Movies Discount and Offer threads :D

This is what's preventing me to buy from Amazon US/UK. Especially the customs duty horror stories and the wait for the parcel which is much longer than flipkart's
There is no hassle from Amazon.com...

- Yes. Duty is charged upfront. But it is well known in advance. The rate is 30% of Base Cost + shipping. But you do get a small refund some 45 days later.
- Amazon.com takes 2/3 days to ship the order. Till shipping time, credit card is not charged. This is useful in case you wish to cancel the order.
- Once the order is shipped, credit card is charged.
- It takes maximum of 8 days for the package to reach your doorstep
- Shipping is usually via Aramex and is completely trackable/traceable.

Here are the tracking details of my last order:

Advantages of Amzon.com
- It is quite possible to find cheap deals; sometimes BDs are as low as $4.99 to $10.
- Free shipping of order over $125
- All costs known upfront
- All the facts as mentioned above

Disadvantages:
- $ has become dearer by Rs. 10 in the last couple of months
- New titles are expensive
- Customs duty - no escaping that
- $125 + customs duty of $50+, is a lot of money

Last time I ordered around May/June, it was Rs 80 for a GBP. Now it is over 100. Which effectively raised the prices by 25%. :(

Sad for us. Don't think those days will come again when You can get GBP for Rs 80.

I was trying to place an order of $ 130 @ amazon US. All total showed 12k+ for some 13 BDs including custom duty. In this way each BDs cost averagely 1k. Though I dont know how much the duties will be refunded!!!

So I took a chance and started to experiment. It is my first order from outside India. So i will test both UK and US to know which is suitable for me.

Went ahead and placed order for 2 BDs at amzon UK for 15pound including shipping.

Goodluck Gurujee, you can expect a minimum 30% hit for customs duty: I was recently hit for almost 100% duty-I tried to speak with the Customs chappies at Mumbai, and was asked to contact with so many details ( I just took a chance call) that I said thank you very much.
Now, I guess we will all have to subsidise the Food Bill( Sic)- and lets face it- these are all unnecessary imports. Dont waste & $ -on such luxuries- just give it to the Govt. and it wont be long before it hits 70 to the dollar.

saw the offering on amazon uk.. good but nothing great. I shortlisted a few titles and it added to 45 GBP.

Most of the movies, I have watched some time or the other either on Start Movies or on DVD, so found the whole exercise fruitless to shortlist and pay so much for titles that i have seen earlier..may be will see again, but is it worth to spend so much not to mention the shipping if any and customs..

decided to give it a miss..

Normally in Amz-UK the boxsets are cheaper for many. So for around GBP 7-10, you can get 3 to 5 movies in one boxsets. The shipping charges can be setoff against the VAT refund of around 16%. So finally each movie will cost around GBP 2-3, which is a good price, only if no customs are levied. I have been 100% unlucky so far, so had to pay somewhere in the region of 44% or so as duties (collected by the delivery postman). Thus making it equal to GBP 3-4 per title. Till two months ago the exchange rate was Rs 80 for GBP. Hence the landed cost was around Rs 250 to Rs 300 per BD. But if you look at individual movies it will be really costly and with the shipping charges and customs and now the exchange rate, all will make it unaffordable.

BTW, I used ZAVVI/ HUT of UK as well, and there also I need not to pay any duty. But you don't get the VAT refund benefit there and the Shipping charges are fixed GBP 9.99 for any number of titles (when I ordered last time). But the best thing is that many a times you can look for additional discount coupons (very common), which is rarely available in case of AMZ.

I will not buy a movie unless I really have 'something' for it even if there's 90% off. :ohyeah:

Some offer is going on at M Biswas Symphony, Esplanade, Kolkata

On certain BDs, buy 2 get 1 free. (prices will be on MRP though). There are many titles of bond, bourne series etc. If you buy 1 bd from that range, then you get 20% off.

There is also a small section with compilation of DVDs, ACDs, VCDs. Any 3 for Rs.199

Collection is not that good (at least not my kind of thing). Somehow I managed to pick a Greatest Hits of Black Sabbath ACD :yahoo: and two dvd movies Dasvidaniya and Phoonk.

Here (in my city) this Psycho (BD cover) is available in the offer.

You mean its available for Rs.799 in your city. That's great price. I will have a look at the local shops here in Calcutta and find out the price.

By the way, are you aware of any such titles (mostly horror/ thriller) available at your city with similar discount?

Not for 799/-, it is available for 1299/- any 2 BDs from the offer stock in which all these and many more titles are available.

so it costs 650/- each :yahoo:

I am not sure if they have any good titles left in stock, this sale is going from last 2 month (may be more) but now they have very limited stock.
FYI all titles MRP is 1299/-, they are offering BUT 1 GET 1 FREE, seller confirmed that they will have another offer very soon from EXCEL which is BUY 2 GET 1 FREE and the price of each BD would be around 999/-, so in this way one BD will cost 666/- which is almost similar than this offer.
