Just bought Yamaha YHT-299

Are the speakers in the 299 bundle awesome, good or okay? The reliance digital guy told me that I should only go for it if I want to eventually change the speakers and he said that I should go for Htib around the same range.
If 299 speakers aren't good then what is the alternative?

In that price range, YHT 299 is the best. I think the store guy has misled you.
This kind of system with AVRs gives you an option of upgradability in the future.

All the sony, philiphs, LG, Samsung home theater system doesn't allow that.

Coming to your question, this is one of the most basic entry level system available @ 35K and for the price, it is awesome for movies if you haven't owned or heard any mid or high end systems

This unit is still good for movies and fair for music. The music playability is limited by the front stereo speakers.

If your room is small to medium (under 200sq. feet) then YHT-299 speaker are good. It is very good performer if room size is small and want to enjoy perfect separations in small size room (Large speakers would be overkilled). Above this room size you can update the speakers to Bookshelf/Floorstanders. But if room is small and you use big speakers then you have to control (limit) the sound of each channel because of its loudness, which doesn't make sense if you are not using speakers to its potential.

A two way or a three way book shelf or FS provides superior sound quality and musicality when compared to a Satellite speaker system. Loudness and power handling is secondary, SQ is primary. So if the system is replaced with a good stereo and centre speakers, then its going to definitely up the entire experience.

Of course, Two/Three way bookshelf/FS are superior but my suggestion was IF room is small then there is no mean to spend money on FS/BS. If space and money is not a problem then he should go for separates (AVR+Speakers (FS/BS)+Subwoofer).

Even if the room is small, the YHT 299 is not okay for Music from those punny speakers. Its okay when you compare against other speakers from Creative etc, but definitely not in the sonic league of a BS.

^^ Agree, these are not recommended if you want to use it for music. This YHT-299 is recommended only in following conditions:
1. Limited Budget for AVR+Speakers+Subwoofer (Very Important)
2. Small room
3. Space limitations for Speaker Placement
4. VFM combo (AVR+Speakers) for movies only.
5. Can be usable for the meantime, speakers upgrade later.
etc.

If you have plan to upgrade the speakers soon. Hold yourself and buy AVR, Speakers/Sub separately.

^ Yes, for Movies its Good. But still the Centre channel speakers if had a little more grunt would be nice and add more depth to the over all dialogues.

Again no one argues about the value proposition of this setup.

My room measures 12' by 16' so that makes it about 192sq feet so that's okay.
Now I'm considering to get the Avr and speakers separately and I can go as high as 50-60k. But there are a few problems. I can't get any floorstanders as my entertainment console/stand spans almost the entire length of the wall. Book shelfers would be good but availability is a concern. The RD store in Chandigarh doesn't have any separates available, so first I have to look for a shop that keeps them.

I will be going to the RD store again for demo so I can get a better understanding of the system performance.
If I do plan to get the separates, do I have to get the wires to connect the speakers to Avr separately?
Any advise on the bookshelf speakers to go for?

That does look pretty small. The build quality doesn't look very promising.

299 retails for 35 K and 2910 for 38-39k. The AVRs in those HITB Ie HTR 3066/3067 if bought separately cost 25 to 28k , which Is equivalent to 377/375( if bought cost 30 k plus) receiver I guess.

You can either get HTR 3066/3067 for 25 K and get a pair of Nice BS or FS for 20 K and later build your Centre Channel, Presence speakers and Sub.

Anotherway to think, the 299 package has everything ready for HT, including an active sub. This package separately costs 15 K I guess. You may upgrade to a book shelf later for Music .

Frankly speaking, HTs are never good enough for music. If you are only into music then Separates is the best option. But if you want a balance between movies and music then HTs are a good option.

Considering your budget the best option would be to go for yht-299 and replace the fronts with Pioneer SP-BS22 which are a bit bulky but are vfm and proven option with the Yht-299 AVR.

how much Pioneer SP-BS22 costs.? or any suggestions u can give.??
thanks.

On All practical sense, please go with something bigger than these speakers than these. For Full time Music, this will fall short when go high in volume and these will sound very strained and will not be able to reproduce the lower range more like a bigger one with a bigger mid range driver.
But do keep in mind that yht-299 is bundled with a low end avr, so the fronts you choose should should not be too powerful to be blown out by this avr if played loud even if by mistake...

They will very easily accommodate a FS if speakers is 8/6 Ohms. Need to Look some where else if the speakers planned are 4 Ohms.

Will a rxv375/377 blow out the aj bookshelves or floorstanders in question??

I presume what he means is not to drive the Amplifier in the AVR in to clipping by driving a very power hungry speakers and blowing the voice coil. But the AVR nowadays have built in protection I guess.

Current price of YHT-299 is Rs 33990/- in Reliance Digital with Rs 2000/- cash back (if we do not want Philips DVD player for additional Rs 999/-). Seems good deal.

Hi machos,
I'm also looking for YHT-299 and this deal indeed seems to be a good one. Please could you let know whether this deal is in Bangalore or Chennai Reliance Digital?
