LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

With the break in slides I am able easily see the screen uniformity issue. But after running the break in slides for more than 30 hours, it has reduced. I hope after 100-150 hours of breaking in, uniformity issue will disappear.

For those of you like me (who like things to be explained in a simple way rather than complex words used in conjunction to make your head spin) who are wondering what this screen uniformity is and want to check it if they have it, here is a layman explanation of it with a pic to make things easier.

Screen uniformity is a problem which has also become known as banding. The easiest way to detect this was to input a 20% grey screen to the TV. What should have been a flat colour appeared slightly brighter on the left of the screen, and slightly dimmer on the right, with noticeable variations in between. The screen looks as if it were a little dirty as a result. Also, as is common with large LCDs, very slightly brighter patches are visible at the top and bottom left side of the panel with dark content.

Although this is rarely noticeable during real world content. This said, the fact that it appears under certain conditions does prove the potential for it rearing its head (during pans in televised sports, for instance).

Mannu, is that your screen or just a dummy for explanation?

Whatever unformity issues I had wore off after 4 hours of break-in slides.

No shaiju that is just an example of what screen uniformity issue means, i mean these hifi words jumble up the average Joe, so i tried to explain with whatever little knowledge i had.

My screen has a very negligible uniformity issue and i am still around 25 hours into the burn in period, so i am hopeful that it will improve overtime.

Sri,

I started with 3 hours increasing by an hour subsequently. Now I run 6 hours continuously.

It runs a bit hot at more than 6 hours. So I let it cool for 2 hours before watching any content.

Not very sure if you should do more hours at a stretch. I don't think it has specific benefit other than break-in earlier.

I think doing the break-in is more of to each it's own kind, although recommended settings are between 60 - 65 for contrast and everything else at or below 50, but i kept everything at 45 including contrast and everything in advanced turned off, and i run the slides for a 1 or 2 hours accompanied by very light ps3 gaming ( which although is not recommended ) but i take care not to game continuously for more than 30 mins and have the orbiter option ON always and whenever i get a break in between my gaming session i run the color wash option (here one thing must be kept in mind that after running the color wash option the orbiter option is turned off automatically, so be sure to turn it ON before you start gaming again), till now watched only 1 movie on it, haven't installed TATA sky since HD is still not available at my place, and also i run a slideshow of my fav' Full HD images that i have downloaded over the years.

So basically what i am trying to say is it is different from one person to another, just enjoy the display along with breaking it in, just a little bit of caution goes a long way. but being over cautious ruins all the fun. But then again it's to each it's own, so don't flame me if this is not how you do it, i am just saying this is how i am doing it.

Cheers !!

Sorry to hear that. I hope everything is fine with the new TV. How obvious was this green dancing pixel issue?

Did you get a chance to ask him about enabling ISF calibration menu on the TV?

I could see green pixels all over my screen crawling over blacks. It is not visible from 8-10 ft but the blacks were ruined and images appeared soft.

The guy did not know much about the calibration menu and I was shocked about the replacement to probe him further.

 So sad to hear that, i hope you will get your replacement done in time, don't go by any verbal assurances, ask them to send you an email from their official LG id confirming all of what has been said.

Shaiju,

What content were you playing when you were seeing the dancing green pixels. In a complete Black screen were the dancing pixels all around the TV screen or only in few places?

Srinivas,

I can't really say it was like 3rd picture from #2418. That one looks horrible. More like the 1st pic from #2426. Very visible on blacks. Never noticeable from 8-10 ft but as I mentioned before, the fact that it is there ruins the picture quality especially the blacks.

Some say it's dithering, others call it calibration issue but I know for sure that you can't live with. Like a bad dream; one that you know will never materialize but irritates you because you had it and can't forget.

BLASTO,

Yes, I did find my cam but only in time to lose interest to take any pics. Not going anywhere that TV until it is replaced.

Called LG Mumbai sales head and he confirmed that my request has been forwarded. Will take 2-4 working days to replace.

Any chance of refund? I heard LG has 1 month return policy.. See if you can get a refund and look at other options if the dancing pixels are bugging you this much. It could be in all the PK550s and others might not be noticing it.

I was contemplating the same. What could be a better choice than this one for the price / features / picture? Shame on LG for ruining such a good product with those green pixels and no advanced calibration menu.

Think I will wait for the new set, evaluate and then decide.

Those green pixels are unacceptable to me if they reappear. Is it there on 2009 LG models? Never noticed them on Samsung or Panasonic.
