Ilaiyaraaja

I am a huge fan of Raaja and have been collecting his recordings for over 3 decades now. One of my biggest disappointments with him is how he more or less faded away with the advent of ARR and other younger music directors instead of reviving his compositional skills that had become jaded by then. MSV, who was the only game in town until Raaja arrived, went through a similar decline when he faced competition from younger MDs. Since both of them enjoyed long periods of almost total domination of the tamil film music industry, I was wondering if their sudden decline was attributable to burn-out or diminished creativity brought on by age. Any thoughts?

Raja has his own style. His style was quite a revelation when he came into the field. He ruled the industry longer than anyone. Rahman was similarly quite refreshing when he came into the field. Listen to the music in the beginning of Pudhu Vellai mazhai song from Roja. you will understand what i mean. The problem i felt with Raja is...he produced great songs with good directors. With bad directors, or the one with just masala motives, Raja's music was not quite noteworthy. Raja over the years became quite selective on his workload. He still has his own niche market with no competitors. He still holds on to his own style.

Hi Murali,
Would you be able to recommend any specific CDs of Isaignani Raja that are well recorded? I have a few collections but the recording is pretty average, I'd like to buy some CDs with good recording/ production - could you recommend any and maybe where I can buy them as well please?
Thank you in advance.

Thank you Matbuvi :)

I have a lot of Ilaiyaraja's music on MP3 format and they are fine for background listening but when I try to do serious listening, the Ilaiyaraja CDs don't seem well produced or mastered. Will try to buy some of the available CDs on flipkart, thank you for your help.

Sony Gets Neethane En Ponvasantham

Sony Music has acquired the audio rights of Neethane En Ponvasantham (NEP) for a whopping sum. The audio label had also acquired Gauthams VTV, but we hear that they had paid more to acquire NEP. Its no surprise there, for all are waiting to hear Maestro Ilayarajas magic.

An audio teaser was also released on the birthday of Ilayaraja. Gautham has also been bragging about the musician since he started working with him. We also hear that the audio launch of the film might happen on the first week of July.

Agi music has released 3 Mp3 cd's titled as "Endrendrum Raaja" - Vol 1,2and 3 . Saw it on Flipkart .

They were supposed to release audio Cd's like those good old Oriental ones - 2 to 3 movies in one cd. Dont know if that will happen . Website shows some very good titles which are available only online

Friends.

I am collecting non-film LP albums by Maestro Illayaraja. So far I could manage to collect the following

1. Folk Music of Tamil Nadu - A 1973 LP , composed by Raja of Pavalar Bros. (much before he was named Illayaraja)
2. Illaiya Rajavin Geethanjali - 1981
3. IllayaRaajavin Geetha Vazhipaadu- 1983
4. Shri Meenakshi Sthothram - 1984
5. How to Name it -1985

I am searching for following Albums in LP
1) a Muslim devotional album by Raja released in early 70s
2) Mandolin Srinivas playing Shri. Raja's composition.

Also, any idea if "Nothing but wind" was released in a LP?

Hi Anil,

I have the Mandolin Srinivas album on Tape (and later converted to CD), I don't think it has been released in LP format . Its also the same for "Nothing but wind".

I have a visit due to your place.

Hi cooldude,

I think you have been very liberal with that adjective. :D

Cooldude,

Sorry to say this: I never liked the quality of Oriental CDs. Actually, the Oriental CDs helped me to not hear old IR songs any more in CDs :)

Dear IR fans,
If you have not listened yet, please listen to the songs and BGM (you have to watch the movie) of Malayalam Movie "Guru" [Mohanlal, SureshGopi etc].
The compositions will surely lift you to Trance state.

Also, this movie has a credit that, IR took more number of days to complete the Background score , than any other film. He used the Budapest Orchestra throughout the whole movie. BGM comes in two different styles based on the story of the movie.
