wow...my granny had one of these....ask me what you want to know and i can surely help...her's met with the same fate when I was a kid...i remember crying for a whole day asking her to give it to me (as a 5 yr old) however, she sold it to a servant for Rs.100/-. This was 1976.

We had the same record player in our home when I was a kid. But it was in non working condition.
Still remember the days when we colony kids gang used to listen to this player by turning the record by hand, during the power failures. And the song goes.....Naaaajaaaaane kyuuun hooouutaaaa hain yeh ziiiiindagi ke saaaaath........achaaanak yeh man kisike jaaaaaaaneeee ke baad kaaareee kyun ussssssski yaaad...choti chooooti si baaaat.....
But had to keep our ears very very close to the needle to listen to this melody. And then I came up with my proudest invention. I taped a paper cup to the tone arm and suddenly the sound was quite audible!
Nostalgic!

I would have loved to work on this. But seems you are in Chennai and I am in Pune.

Hey guys,

Coincidentally, I recently got the same player from a friend, again for free as he was leaving the country, only its in slightly better condition. And I am ALSO from Chennai... What a coincidence!

I would like to know a few things,
- by the looks of it this seems like a fully manual system. Can i fit in a new cartridge, like the mordern ones in the available currently in the market? i have no idea if this is a magnetic cartridge or any other type.
- It has a very wierd output port, nothing like ive seen. not sure if this is a phono from the old days.
- Also the cable that goes from this output goes directly into the speaker in the cover, so the other end of the cable is just the red and black copper wires. Can i convert this to fit into the amplifier input we have in the market now?
- I plugged in the player and.. IT TURNS! woot! it even changed speeds when i changed the rpm. not bad for something that wasn used for 3 years
- looking at the design it seems to me like a motor driven unit, as it did make some noise while turning.. correct me if im wrong

so apart from the above questions i need help getting an amp and speakers for this.
Also how do i find if its a tube or sold state device.. and in layman terms what is the difference?

Thanks in advance. This forum is awesome. :)

Hi,
Don't spend much on this TT.It has a Ceramic cartridge, not good for hifi. Its idler drive TT(pulley). It should have a builtin Amp so you don't need to have phono input on your Amp.The output of a Ceramic cartridge is equal or comparable to line level,so you can directly connect it to speakers. You can also connect it to a diff. amp's line level input(Tape/Aux/Tuner).

Regards,
Sachin

I am not sure if you are still pursuing the restoration of this turntable.

Yes, this turntable can be restored no matter what condition it is in. I used to have similar one. There is no big deal in that. It is a idler drive system and motor can be rewound if it is burnt.

The only downside of this TT is that it a very average one with a low end tonearm and ceramic cartridge. The idler drive system is noisy if I am not mistaken with huge amount of rumble associated with it.

Therefore, you need to decide, if you want to restore or not. I would restore this purely for sentimental reasons and not for any great music quality that I might get out of it. It's your call. If you indeed decide to restore, you can always find means to get help.

Cheers.

Agree with Anilva, not worth the trouble if you're planning for a turntable for hi-fi listening, nevertheless could be a good Sunday afternoon project, if you get a kick out of restoring these pieces of Indian audio history :)

Wow Vivek, you reminded me of my childhood, I have spent many hours listening to Choti si baat EP record. Janeman-2 was my favorite during those days.
Thanks,
Sann

Looks like you're still stuck with getting this turntable to work. If you are ready to courier it to me and back from me, I'll work on this for you. Would just need you to help me source spares (only if required). It wont make sense to restore if the motor is burnt (hope the turntable turns when you switch it on). Let me know if you want me to help, Thanks

first of all, is this the tube version or the solid state version? seems likely to be the solid state version!!

I recently got hold of a similar LP from my wifey's ancestral home. It in a pretty bad shape but she wants me to restore it out of sentimental reasons.

Now first i need to find out if its solid state of with Tubes (how do i do it without opening it up).

Then if it can repaired in Delhi...

A picture would be of help. Especially of the rear and the under part. Should be able to identify it from a photo. Thanks
