My integrated amplifier search

sid,

i have a good opinion of the Atoll IN50 or even the IN80. The IN50 should do well for a bedroom systems with paradigm Studios.

I heard the Atoll at Alliance4 in Mumbai. costing about 58k MRP.

Perhaps one of the high end Onkyo(Integra series) amps or a Denon? I dont have any first hand knowledge of them but they are locally available.

Thanks George - I did consider some Denon options available from ProFx, but not many reviews professional or otherwise recommending them, so decided to swing my search towards these brands.
BTW the offer price on Rega Brio from Hi-Fi mart is just fantastic. IMO it is the most VFM deal I have seen during my search and is either equal or lower than most international pricing. Way to go!
Cheers,
Sid

Hi Sid,

I have not heard the Paradigm Studio 20 speakers. I looked up a bit on their signature. You may try the Creek Destiny or the Sugden (Class A forgot the model) SS integrated amps. I think both are available in India, because I have heard them at a Dealer's place in Kolkata. They may be slightly higher than 1L, but both are quality amps.

Regards.

Thanks Asit - I will look up creek. I did consider the entry level Sugden initially as I heard there was a dealer in Kolkata, but my concern is the low power. Not too sure if 20 watts will cut it with the Studio 20's. Of-course one has to listen to confirm but this won't be possible.
Cheers,
Sid

The Studio 20's are 8 ohm loads ( i think ) with 2 drivers and 20W Class A should be more than adequate.. the issue will be the heating factor and since this is a bedroom system.. it will be better to avoid Class A.

just my 2 cents..

i was to tell you about the Creek destiny 2 also.. but havent heard it.. only stereophile glowing review..

Thanks MPW, the rated impedence rating of the Studio 20 is quite deceptive. Actual measurements (SoundStage! Measurements - Paradigm Reference Studio 20 v.3 Loudspeakers (5/2004)) reveal that the impedence drops to as low as 3 ohms at 200 hz and is below its rated spec. at many other parts of the frequency spectrum. So while it should be ok to drive these speakers with low wattage amps. it may not prove to be ideal. And yes, as you mentioned heat is entirely undesirable in this application. Also my room is on the larger side, 20' x 14', so I will need a little bit of a grunt to get to decent spl levels.

Sid

If you can up your budget you could consider an SL RG14E, great control over the speakers. Single box unit consisting of MC/MM as well, amp section can control 3 ohm dip without issues
Saves you extra cables and phono stage

Thanks Sridhar,
After my recent acquisition of the kraft 250, I am trying hard not to blow my budget:lol:. Of-course I am still open to the option of pairing my unused Parasound Jc2 pre-amp with a new Odyssey Khartago, which should give me a sound comparable to higher end integrateds, not to mention stability down to 2 ohm loads. However I am leaning towards a smaller, compact amplifier due to aesthetic and space concerns.

Sid

I have been reading of an user pairing his Rega Brio amp. with Magneplanar 12 speakers and he is very happy with the sound (86db efficiency and nominal imp. 4ohms with likely dips to 3 ohms frequently). This puts me at ease that this if I were to choose this amp. it should be able to drive the studio's quite well. Only wish that I knew how it would sound- unfortunately no way to tell without an audition.
cheers,
Sid

You should listen to the Trigon Energy Sid. I would choose it over all these amps. The exposure is a good amp though. But I certainly feel the Trigon at its price point will outdo the exposure.

Wouldnt you be able to take an audition of the Rega Brio with Absolute Phase in Bangalore? He used to also sell Paradigms, so you may be able to check both with Prithvi.

Hi Sid
You can also add Arcam FMJ A28 / A38 to your list of probable intergrated amps

I guess should be within your budget as well.

They are extremely musical amps. Maybe cannot drive very difficult loads but your paradigms are not that difficult to drive either. Extermely light and aesthetically good looking

Best part is it has an inbuilt phono as well

Yes I would agree Square, and in-fact, it was one option I had considered and even got in touch with the dealer. However it is considerably higher than my budget and secondly since it will be used in a second system which will probably get used maybe 5 hours a week tops, I felt that a more affordable amp . would be a wise choice.

It is an option Sud, but I would have to travel to Bangalore and organize the whole thing. If it was a higher end purchase, I would go through the trouble (as I plan to do so for my proposed speaker upgrade), but at these price levels I am disinclined to do so. However with the list I have and the suggestions pouring in, I think I am in good hands.
