Friends
I am in Bangalore. I am in the market for a "first timer" LCD tv. I am looking for a 40 inch TV.

Usage:

1. HD Movies (60%) (Blu Ray rips, mkv, AVCHD)
2. Sports (30%) (F1, Soccer & Cricket WC - This will be pure SD as i dont have a HD DTH. But i want to be future ready for Sports HD DTH)
3. Gaming (10%) - PS2 only

I went through the catalogs in Sony World and finalized on

40EX710 - Rs. 79,500
40EX500 - Rs. 69,500

I have a small concern on the Edge Lit LED (as its a new technology). I am ok with the 10k difference but still not convinced on the new technology compared to CCFL.

Also, for a 10k difference, i get additional features in EX710
a) Ethernet Connection,WiFi, Internet Video (yes, i love this)
b) Digital Audio Output (For future HT connectivity)
c) DLNA (not sure if i can fully utilize this feature but good to have)
d) Lesser Power Consumption (Go GREEN)
e) USB Support (710 has DivX support)

Hope you folks got the confusion in my mind. Apart from the EdgeLit technology which i have my own doubts (could not find extensive reviews) - i am convinced.

Also, is there any tips of how to reduce the price further? I did not see the Sony World budging on prices and i havent visited other tv shoppes.

Appreciate you help.
Thanks :)

Considering your requirements . Samsung and LG should fit the bill...

There are tons of threads discussed various models. Please go thru the Television section of this forum.

Good Luck.

i dont love sony anymore due to their arrogant prices :p

Well, the prices are not so arrogant in this space IMHO.

BTW, i talked to a dealer here who said he can give me
KDL-40EX710 - 73,000

If i look at the comparable Samsung model - C5000 - 80K (havent bargained on this but on the website)

Am i missing something?

After research, i ended up with Sony. Just the difference between the models is my confusion. And in the forum, i havent seen any EX710 comments and hence the question on the technical front.

Any inputs?

Well if the price difference is just 10k then its worth the money after from the extra features you already have mentioned. It also has a faster panel then the EX500.

As far as discounts goes.Sony adopts the SURE program(Sony Unified Retail Execution) which forces dealers/retailers to stick with MRP price, this is done to prevent competition.
But i do hear sometimes dealers giving good deals, although won't be advertised.
But the discounts won't be to the same extent as LG and samsung whose MRP prices are a joke, just like the cracker in diwali where MRP prices vs actual steet price.

Grey market prices on the other hand are way cheap a 40EX500 costs about 55k a few months back.

You alternate options are Samsung C6xxx edge lit lcd and C6xx CCFL lcd.

There is very little difference in Sony and Samsung, but in the Sony you get one panel and one panel only.where as in the samsung you can get upto 3 or even 4 different types of panels each have different contrast, viewing angles, response time.

Hello HR manj

I am too confused about these 2 models as i am interested in sony also
these 2 models are the only avaiable with the 100 hz and their price is reachable
i am really confused about , i live in egypt the ex 500 is the one available now and the EX 710 is not yet
i have asked many questions about this confusion in the title confused between ex500,600,700 you can have a look at some answers from adder and other friends, there is a review about ex 710 on the last page recommended by adder
also you can read some opinions from this site http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1276422&page=2

and
Sony Bravia EX713/EX710 EDGE LED Owners Thread - AVForums.com

i thought i wanted to open a discussion betwenn ex 500 and Ex 710 and that is good that you have done that
i think that you have to wait a while until some more reviews appear about ex 710 may be wait till december may be the prices will go down also at the last month of the year
and plz keep us updated with inofrmation and what do you think from ur search
i also want to tell u that on the site mentioned i read one person saying that his 32 ex710 panel was AU and that is something not good , i suspect about his opinion but that is what he said so i recommend u to wait or go to the shop and see for urself the panel type using the service menu
Good luck

hi,
Who was that dealer. I want to check if they have stock. What is your experience with KDL-40EX710

KDL 40EX710 is available for a price of 79900 at croma delhi.

It certainly is better than its predecessor ex500.

Faster UI and with couple of added features.

One thing i would say here that no matter what price sony is selling for, each model carries the previous model's good features and unlike the competitors who shun few of the features from the previous models,SONY maintains some uniformity.

In nutshell For features to get passed to the newer models the technology has to be upfront, which in my knowledge SONY is at BEST.

The back panel of sony 710 some fibre plastic to control the heat and it has wi fi,some some small features which doesn't worth 10 to 15k ...
For that price of around 80000 u can buy a local dimming lg 47 inches le5500 led which comes for 82000 after bargain...

Well the EX710 is primarily more expensive due to the LED edge light source.

The LE5500 has a IPS panel with natively poor black compared to VA based tvs especially tvs with SPVA panel such as the 40EX710 . The LE5500 doesn't have full local dimming more like limited dimming.

The main significant advantage of the LG is the size.

Hi
I really dont know how come LG 47 le5500 is available for below 90 grands?

Its discounted price is 99,900 from MRP of 1,03,000 INR.

Besides for the local dimming which LG is bosting of neither is that effective nor does it is true local dimming!

Hi everyone and a very happy new year to all of you.
Few days back i purchased SONY KDL40EX710 led lcd,and i am simply loving it.

Today i got the Sony Blu ray player BDPS370 and paired it with my sony bravia 40EX710.

Needless to say it was hassle free due to the Bravia Sync HDMI control,The beauty is that my mom can actually play the DVD/blu ray with ease owing to auto switching on of the LCD due to bravia sync[No need to seperately switch it on and then selecting the source].It was splendid to see how intelligently the unit turns on,and displays its menu.

Watched the BLU ray TITLE''LEGION" which came bundled with the blu ray player. The details were marvellous, and the sound in Theatre mode was excellent.

The BEST part about the combination is the Surround sound of the BRAVIA SERIES,Specially in theatre mode.

I am GLAD to have SONY product and would definately recommend them to people and friends.

NEXT in the wish list is TATA SKY HD and then a SONY AV PLAYER/YAMAHA RXV667,would try my best to find out the best SONY AV receiver, again owing to the ease of Bravia sync and teeny weeny features that actually help a lot in easing out the daily use, like in this case the Auto shut feature when the LCD is in idle state depending upon what time gap you have selected from the menu.[also the presence sensor which works fine and the ambient light sensor which is added bonus]

I understand today why Sony doesn't give away their products with too many offers,
"SONY like no other",indeed they know very well where they stand.
