I was in Bangalore this past weekend and took the opportunity to call on Mr Murthy the well regarded audio enthusiast at his shop "Tools and Trade" on Commercial Street. We made our way through the miserable Bangalore traffic on Saturday afternoon and found his shop right at the end of this legendary shopping area - the third last shop on the left or seven shops after the Westside Store.
I had called Mr Murthy before arriving so he was expecting me. After brief introductions he offered me a seat next to his counter and took time away from his regular business (which he told me was in no way related to his audio interests). His shop is a great little place with all kinds of bustling trade going on mostly with power tools, band saws, etc very similar to something on say Nagdevi Street in Bombay. Despite all that was going on, Mr Murthy took out a long note book and politely began asking me about my music system and what kind of music I listen to.
Each question was posed with patience and genuine interest of my experience of audio. He shared with me his journey into audio and his lack of technical background in electrical components. This he said was the reason he just went about trying different types of cable materials by trial and error and built up a first hand experience of what works best. What surprised me was that he does cables and power conditioners on his free time and purely as a hobby just for the love of it all. All the items he has are sold mostly on approval and he didn't take any money from me despite my best efforts to pay at least a small advance amount.
My reason for the visit was to get some bi-wire speaker cables along with some interconnects. After giving him the lengths I needed he noted down my address, email and phone numbers and said that he would send me the items by courier to Hyderabad if I couldnt pick them up. Needless to say I was stunned. He even offered to send me a spare power conditioner he had after I brought up the topic on the quality of power and it's effect on the music. I can only say that it was an amazing experience to talk with a gentleman like Mr Murthy. I had read about his good nature on here but to experience it first hand was something I wanted to share on here so that others may know that there are true gentlemen still out there.
By the time we finished our meeting my wife was still in the middle of some shopping. Reluctant to leave this great shopping area she came over while I called for our taxi. I add this as a sort of note to all the guys out there who can find an audio oasis of great audio knowledge in Mr Murthy's place while the women go crazy with the shopping all around. Next time anyone on here visits Bangalore make sure you go over and meet Mr Murthy. And he makes some awesome kit as well.
I had taken a couple of photos (with Mr Murthy's permission)
The nice shop called "Tools and Trades" where Mr Murthy plies his trade.
