Just bought Yamaha YHT-299

Got the culprit.

The hollow sound from the fronts and center was due to the fact that the HDMI pass through from AVR to TV had audio signals as well. This made the TV speakers work with AVR speakers and thus somehow creating a hollow/echo effect.

I did turn off audio pass through from AVR to TV since the AVR would drive my home theater speakers.

Now I have added rear speakers in the system as well since I just completed wiring for them. I will start on fine tuning the system and will update the thread accordingly.

Thats cool :), Explore and enjoy. Just try to move your subs in different positions and find a right place for your subwoofer, it will create much more difference.

Enjoy :)

I wanted a basic AVR and after some research , decided to go for Pioneer VSX-329. But then I came to know about Yamaha YHT-299. I always wanted to buy RX-V375 when I read reviews about it in whatHi-fi. Bt i was too expensive. Then i came to know that it is the same receiver in YHT-299. So I am planning for the Yamaha. But the speaker package (NS-P20) is not the best. So I am thinking twice.

The receiver used in YHT-299 is HTR 3066 which is equivalent to RX-V375. So the YHT-299 makes a lot of sense as you get a receiver with similar features to RX-V375 with additional speakers at just an extra cost of some 5 k. Assuming RX-V375 costs 30k and NS-P20 cost 15 K , the package comes to 45 K.

That`s sad to know. Any reason the repair guy gave for the speaker damage ?

I have tried up to -3, so far nothing happend. IMO i wont say the speakers are of cheap quality, its the quality they have for this price. Pretty much same logic as any other electronic equipment, take a DSLR that comes with the Kit lens, most of them find its a beautiful one and others feel its not a useful lens. But we always have options to upgrade it.

am positive that the Receiver is capable of pushing few big boys. You can upgrade the speakers to meet your quality requirements.

Attched my yht299 , apple tv 2 with tv
Tv with hdmi to receiver, then apple tv 2 with hdmi to receiver
Not getting dolby effects while playing youtube in apple tv
Plz help
Need settings

1. Does source have Dolby stream?
2. If no, try Dolby Prologic II in surround effects
3. If the source has Dolby, does your Apple TV pass through without decoding and probably down-mixing?
4. If it does NOT pass through, refer #2
5. If it does pass through, use 'Straight' mode of the AVR.

I doubt whether YT has Dolby audio though.

Agree with neoonwheels.

As far my youtube experience (currently using chromecast), no video on youtube gives 5.1.

You need content (Blu ray disk or downloaded mkv file etc) along with pass through player (blu ray player or media player) to get 5.1 effect on your yht 299.

What is the AVR model no. in this Package? Is it Yamaha RX377?

Just found it's RX375/HTR-3066. I think it's a great beginner's avr.

I typically do not play this HT at more than -15db as the noise starts to creep in beyond that.

What do you mean by as noise ? I suspect your SUB gain levels are too high . Can switch off the sub and check the sound ?

Agreed. I have my centres as +4 and playing movies at + 4 DB with sub gain at 40%. That works beautiful for movies. This system is ok for movies, but totally lacks in music since these are single full range driver satellites in sealed boxes. Definitely needs a speaker upgrade. A Centre channel upgrade and Front Stereo speakers if replaced, would sound fantastic for the price.

Hello everyone! I went to a reliance digital store to audition various home theatre packages and initially had the yht-299 in mind as I already have a PS3 to work as a blu ray player. But when I talked to the rep there, he told me that I should only go for the yht 299 if I want to build the system myself by getting speakers separately. Otherwise he said that I should go for an Htib around the same price range which will sound better than the 299. I did do an audition of the bundle but could only do music as it wasn't hooked up to a TV. Also due to too much crowd and noise, I couldn't audition it properly. He showed me a Sony E4200 blu Ray system but that didn't impress me that much and also it just had a single optical cable input. Rejected.
I'll visit the store another time to audition more systems. They told me that they don't sell the component speakers there.
Sony N7200w system appears to be good too but I couldn't find any reviews about it
Now the question is-Are the speakers in 299 awesome, good or okay?
If not then what is the alternate. I'm open to suggestions and I can go up to 50k.

And FYI, the 299 was for 36k at the Chandigarh RD.

Are the speakers in the 299 bundle awesome, good or okay? The reliance digital guy told me that I should only go for it if I want to eventually change the speakers and he said that I should go for Htib around the same range. He showed me the Sony e4100 I think, but it was okay. I couldn't audition the 299 properly though, will visit again.
Also what about the Sony n7200w? It has wireless surround speakers so no cables going to the back.
If 299 speakers aren't good then what is the alternative?

If your room is small to medium (under 200sq. feet) then YHT-299 speaker are good. It is very good performer if room size is small and want to enjoy perfect separations in small size room (Large speakers would be overkilled). Above this room size you can update the speakers to Bookshelf/Floorstanders. But if room is small and you use big speakers then you have to control (limit) the sound of each channel because of its loudness, which doesn't make sense if you are not using speakers to its potential.
