Onkyo HTS-3400 review please

Does anybody using HT-S 3400 hears click noise when changing volume?
Its does not happens while listening to music but while watching Movies and Tata Sky HD, whenever I change volume it makes a click noise after 3 or 5 steps on increase or decrease in volume.

Does nobody have this problem?? Guys please response. When I watch Tata sky thorugh optical out then there is no click noise but when I watch it through ARC out of my TV or movies through TV then there is the noise.

Hi All,
Finally decided to go for Onkyo HT-S3400 after reading a few reviews and since the price was in my desired budget. Got it at 15K from Lulu, Muscat :yahoo:

Have done the basic connection of speakers and tested on TV/CD. The initial impression with mp3 is not overwhelming but yet to connect quality audio source awaiting to be impressed by my first HT setup.:clapping:

Hi Saurabh ,
Even i heard the clicking when the Reliever is powered and turned on, wondering what may be the reason

Can anyone guide me as to where to get a good deal in Delhi for 3400/3300.
North Delhi (Pitampura/Rohini) would be preferable.

the deal which they gave me was 24k + one free wire but i took 2 hdmi

Just got my 3400 and set it up (Pioneer 220KV DVP> HDMI> Onkyo 3400> HDMI> LG 42 Plasma). Everything worked on the first attempt, easy installations with colour coded cables and a decent manual. DivX and MP3 files played well from the USB port on the DVP. Video up scaling to 1080p worked, but I could not make out any marked difference, perhaps coz of my old TV.

First impressions: It does fill my 10x14 room with sound at 40 on the dial, but requires almost all the juice it's got to hear details like footsteps and back up instruments on live concert DVDs. The bass is all over the place and needs some serious sub repositioning or db adjustments.

Movies are sounding quite rich, though sound effects are a little overpowering at times. For live concert DVDs, vocals are sounding clear, the rest of the band is currently all mushed up. Have tried the Listening Modes, they make a substantial difference but haven't yet had the time to tune in properly.

The guy who came to set it up has positioned the rear surrounds directly facing the fronts, although the manual says they are best at right angles to the viewer. Have asked him to reposition them in the next couple of days. My guess is that this should ease the congested, over-crowded feel I get currently. Any opinions on facing vs right angles?

Did also tried to connect a guitar amp to the Karaoke mic input of the DVP to play along with CDs, but the DVP manual says HDMI wont do. I'll need extra analog cable connections for the Karaoke function. Guess it'll take a few weeks to get the hang of the new set up.

Overall, it's a giant step up from my old Altec Lansing GT 5051R which is really meant for gaming surround, and am sure will sound better with tweaks and the speakers opening up.

A big thank you to this forum for the helpful advice, info and Group Buys (got the Pioneer DVP there).

Cheers!

^^. Congratulations. Your next update should be a blu-ray player or an HD multimedia player to get maximum potential from your AVR and Plasma display. DVDs won't do justice to the current setup.

Baiju, thanks for all the tips while I was deciding. Finally chose to go with the 3400 with some add ons later.

Now that I've got my toes wet, might as well leap in:)

Next on the list is a Senn 555 for full night marathons, a set of front BS and an HD multimedia player.

Guess my early retirement plans have just been shot to bits.

Might be wrong post here, but I was looking eagerly for karaoke. I wanted to purchase Philips HTS (since it had karaoke), but later ended up with Onkyo HTS3300.
First , can i use Pioneer 220kV for karaoke?
Second, can i use it with Onkyo HTS 3300?

Yes, the Pioneer 220kV has karaoke, and don't see why you would not be able to use it with the HTS 3300 (The only difference between 3300 and 3400 is the number of HDMI out, I think.)

Keep in mind that the Karaoke function is not handled by the HDMI connection between the DVP and AVR. You'll have to hook up extra analog cables. I tried it today and it works fine.

