Is Audyssey calibration helpful in listening to 2 channel music. Also does it remain active in direct mode?

in direct mode all the eq gets disabled

and it should help 2 channel music also as it calibrates all speakers

So the callibration wont work in direct mode? So do I then have to switch of direct mode once I callibrate for Audyssey?

I have more questions:
Is there any "stereo" mode for Audyssey?
Is it even geared towards stereo listening? OR will it just try to simulate surround sound if you calibrate with just 2 front speakers?
What would be the benefit of an Audyssey tuning on stereo? What are one's expectation when using Audyssey for stereo listening?
Are you looking for "balance" of volume between left/ right speakers?

I have used SR5005. Audyssey helped in Movies but not for Music.

In Movies, Surrounds came alive only after I did Audyssey.

In Music, I somehow felt that the lows very missing. Probably Audyssey reduced it due to my home Acoustics.

However, Multi Eq XT available in new Marantz Series and Denon Series (1912 and Above Models) is very effecient compared to Multi Eq available on old Models.

I have checked Denon 1912 with Eq XT and resilts were by far amazing compared to Multi Eq on SR5005.

Again, all these inputs are purely based on my listening with my Setup.

After running the Audyssey in 5.1 Mode, Select Stereo while listening to Music. Then Turn On the Audyssey. Tone Controls will be turned off automatically.

If you want to do Audyssey Setup for 2 Channels, you should be able to achieve it.

1. Manually select your Center, Surrounds and Sub Woofer Speakers as None in speaker Setup.
2. Then you can Run Audyssey.
3. This way AVR should only calibrate 2 speakers.
4. If you want to Bi-Amp your Speakers, Bi-Amp your speakers. Manually Set Amp to Bi-Amp and then Select Bi-Amp while running Audyssey.

I have personally done this with SR5005 with 4.0 setup (2 Fronts, 2 Srrounds). While running Audyssey, it only showed 4 Speakers since I had selected Center and Sub as None.

Only Disadvantage I see is when you wanna watch movies, you will have again set Center, Surrounds as Small / Large and Sub Speakers as Yes and Audyseey wont work that time since you are changing your setup from 2.0 to 5.1 and it requires re-running of Audyssey Setup.

MultEq XT is a superior version of audyssey found in denon 1912 and yeah the result is amazing, the only thing to keep in mind is make sure you check the channel levels and audyssey stuffs like dynamic volume etc , the biggest problem is somehow the audyssey will make the channel levels very low, so make all of them level them listen the difference

audyssey does calibrate every speaker in ur system , its worth noting which version of audyssey your AVR supports, is it multEQ, or XT or just 2Eq, based on these filter are applied to every speaker hence even 2 channel stereo mode will feel the difference

there are other factors also which will impact the quality of sound, like restorer found in denon, crossover, and most importantly speaker quality

if we set center/ surround to none, will it not create a phantom center channel? Also it may try to compensate for surrounds - like a sound bar.

OP's question for Audyssey was for 2 Ch Setup. So he can try Audyssey with different settings. Setting Center/ Surround to none will calibrate only Fronts Speakers which he can try to figure who it stands against Audyssey with all speakers for 2 Ch Setup.

Performed Audyssey on my 5.1 . Have FS, but Audyssey set them to small; Cross Over to 40KHz (which is the low end of my Floor standers) It has set channel levels low ( all - db) and so volume/impact at high volumes is low.

What should I do? Should the front/centre be set to large?

Thats Strange. Mine always detected as Large. Audyssey sets it small due to your room acoustics. Are you speakers too close to wall? If yes, move them a little forward and re-run Audyssey. Where have you placed your Mic?

Yes speakers are around 1 feet from wall. Have placed the mic at the listening position. Audyssey selects cross over at 40hz (near speakers lower end) though I have heard X over should be set at 80 Hz.

Also should I keep dynamic volume on?

You need to try it out and see what suits your ears. You can manually set frequency to 80 Hz.

Honestly speaking, I never liked Audyssey for Stereo Listening. Always Bypassed it with option Bypass L/R in Audyssey.

Did not understand the comment around Audyssey setting channel level low and so make all of them level.

Infact I am also facing similar issue - Audyssey is setting speakers to small (despite big speakers) and also setting channel dbs to negative - Volumes are much lower/ impact is absent even when I turn on my AVR to 70 levels (on absolute scale - max 80).

I am now referring to 5.1 channel mode and callibaration for HT. ( for two channel - I am happy with pure direct mode)

Precisely Same problem when I tried with SR5005. Had to increase the volume like nuts.

Multi Eq is not as great as XT. I have used same speakers with Denon 1912 with Audyssey XT and results were by far way better than 5005.

You can try increasing the Speaker Level for each channel manually and see the results. eg. Increase all channels by 5db.
