Hello all,

With Sony's KDL-55W950A the year 2013 model getting discountinued in Mar 14 and new models which were launched at the CES due to be launched in India by end of this month, is it a good time to buy the year 2013 model ?. Price has dropped to 149500/- and that's an added incentive. will new model offer anthing significant in terms of technology to wait.

I think the really technology upgrade from the W95 models would be the 4K models but they come at 260000 and prices should come down further in next 2/3 years...

But as on today is KDL-55W950A a good buy ?

thanks

It depends on your budget and urgency in buying. If you are happy to wait and willing to shell out the extra penny the 2014 series can be tried otherwise go blindly with 2013 series. IMO nothing significant has happened during last one year. Only some codec support has been added.

Thanks Swarna,

Codec support which has been added is not important for me as i have iMac in the same room where the TV is going to be installed and really did not want any smart tv or connectivity options but sadly all LED TV's in size more than 42 inch come bundled with all the modcons...

Future should be TV's which focus on clarity and resolution... dont want 3d and smart options..

Also, the price is discounted now as compared to the time it was launched and wanted to buy during the weekend and get it installed...

I think this is the best time to buy W950. The 55 incher is being offered under 1.5 lacs. Which means you have saved almost 80K then someone who has bought recently before the price drop. This is a great LED TV one can own.

The people on avforums are far from impressed with Sony's 900B series models. I've read a few reviews too and they sound disappointed. It is cheaper but it uses an IPS panel (which means less deeper black). I would strongly recommend that you get the W950A rather than waiting for the 2014 models.

Thanks for this info.. very useful...Sometimes, there are classics which you should not temper with but rather improve.... But the question is are the big guys after LCD, LED then 3D LED (rather failed) ready to sell you new concept 4K LED and hence no interest in the W950A models....

Thanks again to all the folks for your inputs

4K LEDs is a concept and is far away from reality. There is hardly any content available and unlikely to be made available soon. Without content and mass acceptance it is far from a technology worth paying for and owning. It may be an option 4-5 years down the line, but definitely not now. These TV companies are trying to sell the 4K TVs at a really high price so that it can justify their research work and also they need people to aware of the new tech, and the best way is to make it available to Janta, which is the best way to push a new technology. But as always a new tech costs you, whether you use it or not, or need it or not.

Could not agree with you more....

In 1995 they told me I needed nothing less than a Trinitron, in 2000 it was the Wega Trinitron, in 2005 you needed the HD TV, in 2010 you needed led, in 2012 you needed 3d led and in 2014 you need 4k.

Well at least they told me so.

4k is not worth.. when indian 4k channels will come ????? 2020

hardly we have 20 hd channeles with 5.1 and hardly 10% of indian population use hd channels

All Sony stores are quoting a price of Rs.1,59,990 but it's not hard to convince them to get it down to ~1.5 lakhs. I bought one recently for 1,51,000 + Free HD Tata Sky Connection.

They will tell everything but its upto you to believe it or not, in fact they get paid to sell..

I brought an HD TV last year June, i am waiting early for more HD channels. Leading DTH providers offer hardly 25 HD Channels.

So clearly HD content in India is very limited, broadcasters are not so interested in HD for now.. it may take another 2 years for see more HD channels.

Having said that now imagine UHD channels.. dude forget about it. Wait for min 5 Years to see at least 10 UHD Channels till then UHD TV's will have more better PQ at affordable price, so there is no point in taking UHD TV. IMO its waste of money.
