Its raining vintage TTs

A quick update - I replaced the Lenco idler wheel sping with a rubber band (hair band) and noticed immediate improvementer in the PRAT and background also seems to have become darker.
I feel this is a quick and easy tweak which Lenco owners can try, and revert otherwise.

I have been using rubber band ever since I discovered that the idler spring didn't have sufficient pull. One symptom was the TT refusing to start sometimes. It needed a push start. No more such problem after changing to rubber band. But one has to inspect every few months and replace as rubber degrades.

PS: has anyone actually opened up and serviced their Lenco motor? I haven't done it yet.

Yes Joshua, I am planning to do the TJN mod, I started with this as a first step. I have ensured that the tension is just enough to pull the wheel to the shaft at 33.5 rpm, If it is more it impacts the sound negatively.
Servicing the motor is the next pending task.

I have done it twice for 2 Lencos, it takes 2 hrs with slowest speed and at most care.

Here you go..

I removed motor and bearing before starting work. See the 40 year old grease into it.

Look at my tools to remove C-clip from motor as well as bearing.

Cleaned all parts bushing etc. Please pay attention to tension screw (in yellow circle) which is half hollow and spring loaded with cylindrical insert. (red circle)
Tension adjustment after fitting is like this - tight the screw fully but loosely. Then unwind half-or one turn. You are done.

Parts near to yellow circle are at front of armature and parts near the rectangular pressure plate are towards end of armature.( behind wire connections)

Main bearing cleaned with IPO and wiped.

Everything in place.

My two plinths -

Top view of plinth. multiple coats of primer and oil paint color at inside and bottom side. Polished all other sides everywhere. Smooth enough to retain natural finish.

True Sachin! They are very heavy >12Kg each and photos with camera flash don't justify. I need to take better picture in natural light.

Om,
Very elaborate pictures. A Lenco motor will sound much smoother if serviced and the secret of Lenco's success in my opinion is the motor's silence. It's a cool operator.

Thank you Sir,
Yes motor is extremely silent. In fact I was trying to hear motor noise in silent tracks with full volume. Surface noise was audible along with faint 50Hz mains pickup by phono wires. Nothing below 90% volume.

And how much lithium based grease it needs? Not more than size of toothpaste filling toothbrush. :) approx size of 2 peanuts.

I was at Omji's place recently and he was meticulously working on these plinths with great care even though he was having severe back ache due to working on this project! The finished product looks cool but the amount of back breaking (literally!) work simply has to yield nothing short of something special!
Respect!
