Ilaiyaraaja

for folks who want to experience raaja I suggest you pick any of his movie and watch it since all his songs are composed to go with the movie situation ..many will find his background score more accessible and then you can ease into the songs..imho raaja genius can be better appreciated in his background scores..
let me tell you it is an experience listening to his scores!

go through this blog post which details about his title scores and it would give a sneak peek to a genius called raaja

Hi,

Stop Comparing me with my Guru- A.R. Rahman | Kollywood Today

Great men react only like this to needless comparisons.I felt so proud when he didn't forget his roots and said 'Ella Pugazhum Iraivanukke' on the world stage.
When we should be feeling immensely proud to have such great artistes like MSV, Raja and ARR it is ridiculous to see guys abusing each other in so many web sites(not HFV) taking sides. We may have our favourites but we can't dismiss other greats as worthless.

cheers,
sri

Well said Sri, let's enjoy the music that we like from both the artistes. For that matter even Harris has given some good nos which can be called classics.

15 Days to PAA releasing December 4th 2009

The great Ilaiyaraja, pristine in white and just off from Balaji at Tirupati, conducts me at Prasad Studios for the song from PAA. I did it once when he was not around. I did it today when he was around. The world seemed different. The quality improved. The reason for his hand gestures as he conducted the rhythms poetic and his demeanor and expressions synonymous with the flow of the notes he had composed in his private room just behind and beyond the studio.

His eyes wild and bright. His language measured and pointed. His reason behind every note definite and pure and his decision final on the output. The master, the maestro, the magician the little Raja.

I am struck with emotion. It works its way up the belly through to the chest and heart and waits to explode into the eye lids. And I return back to the Hotel and I believe that I will wait till the morrow for the senses to dissolve before I can go any further

Good night, my dears ..

I shall return before the morrow is over ..

Aye Sir! Present Sir!

To be honest, I have not listened to Pazhassi Raja soundtrack a lot,I have watched the movie( Great movie) and listened to the album a few times, but my initial impressions are:

I am not entirely happy with the music of the movie but I think that has got to do mainly with the fact that the songs in such a movie are limited but the theme of the movie. In that light, the soundtrack is good.
There are 6 songs:
My favourites are"
Aadhiushassin - K.J Yesudas, this one embodies the struggle for freedom, honor, patriotism that the movie is about.

Ambum Kombum- the Maestro himself lends his voice to this song. I love this song:p, this type of song doesnt come along often, I mean it's supposed to be sung by the tribals who help Pazhassi Raja Kerala Varma in his fight against the British in the movie.

Kunnathe Konnaykum by K.S Chitra, is a very melodious and romantic number. It is the one that seems have become the favorite here. It is sung by Pazhassi Raja's wife who's waiting for his arrival in the movie.:D

Olathandil and Aalamadankala Mythavanalle sound quite, well, familiar.

EDIT: I am not happy with BG score:sad:! For most of the movie, the BG seems to be identical to that in English/Hollywood war movies( sure Pazhassi is fighting the British, but its about Pazhassi and not the British army)!
I mean its not like we dont have our wind and percussion instruments! Its only in the second half that there are pieces which are more in line with the music of the region.

Hi Titus
I would request you to listen to the Music of Pazhassi Raja Once again  and if it heard in a good system ( You definitely need a tower speakers to appreciate the low bass) the songs are spectacular. Illayaraja has added many small instrumentation in the middle of the songs which I think cant be heard with any other Musicians. The Last song in the CD Aalammadamkala --In this song he uses various type of drums and this is quite a treat to hear in my New Quad22l2 speakers. In the song No.5 Odathandil there are many small sounds from birds and this mixes with the music very well and pleasant to hear , Not to say about the songs Kunnathae ( Chitra has done it again) and Aadhiyushassandhya ( which is a super hit song in this film) and Ambum kombum ( The Voice of Manjari and Illayaraja mixes very well) . I have not seen the film so cant comment about the BG. But the Music in this film is the best i have heard in recent times and a sure collections for every music lovers.

Regards

I dont mean any offense to anybody. But somehow I dont feel that posting Youtube videos of Ilayaraja songs may be the best idea for this thread. Reason being that in a lot of the cases, the beauty of the visuals and the acting involved may not match up to the class of the music.

I agree with you "thevortex". We can simply list the best songs with the film names. There are number of sites available to listen or download the songs.

Great Idea!

The one's I cherish most are below (Not limited)

2. Vizhiyile undhan Vizhiyile - Don't know the film name (Was Jothayli -

Hi,

The above mentioned song was composed for the Tamil movie "Nooravadhu Naal" sung by SPB and S. Janaki. Also the song starts as "Viziyile un vizhiyil moha..."

Hai All,

I am starting this thread as per the request of Forum members Sri and Vortex. I want all to participate actively and give their contribution. To begin with I am posting the Link to the wikipedia about Ilaiyaraaja(IR) ;

Ilaiyaraaja - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In this thread I will post details of rare songs of the maestro with some news, pl post your impressions and views.

Thanks,

N.Murali.

Hi Murali,

Thanks a lot for starting this thread. I am an ardent fan of Ilayaraja. Recently I happened to visit the following blogs about IR and they are interesting.

This blog (in Tamil) analyzes IR's expertise in scoring music compositions and the background music in films. It also discusses the specialities of AR Rahman and why these two legends cannot be compared. Interesting one.

??ி??்: ??ை??ா?ா - ? ??் ??்?ா?், ??்?்???்? ?ி?ா??்??ு?் ?ி?் ??&#3

This blog analyzes IR's innovations in rhythm patterns in Tamil film songs. Raja sir used only chorus voice as rhythm for the song "Naan Poranthu Vandhadhu" from Maya Bazaar (1995). An interesting read.
