KEF speakers

Hi,
Only problem is there is no local dealer for other brands, hence bit difficult to install and ASS would be an issue.

Hi,
Again one advice needed. I am ready to spend around Rs.100k for KEF in phased manner.
But honestly such powerful system in small living of 15x10 sq. feet----is it serious overkill and overspending of hard earned money? Heart says go for best---KEF, but brain says its too much-----get something like POLK blackstone with Denon in 60k and enjoy.
Give me correct advice please. I must decide system in weeks time and proceed further.
Thanks

Hi friends,
any views please?

Do what heart says, You won't regret. Because if you go with Polk/Denon... You can't live peacefully (you will always think about KEF) LOL

Once you hear your best KEF system at your home, you will feel that your decision was right.

"my opinion"

First and foremost, overkill will be decided by what set-up you end up with. IMHO, starting with even a Q500 FS will not be an overkill. Yes, you need to get your placements right to avoid boomy sound but definitely not something which people are not doing here as of now.

For reference, I have Paradigm Monitor 9 in a room which is 15x11 and is not a dedicated HT room. All that means is that I don't play at high volumes but at sane volumes, I love the sound. No boominess at all. However, would I be tempted to put in a subwoofer in my set up? No. That would be an overkill for my place for now. Center can be thought about though.

As for your budget ... no one is pushing you splurge 100k in one go. I believe the safest approach is to buy bit by bit where each bit is not compromised in quality over quantity. Hence, to avoid buyer remorse after having still spent more than 50k, buy what you like to hear.

However, have you heard either KEF or Polk so far?

Hi friends,
I am inclining towards KEF now.
I didnt hear KEF or POLK....Not available in my town and not possible in next few months to visit Mumbai.
My new homes painting to start, hence must decide in week or so.

Hi,
Then hows this?----
***KEF Q300 (Rs 33k)
***Denon 1612 (Rs 29.9k) OR 1713 (36.9k)---which one?
Whats aproximate/reasonable prices? (so that I can bargain)
In future, what to be added next---centre or sub woofer or surround? Means what should be the order? Kindly tell models of the same too.
Thanks

Not sure of the current ongoing discounts but if those prices are MRP then I would haggle for at least 10% discount.
Next step - you can see how the fronts sound before going either for center or for subwoofer. Centers will allow for better dialogue clarity in movies while subwoofer, well you know, the thump. I do not have a view to KEF's center models.
If you feel bass is not underwhelming without the subwoofer then go for sorrounds after the center.
I would go for 1713 rather than 1612. Going for 1612 will restrict any potential upgrades to any floor stander in the future without the additional expense of a new AVR.

Hi,
@ Milestoneseeker,
Thanks a lot.
Its final----
DENON 1713 with KEF Q300.
Would add centre later, then surround and if needed woofer.
Shall update.

To begin with, wouldn't a component 5.1 setup overwhelm the 15x10 living area? IMHO, you will be better off with a 3.1 setup (2 front, 1 center, 1 subwoofer). And with the budget of 100k, you can afford to get higher quality components for the setup.

If your music requirements are essentially old hindi music CDs, I am guessing they are not great recordings unless you have remastered versions. I speak from my own experience with most of my hindi classic (limited to 70s onwards with likes of Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Lata etc) CDs show pretty poor recordings, especially on a detailed system. The top end is particularly revealing of poor recording.

So that rules out speakers from Paradigm stable with their aluminium tweeter.
Similarly Klipsch's speakers.
The Monitor Audio's Bronze series (BX5 and above) will be too loud for your room size so I would recommend ruling them out too.

Now ... what all speakers are available for your audition? I gather KEF, Polk and Mission are there. Anything else? Out of the above 3, I would rate KEF highest and would recommend Q300s with good stands rather than Q500. This is particularly as you will most likely have the subwoofer. Some people say Q300s are smaller Q700s so they may sound better than Q500s. When I say they sound better, note that I am not implying the "thump" but the musicality.

Other speakers to look out for will be Tannoy's Mercury V series, Energy's Connoisseur series, Mordaunt Short's Aviano series and Sonodyne (not sure of the specific range). These should allow you to buy 2 fronts plus a center. Squeezing in a subwoofer may be tight in 100k considering AVR will also come from the budget. So explore.

And which all AVRs are available for audition? Beside Denon. Denon are great! I have one :) Is Marantz also available? How about the Onkyo and Yamaha AVRs?

And the auditioning has nothing to do with the "technicalities" :) It is all about what sounds right to you. So don't get intimated with the idea of multiple auditions.

Onkyo Guy at Wonderland can offer a 5.1 package with Energy Connossier Series (Cf 30 Front) + Onkyo NR 414 for 95 K. I am sure he can come down another 2.5 K. If you have an option to replace Onkyo 414 with a Denon 1713 or Marantz, this may suit your music taste, room size and budget

He is in Solapur and I am guessing he will procure either from Pune or Mumbai. Not sure if equivalent deals are going in those cities ... I guess you spoke of Bangalore for the offer?

The wiring is pretty logical and straight forward. If I assume the following components are there in your system:

Blu-Ray Player, AVR, TV, set-up box (TataSky/Airtel etc), speakers

Then the way I have it connected is:

TataSky --> HDMI (for a HD box) --> AVR
OR
TataSky --> S Video & RCA Outs (for non-HD box) --> AVR
Blu-Ray --> HDMI --> AVR
AVR --> Left & Right Channel speaker wires --> Speakers (sends audio to speakers)
AVR --> HDMI --> TV (sends video to TV)

So net-net, the entire audio/video is first sent to AVR from all sources (set-up box and BD player in this case) and then AVR splits it to TV & speakers. A total of 3 HDMI cables and a pair of left/right channel speaker cables.

I am using Profigold 14 AWG wires but typically, anything above 12 AWG is good for the set-up. Either you can connect the bare speaker wires to speaker or use some plugs (such as banana plugs). I use banana plugs and they are at an additional cost (starts from Rs. 120/- sorts onwards).

Thanks boss,
It seems easy now.
From what source I can get wires?
Ok, I hope i would get same kind guidance for AVR setting whenever needed!

thanks,

Go for a minimum of 14 AWG oxygen free cables (I have 12 AWG, let me correct myself). Remember, lower the AWG, greater is the damping factor and better is the "audibility". And while I do not want to rake up the debate on "pricey HDMI" cables, my personal opinion is that a cheaper HDMI cable is equally good and I would not recommend the pricey Monster cables. See if you can buy something more "cost effective".

while a good speakers cable is always recomended.....a pricey hdmi cable is a waste of money...just get a normal branded hdmi cable within 500...
