MY NOS Long Base Thorens 125 and SME 3012

WOW, a New Old stock Thorens Long Base TD 125 with NOS SME 3012....

Splendid! Sir, I am glad this reached you. For the passion you have, I am sure you would have had a couple of sleepless nights in the anguish of acquiring this.

Now all thats left for me is to top up the gas in my car and visit you soon. I've got the JP and TD125 to audition now :)

Cheers and looking forward to a write on this...

You are most welcome to come.

I just got the plinth made for the Long Base Thoren 125. I have used treated Oak wood for the plinth and a new arm board made from teak as the original board made of MDF has a slight bend. I had considered using teak initially but since my Thorens 125 with 9" Jelco arm has a teak plinth, I thought I will go some wood which looks very attractive. I like the grains on the wood. It will give the player a very majestic look. I will be completing the project soon . I thought I will share a few pics of the plinth alone .

My dear friends,
I am blessed with a new baby in the form of a New Old stock Thorens Long Base TD 125 with NOS SME 3012 . I am as excited as a father who just got the news that he is blessed with a healthy baby! I had to go through a lot of anxiety as the seller was making more and more demands and there were many others whom I knew who were also interested in it. Fortunately, I came to know about it in the nick of time and it was a victory from the jaws of defeat. Plase do not ask me how much i paid for it as I am not going to disclose the price.

Great find!!:clapping:,Which magic wand do you have?!!::ohyeah:

My magic want is my mouth. Ask, ask, ask and you will find:)

You remind me of my fav famous Christian song in Tamil " Kelungal Tharappadum, Thattungal Thirakkappadum, Thedungal Kidaiikkum Endrar "YESU" Thedungal Kidaikkum Endrar"..., Mesmerizing & meaningful Song.

Asking is done by quite a few, me included. But zilch ! Either the quality-ask is absent or Kerala is indeed a minefield of vintage TTs ...

Keep asking people. You could come across leads from unexpected sources. I have plenty of such stories but I cannot write on the Forum. Members will be bored to death:)

Kerala is not a minefield but a treasure trove or audio riches. As Mr. Kuruvila said, if one keeps asking here, one would definitely find. Recently I got some old records from a home near my old college. Was surprised to find a rare Chicago live performance box set in amazing condition. Imagine finding something like that in Trivandrum of all places. My parents used to always say that people from Trivandrum used to live simple lifestyles and never used to flaunt their wealth, back in the day. However almost every family had a "gulf connection" while upward families had an American or British connection. We had the Aussie connection :)

I have seen wrestling videos of the old WWF in the mid eighties, even before anyone around here would have ever heard of the WWF. Thanks to the Aussie connection.

Hi Mr jacob, One Thorens TD 125 is coming my way. I have to still get all the details. Just wondering what is the right price for it. I know all depends on the condition, type of arm etc. I will post pics today. Pls suggest.

Belt is missing,The power is coming on and motor is working but the spindle where the belt fits is only vibrating not spinning, the owner says that if the belt is present the spindle will spin, this the confusing part.I wonder the bearing is gone, pls advice.

If you get a TD-125 for under 40k in this condition, buy it. There is nothing that can go wrong in a TD-125 that cannot be fixed. Only thing I suspect is the blue paint job on the top of the turntable. I don't think it is an original color.

Cheers.

Thanks Anilva for your valuable suggestion. I also feel that the blue paint is not an original one, also there is no belt, spindle is not spinning, in-spite of this can i go for it?
How good is this arm?

Motor spindle should rotate even in the absence of belt.

Then what could the problem be and how serious?. I know it is difficult to to tell without seeing but any ideas and assumptions?

Either motor is not getting power and therefore not able to operate, or it is getting power and not operating because it is faulty. I would say this is a risky buy unless you know someone who can rectify the motor. Or you are willing to seek out a replacement motor from ebay, etc.

The Thorens TT condition is ok,cart also looking nice.

From the looks of it, this TT can be easily restored. However please keep in mind the following:

  • Success of restoration depends on your competance with TTs if you are doing it yourself, or the availabiliy/competance of technicians (not too many, I'm sorry to say)
  • Your budget for restoration
  • Your ability to source original spares (never use non-OEM spares unless hot-rodding). Access to markets for spares (particularly in the western world)
  • When arriving at the purchase price, factor in the spare parts and restoration costs

There is always an element of risk involved when buying pre-used, in working condition. If buying pre-used, in non-working condition, there is the obviousl risk coupled with the element of surprise (which is a deadly combination), so please be careful and take a judicious call.
