even at 10 K you can get descent receivers. It would be wise to go in for such receivers with your existing speakers and the same can be upgraded with better speaker package and sub later if need be.

This arrangement is better than HTIB as improvement is always possible with wide connectivity possible.

with regard to second option I am of great thinking that will his existing system be able to fetch him 10 K?.

I need urgent help.yesterday I got wharfedale 10.5 towers 10cs 10 dfs. And one pair 9 dfs. And denon 2113 through a local audio visual consultant.as there was one pair of 9 dfs and the package seemed old with multiple cellotape I got suspicious.so far not opened.some of them seem to be repacked.I have net unpacked them.Wednesday when he comes for installation it will be unpacked.I would like to know how to know these are new ones or refurbished.does package box contain any warranty or other documents

Usually there will be import date on the package. If you are in doubt, inspect the speakers carefully. See if there is any dust or fingerprints.

Dear FMs,

I am so thankful to those who have replied to my query.

Sound output from hifi can not be selected manually, it just gives dolby/dts output for DVDs. Any other sound input is taken as stereo wherein it can be selected as 2 ch stereo or link. In Link mode it gives output to 2 fronts and 2 rears and not to centre.

This option seems to be a good option. I recently gone through olx websites and found out that people are selling the same GNZ9D hifi for 7-8K. But I really doubt who'll purchase it in the time of HD sound decoders and HDMI/Optical/coaxial inputs.

Also if I can get the AVR at 10-12K then I can use my current speakers with it. Only thing is that my Sub is passive, so perhaps I'll have to go for new sub as well. Any idea where can I get used AVR for 10-12K? is there any option I can get new AVR @15K?

if yes which company?model name? Also which company is good among Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha. I heard the name of Yamaha but not the first two. So what about their quality? I heard the names of these HTIBs like Panasonic, LG, Sony, Samsung like everyone else. So what is the difference between these brands and the brands which I have not heard before?

Hope my answer helped and you wont classify it as stupid

Absolutely not dear as I clearly understand that the answer is for my help only. Until and unless it is very rude using indifferent tone.

So once again I request your replies on my questions. Thanks in advance.

I request you to clear out one more confusion. Now I did little bit of my own research and thought that why not directly go for Blu-Ray Player and connect it to my 5.1 speakers rather than going for AVR. So I have selected the following models

1.Sony BDP-S490 MRP-14K
BDP-S490 : Blu-ray Disc

I need one more suggestion.

Since now I know there's no way that I can get 5.1 sound from my HT with lack of optical/coaxial input, I have decided to purchase 5.1 sound decoder as below.

Digital Dolby DTS AC3 Optical to 5.1 Analog Audio Gear Sound Decoder SPDIF RCA | eBay

Now please guide me with a media player (AC Ryan Playon HD), Sony Speaker Set of 5.1 will I be able to connect this sound decoder to my speakers.

It has connections for all 5.1 speakers including spdif/optical. I'll connect my media player to this decoder thru spdif/optical and TV to Media player through HDMI.

I find this is the most cost effective way for my HT.

I need your inputs for the same.
