Raja Paarvai's score and the theme music are simply brilliant.
I have seen BGM in LPs. Johnny has a nice BGM in LP.
Rajapaarvai film CD has the song "Modern Concerto" the fusion piece from the film. The Film starts with a recording session shot in a studio wherein the troupe plays a BGM for a film in the background, a brilliant instrumental piece with whistle and mridangam (none other than the genius TV Gopalakrishnan) and of course the trade mark Bass guitar notes from IR. Later the same piece was used as BGM for the film Guru, a Kamal starrer.
Johny LP has a instrumental piece "Chasing Music" in it from its BGM.
His BGM for the film "Tik Tik Tik" was way ahead of its times.
Similarly the BGM of the film " Kadhal Oviyam " was used in the song "Pothi vacha malligai" for the film Mann Vasanai.
Another BGM for the film Moondram Pirai became the hit song "Thumbi vaa" for the film "Olangal" by the same director Balu Mahendra. Incidentally this tune was rejected by Director Bhagyaraj for his film "Thooral Ninnu pochu", inspite of his Asst Director Pandiarajan's liking for the tune.
The instrumental piece "Don't compare" - a brilliant solo performance by VS Narasimhan on the Violin, first featured on a Ramarajan Film LP, and was later added in the "How to Name it?" CD Version , the LP version of the album does not include this piece.
Punnagai mannan film LP had two instrumental pieces which were part of the film.
In the film Aan paavam watch out for the scene Pandian goes to the village to see Seetha, the would be bride, the BGM comes in 3 pieces, a Violin+Veena+Keyboard composition, and later the same piece is played in a pathos mood. Its a touch of Genius period.
In the film Saagara Sangamam (Salangai Oli in Tamil where Jayapradha goes about enquiring about Kamalhassan), she sits in the hotel room in her chair rocking it, here IR's BGM in Violin+Piano+Mridangam is a touch of class, no doubt this film fetched him a national award.
"Manadhil yenna ninaivugalo" song from another Tamil Film became "Composers Breath" in the album "Nothing but wind".
"Pitchai paathiram" & "Kamakshi karuna Vilasini" two devotional songs were adapted in the films "Naan Kadavul " & "Aathma" respectively.
In the film Agni Natchatiram , Raja has used the song "Part Time lover" by Stevie wonder in a desi style using Tabla and Flute.
Some songs which were used directly in the background are "I feel Love" by Donna Summer in the film "Sigappu Rojakkal" (in the scene where actor Kamalhassan murders the Hotel Steward in a toilet) and "Save all your Kisses for me " from Brother hood of man in the film Ilamai Oonjaladukirathu.
If we happen to see an Ilaiyaraja film, we have to keep ours ears more watchful than our eyes, for we may unearth a musical gem from it. Many of his title sores are also very good eg. film"Kaali".
In a recent Televison interview to a Telugu channel, when quizzed why he was not recording all his old songs in new Digital format so they can be made accessible to a very wider and new generation of listeners, he calmly replied that why do you want to a have a photograph of a sunrise years ago, while you can get it afresh in all its glory the very next morning.
Will add some more later as I recollect. :licklips:
