Movies Discount and Offer threads :D

Not trying to dissuade you or anyone from buying. This is how I rate HP movies:

Warning: Mild spoilers
  1. The Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone: 4.5/5
Very faithful to the book. Very good narration, editing, etc. Captivating to the end.
    .
  2. The Chamber of Secrets: 4/5
Once again fairly faithful to the book. Good direction. I would rate Chris Columbus to be the best director of the lot considering that he had rank amateur children to direct.
    .
  3. The Prisoner of Azkaban: 2/5
A classic case of how one of the best books/story of the franchise is murdered in film. Tried to introduce wacky comedy, smart-ass talking shrunken heads! Really? Sirius Black played by Gary Oldman was the saviour to an extent.
    .
  4. The Goblet of Fire: 3.5/5
Very fast paced and exciting. Bit spoiled because the First Task of the tri-wizard tournament was way overplayed and overshadowing. Comparatively, the third and most difficult task was pale and uninteresting. Changed the ending that irked me. But good movie overall.
    .
  5. The Order of the Phoenix: 3/5
Now this was a real challenge. How does one fit a 880+ pages book into 2+ hours movie? I would have loved to have it split into part-I and part-II to do some justice. Leaves out (or barely touches) some important details - The legacy of HP and LV and why HP is the chosen one. Average, overall.
    .
  6. The Half Blood Prince: 3.5/5
Same problem of the previous movie - how to crunch the details into 2+ hours? Chopped out quite a few LV memories. Ginny/Harry romance downplayed (OK, no issues). Snape did not get the screen presence that he deserved. Good, overall.
    .
  7. The Deathly Hallows - Part I: 5/5
Now this was really how the movies should have been made. People who watched the movies only without reading the books found it boring, sans action, etc. But it does build the tension very well. I loved every bit of it. You decide.
    .
  8. The Deathly Hallows - Part II: 4/5
A little disappointed after the high of the previous movie. Ending was changed which again irked me no end. HP vs. LV: the fight was way different in the book. I guess, director's perogative. Can wands be broken by ordinary force? I doubt. But the much missing action of the previous movie was present now.

I have movies 1~5 on DVD and 6~8 on BD. I did not think that buying BD copies of movies 1~5 was worth (except may be HP-1).

Thanks for the info Saket.
Despite the current decent price, I had avoided buying this item.
I never watched any Harry Potter movie. Don't know how it would look to me now.
I tried to watch first harry potter movie in theatre and was bored to death.
But, that was the time I hardly used to understand English ;-) yeah, I knew how to read and write English. But to listen and understand English was hell of a hard work for me those days.

If possible, could you provide any inputs that can motivate me giving a try again to Harry Potter movie ??

Out of all the HP Movies I still like HP1 the best, simply because alongwith Harry, you get to experience the magical side of the world for the first time, and its really breath taking IMO. And as just4kix said, read the books once if you can. That will give you a better idea of whats going on screen. TBH by the fifth movie, I was clueless at times about what is happening till I read the books.

Oh and at 18$ its a Must buy. I bought it for 32$ AFAIR

Thanks 'just4kix' for your detailed review. My sincere thanks for your time on writing it.
As the deal is quite an steal at 17.99 GBP; I am ready to take the risk; as still it would take me much lesser time than reading all those 8 fat books !!

grown up reading HP books..love them!! and for the movies..like them too except for prisoner of azkaban .

a good deal on blus for sure.

This will be your cost:

HP 1~8 Box Set: 17.99
VAT Refund (less 20%): -2.99
------------------------------
Base price: 15.00
Shipping: 3.58
------------------------------
[a] Amazon price: 18.58 or INR 1635.04 (1 = INR88)
Approximate customs duty: INR 733.00
[c] 3.5% on bank charges for Forex txn: INR 57.23
------------------------------
Total [a+b+c]: INR 2425.27
------------------------------

Works out to INR 303 per movie - a great deal. If you mark the package as a gift (to yourself), you may escape customs duty also (but don't bet on it).

hey, thanks for info. I havent purchased anything from abroad. Does this offer includes custom? Getting it from amazon UK will be a risk? How much may i have to give for shipping?

