Onkyo HTS-3400 review please

friends please help if you can in my purchase of this, am expecting at least a few responses which will take me to the correct source

After using my Sony home theater for last 3 years I bought Onkyo 3400 for Rs 24000 in Vashi, Navi Mumbai as Sony did not have coaxial or optical input through which I could connect Tata Sky HD. So basically my main purpose of buying it is to watch my Tata Sky HD in 5.1.

When my Onkyo was delivered, I immediately removed Sony and connected Onkyo HT to Sony speakers and my Tata Sky HD via HDMI. Tata Sky stopped giving Dolby via HDMI because of some stupid reasons. I have changed mode to Neo Cinema and watched Star Movies HD and the sound was amazing. Sony speakers were delivering amazing quality sound. But these speakers have 3 Ohms and Onkyo require speakers with minimum 6 Ohms I had to take out the whole setup and do the whole rewiring again.

This time I connected HDMI directly to TV and Onkyo with Coaxial cable. Now I am getting audio in Dolby 5.1 but there is no on screen display.

I have read that I can change the priority to coaxial and not HDMI then Onkyo will take audio via coaxial and video via HDMI which I did not try. Have any one tried it?

I have placed my Onkyo in an enclosure where there is little air circulation so most of the time I disconnect it from mains as it gets heated up even in standby or in HDMI pass through mode.

One question: When mains are disconnected will HDMI pass through still works?

I have noticed speakers vibrating more and making annoying noise. I had to change the audio settings to decrease this but the sound quality is completely changed. I have never encountered this in my Sony HT.

But overall pretty impressed with Onkyo 3400

those who are enjoying it - how does the receiver perform when its used as stand alone stereo/AV receiver? this is certainly important from the upgrade point of view

Hi I have gone through the forum..

I am getting one basic doubt. Please clarify.

Is Onkyo-3400 is only the AVR or Speakers,Sub woofers included in the package too? For Rs 25 K?

Sorry If i sound so absurd.

Its an HTIB (home theater in a box). Yes it has an AVR and a 5.1 speaker system.

Hi Venkat.
If u connect tata sky through HDMI to TV and coax to onkyo, you wont get the on screen display from onkyo. That is because onkyo is not connected to ur tv via any video link.

A better way would be if u connect tata sky to onkyo through HDMI and coax. This way, u will get on screen video and 5.1 audio but for this you need to switch on the receiver in ON mode while watching tv.

@Pranavf1
Thanks for the review. So it is not good for music. right?

Baiju,

I have bought one last week. Its good for music that's the impression that i got ... I didnt find movies that great..its ok.. maybe its because i am just keeping the volume at 30 instead of 50 which the onkyo guy gave the demo in.

Music - the 320kbps mp3 files are a breeze to hear and vocals are very clear and bass is punchy.

I bought it from bangalore forum v mall and 25k. The product is good but the demo guy (some david) was a disaster - arguing and looked irritated and i asked to leave the flat without demoing. anyways have complained to the onkyo and guy and still waiting for a new demo man to show up.

If you need more details you can PM.

My take if you are not that a sound guru, and if you dont want to burn a hole in your bank, you can settle for it.

Does anybody using HT-S 3400 hears click noise when changing volume?
Its does not happens while listening to music but while watching Movies and Tata Sky HD, whenever I change volume it makes a click noise after 3 or 5 steps on increase or decrease in volume.

Hi All,
I am looking for an entry level HTIB, been reading about Onkyo 3400 in this thread for a while. Wanted a bit detailed reviewed of 3400 as i am not aware of the audio jargons and this is my first HT
Can any of the owners of 3400 enlighten me more on the product the sound quality etc.

I don't think there is any problem in quoting dealer name and contact no. at least. Even quoted price 'before bargain' should be ok in open discussions.
