My dear friends,
I am blessed with a new baby in the form of a New Old stock Thorens Long Base TD 125 with NOS SME 3012 . I am as excited as a father who just got the news that he is blessed with a healthy baby! I had to go through a lot of anxiety as the seller was making more and more demands and there were many others whom I knew who were also interested in it. Fortunately, I came to know about it in the nick of time and it was a victory from the jaws of defeat. Plase do not ask me how much i paid for it as I am not going to disclose the price.

Reuben,
I had a Thorens TD 125 with Jelco arm which my brother was using. He used to sayy that he has never listened to a better player in his life. But with a long base SME 3012 and compatible cart, it could be compared with the best. Reuben, I am still waiting for your visit to my place

Hi,

Congratulations.

The Thorens TD 125 LB is a thing of beauty. I love the clean lines and proportions.

I have my eye on one but the elderly gentleman who owns it refuses to part with it.

Regards
Rajiv

Rajiv,
I was wondering if Thorens 125 with 9' arm can be modified to LB if you have a 12' arm. Also, if you can suggest what would be the best plinth for the Thorens 125

Hi,

Kuruvilajacob, I think that the original Thorens type plinth is the best. I love the simple lines and classic look.

Thorens TD 125

It might be possible to modify the standard TD125 to the LB version,I am not sure what it entails apart from the obvious change to a bigger armboard.

Regards
Rajiv

Congrats Kuruvila. It has always been on my list of "never miss if you come across" turntables.

Just curious to know if the owner was from India or you bought it abroad? Very rare to have a NOS for this vintage.

Cheers.

great to see this !. NOS is a dream come true..and price is secondary to pride of ownership.. as long as a kidney has not been sold for it ;)

Dear Rajiv and Anil,
A good friend of mine who is now based in Hong kong told me that his dream was a LB Thorens 125. I never dreamed for it and till a few days before the deal, I did not know it was a LB Thorens. So I also did not want to miss it when it came my way. I understand from the seller that it came from Singapore sometime back but was detained at customs for a long time. The story goes that this belonged to an elderly gentleman abroad who is no more and his son mentioned about it to the seller's friend during a party. Any way, it came to Kerala through Singapore and I was lucky that I boarded the bandwagon while it was running and came out a winner.

Thanks Mr. Kuruvila, I used to drive down to Thodupuzha quite often, passing through Kottayam. However its since March this year, my mother in law has been critically ill and is slowly recovering. We were planning a trip during Onam, but put it off till Christmas in order to give her more time to recover.. Shall try to take a drive down to Kottayam solely for the purpose of meeting up.

I am using 2M red. It gives a fairly accurate reproduction . I think you were using Denon Cartridge earlier. Was it Denon 110?. I have used Denon 110 for a very short time. I cannot give you which sounds better but all that depnds on individuals tastes.

WOW, a New Old stock Thorens Long Base TD 125 with NOS SME 3012....

Splendid! Sir, I am glad this reached you. For the passion you have, I am sure you would have had a couple of sleepless nights in the anguish of acquiring this.

Now all thats left for me is to top up the gas in my car and visit you soon. I've got the JP and TD125 to audition now :)

Cheers and looking forward to a write on this...

Dear Mr. Kuruvila, lovely sharing a long 2 hour conversation with you. The last time I actually spoke to someone this long (about turntables) was when my father was alive. Great to relive some old memories. Thanks.

Reuben,
I enjoyed the talk too. For someone just 41, you have a wealth of info and experience. I am sure you are an asset to the Forum
