Nice list of songs listed so far, Started my morning with the song from Naan Padum Padal - Devan Kovil Deepam Ondru sung by S.Janaki. Excellent violin and nice voice.

However people use to call these as Mohan Hits (The actor in this movie and several other movies) rather than the Gem who created all these.

Raja is a genius. he is amazing. his compositions are mind blowing. i love the way he uses the bass guitar, infact i cant think of any other composer who has exploited this instrument is such varied ways. The way he fuses western and carnatic super. watch for the counterpoint in S Janaki's voice in Vikram Vikram son which arguably is the first Rap song in Tamil films.

And the Shenai in 'Aathadi paavada kathada'. Man, how the guitar and the shenai play a beautiful beck and call melody while the flute finishes the duel between then in the first BGM is simply out of the world. no one else can do it but Raja.

Thanks Flanker. Nice details. What are your other favourites of the Maestro; I am preparing the second list to be posted.

who can mix human voice..the subtle humming and little nuances in them with music and come up with great compositions other than the maestro...a few that come immediately to my mind are
1.the intro in 'intha minminikku' (tic tic MOVIE)- just out of the world- class
2.metti oli kaatrodu
3.aagaya gangai ( my all time favorite!!)
...and there are soooo many more.

Hmm.. I know I promised long back to send in my favourite songs of Ilayaraja. But as always its taking long. But just to mention a couple of songs :

- Neethane Enthan Pon Vasantham sung by the evergreen SPB. This song has some mesmerizingly soft crooning by SPB accompanied by some tuneful guitar thrumming. A song which is good to listen no matter what time of day or night.

- Ninnukori Varnam featuring the gifted Chitra's voice. I think this song is one of the busiest ones that Ilayaraja may have composed in terms of the number of things going on behind the singers' voice. Complex composition requiring a detailed, yet laidback system to enjoy fully.

Sometime soon I hope to detail out some of my other favourites. It is going to be hard to try and not mention the favourites that others have already sent in, but lets see how it goes.

Song 9 : A catchy number. In this song Raja uses the Violin and Flute in a Western style. This song original is in Kannada. This tune has also been used recently in the film SARVAM.

This thread has been forgotten for some time. So here are three songs of Raja to revive it.

1.Pachamalai poovu-Kizhakku Vaasal.

This song is meant to be a lullaby in the movie.Enhanced by the beautiful lyrics by the director of the movie himself, R V Udayakumar. Raja uses the flute to great effect and SPBs soothing voice lifts the song to a higher level.

If the above gem is a melody, here are two song riots by Raja.Hear the songs listed below with the sound a little cranked up.

2.Rum Bum Bum-Micheal Madana Kamarajan.

Watch SPB go in this song.Trumpet plays an important role to make this a great party dance number.

3.Pottu Vaitha Kadal-Singara Velan.

This is sung by Kamal himself, at a top pitch.Awesome guitar by Raja.

Guys, Can you please suggest a shop where we can get good collection of Ilayaraja's Songs? I have tried in Landmark and odyssey. All they have are a handful of cds with 3-4 good tracks.
