Ilaiyaraaja

'Janani Janani' really was a complex song. Many professional singers may not have been able to do justice to that. Very versatile man, Ilayaraja.

In my opinion, far and away, the best singer among all music directors in India :).

Dear friends

Few years back i got a bundle of records from a guy who wanted to dispose his few collections. In that collection there were few records of muslim interest devotional songs. interestingly one record label(angel) had the music directors name as pavalar brothers. The recording first published in 1973. I was taken by surprise and since then that record has been a treasure for me.

It was the time i suppose Ilayaraja along with his brother were composing communist party songs.I do not know how many like those tracks are lying unknown. But when you hear the songs it clearly shows the style of Ilayaraaja which he performed in the years to come.

No wonder how much ever music directors may come in this digital era, a real test comes when one has to do a full fledged orchestration it is here Ilayaraaja takes his score as the best. Those days R.D Burman was considered the best director in orchestration and now Ilayaraaja a living legend.

Regards
Srinivas

Hai all,

I have also heard that Ilaiyaraaja has composed a collection of Tamil Folk songs for Dancer Padmasubramaniam's Dance drama and later the same was released as a LP.

Hai all,

Ilaiyaraaja has been awarded National Award for the Best Music Director for "Best background score " for the film Pazhassi Raja.

Resulpookutty has bagged the award for Best Audiography for the same film.

Congrats to both.

Thanks for this great thread. I saw this thread only today. I have a 2000+ collection of Ilayaraja songs. I like his melodies (a number of them with Yesudas and S Janaki) and a few fast numbers. But these days he is not producing any good music at all when compared to his golden 80's and 90's (you can disagree). But some times there comes a few gems like Kannai Padithen, Malar Villile (movie: Ponnar Shankar).

Happy Birthday to the maestro !! many a happy moments relished with his melodies...happy to live in his times.

Seeing this thread only now!!! There must be millions of threads around numerous forums on IR....Still nothing can justifiable praise his talents...

Nandu also had some rare ones...."Kaise Kahoon" sung by Bhupender (who is a legend in himself) and Janaki....

Auto Raja (see how low rated films get good songs) - had Sangathil paadadha kavidhai... Another example is "Sokkanukku Vaacha" from Kaval Geetham.

I am still wondering how I missed this thread.

Hope you got to listen the part where he shared a few verses from his ongoing literary work - a Devaaram on Ramanar.

But the best part was when he sang the song "Chinnan Chiru vayadhil"(Meendum Kokilaa) using the phrase "Chinan Chiru Kiliyae Kannammaa Selva Kazhanjiyamae.." only , all through the song!

RAAJA RAAJA DHAAN !