I just ordered it from Amazon UK and it costed 21.57 including shipping.
As far as customs is concerned, it's all depends on your luck. There is another thread having discussion on custom duty applied on Amazon UK items.

I am sorry, to say but the amazon offer on Harry Potter is over, and is now back to GBP 28.00

Well, regarding your queries...

No, the customs charges are not included and have to be paid. Many of us here, have paid customs duty on importing Blu-ray/DVD's upto as high as 45% of the invoice value + shipping.
But many a times, the package comes without any customs duty levied on it. So, its pure luck.

When you buy Blu-ray's/DVD's from amazon.co.uk you get a VAT deduction of 16.66% of the product value and a shipping charge of GBP 3.58 for 1 unit is added. The VAT deduction is only applicable for non-lightning deals on amazon site.

So, if you had taken the Harry Potter offer (lightning deal), you would have ended up paying as...

HP Cost 17.99
Shipping 3.58
----------------
Total: GBP 21.57
----------------

And without the offer...

HP Cost 28.00
VAT (-) 4.66
Shipping 3.58
----------------
Total: GBP 26.92
----------------

And yes, as just4kix said "If you mark the package as a gift (to yourself), you may escape customs duty also (but don't bet on it)"

Oh my bad luck...offer gone. :( though it is still good than purchasing from india.
What if i mark it as a gift and send it to my relative and will collect it from them !

nope it doesnt work that way...even if u mark it as gift..u will have to pay customs...i always mark my blus as gift but had to pay cutoms all the time.
amazon puts the price on the packet(even if u chose gift) so its 99% of the time u will have to pay customs

People from Maharashtra/Gujrat who are ordering from Amazon, UK will get their parcel routed via Mumbai GPO. Mumbai GPO has become smart and started levying duty irrespective whether "gifted" or not. Others may(?) escape duty, if parcel is marked as gift.

Some of the interesting upcoming deals on amazon.co.uk today...

Prometheus to Alien: The Evolution Box Set [Blu-ray] [1979]

Anyone who does not have the Aliens series can go for it... It is a 5 movie set with 9 Blu-ray discs including the latest movie Prometheus in 3D. Also includes a Weyland Corporation T-Shirt, Art of Prometheus exclusive book extract, Art cards and Posters.

Currently priced at GBP 58.29 but once the offer is revealed in 5 hrs 15 mins it will definitely be very low.

Any guesses???

Trials of Life [Blu-ray]

A 1990 TV show narrated by Sir David Attenborough. This is a restored edition with 4 discs.
Priced at GBP 16.00, waiting for the discounted price to be revealed.

as per my knowledge and friend circle in banglore none ever have been charged , bangalore and delhi ncr are most lucky :P

Not true. I have been charged a couple of times in Bangalore.

recently ? coz saket bro lives in banglore touch wood he hasnt been charged , even some other friends from different forum.

but the hit rate is lesser than mumbai and nearby region who have bad rates

i got thunderball blu ray today from post office was charged 150 rs on 11 pound item

now they charge all items above 10 pound for sure 100% for mumbai guys.

10 to 20 gb pound is 14.71% rate

and 20 gbp and above is 41.42% rate as per i have been charged in 2 months. i now avoid amazon uk , unless the box set of 5 movies and it comes below 20 gbp

funny thing i again got parcel from amazon usa direct order shipped by them via aramex , the guy came and asked for 200 something rs customs. i again claimed i paid in advance to amazon usa. and they pay ur office in usa

he called his boss and boss said custom is prepaid and dont ask them , again he was counter checking his boss again and again asking are you sure coz its written in signing document. finally delivery guy agreed to his boss lol.

so beware about this.

How is Tangled 3D?

Amazon US for $20, Amazon UK for 20GBP.

As a movie, it is extremely good. Animation is cool, dialogs are witty and funny. I own the 2d bd. Check price in India websites - i believe it is 1499. That may work our cheaper. If any 2d bd is above $15 or 12, and 3D bd is $18 or 15, the price in India is equivalent.