Thanks Cherian,

I got from other thread that you bought Pioneer 220 KV in group buy. Could you please let me know the cost with and without group buy? I was waiting for a good HDMI DVD player for long time since i bought my Onkyo HTS3300 a year ago. HDMI is must as i am planning for 40/42" LCD in near future. Also i am interested in Karaoke(though i haven't sing a song in my life time:), want it just for fun).

So few questions,
1) cost with/without group buy
2) Will pioneer 220KV good enough for LCD/LED (upscaling aspects, i am dumb here:mad:) for atleast 3 to 4 yrs from now
3) Is it good for Karaoke
4) Can we use this player in combo with Guitar/Piano for playing songs along with Music CDs ( again i am completely dumb here:mad:)
5) Hows the performace of audio with ONkyo HTS 3300/3400
6) Does the player support .avi and .mp4 (since most of good torrent downloads are .avi, .mp4 and .mkv (i know this is not supported , but only by few Blue ray players),...)

My main intension in buying pioneer is for fun (karaoke, piano , guitar.etc..) though i have never touched them, but will do so...:)

So if it helps me for Good audio(via HTS3300) and Good Video( LCD/LED) this is ALL IN ONE solution for my needs.

my budget is 70,000 to 80,000 for both speakers and receiver .. what should i go for?? elac or energy is ok?

When you play flac using O!Play HD2 connected to the Onkyo receiver using HDMI..Do you lose the initial 1-2 seconds of the song ? Because I do...and its irritating !!

Even i am loosing initial when i play flac file using O!Play HDP-R1 connected to Onkyo Reciever using HDMI :o

A quick question to experienced 3400 users regarding playing BDrips/BRrips without a Media player.

Will I be able to play these files with 5.1 audio through the usb port of a Pioneer 220KV DVP connected via HDMI to the Onkyo 3400?

Hi Cherian,

Today i purchased a demo piece(since it is only piece available) of Pioneer 220KV DVP for 2000/- from Reliance Digital In. It seems it was extensively used ( looks like my old 6 yrs DVD player). They gave me bill and said i can use it as warranty ( is that ok?)
I do not know if it is a good bet.

Based on your suggestion, i will see if i can keep it or return it (under 7 days they say they accept). I don't want to take unnecessay tension for saving 1500 bucks :D

I have few questions.

Tray is making little sound while opening and closing. Is that common?

Playability: IT is supporting only .avi and does not support mp4, wmv, mkv(obvious).

I am using HDMI out to my ONKYO HTS3300. Currently even when i play mp3, AVR shows as dts

How do i send raw data to ONKYO HTS3300 ( instead of DVD Player doing decoding) ?

Current settings
Audio:
Sound Retriever is grayed out
Virtual Sound is off
Audio DRC is off

Initial Settings: (HOME MENU)
Digital Audio Out
-> HDMI OUT ->Auto (LPCM(2CH), OFF)
-> Digital OUT -> On
->Other Sub options are grayed out(Dolby Digital OUt, DTS Out, 96KHz PCM Out, MPEG OUt)

HDMI Out has LPCM(2CH) , i dont know what it means.

I played an .avi file with audio a52 codec, 3F2R/LFE. AVR shows it as dts ( i feel pioneer is doing conversion). But overall it was playing good, same performance as i play from my Laptop.

Thanks in advance.

Guys.. Today I took a demo of Onkyo 3400....I must say its an amazing wow experience for me!!!!! The audio quality really sounds to me a Rs. 50,000 device.
This machine is really a wowww experience for me...I have heard Onkyo 3300 but this one is much much better IMO...The movies they are playing was even better than the most sophisticated Multiplex theatres...Punches are awesome, effects are awesome...vocal tones was overwhelming and it really exceeded all of my expectations which I had previously with Onkyo 3300.

Many people have complaint that music is not good on Onkyo..I dont know on what basis they says so..I found even music is awesome. It sounds crisp and quality is really really good. I do not find MUSIC is a TURN OFF at all..Its actually a treat to hear even ordinary MP3 files. Everything which has been thrown on it exceeded all my expectations.

Guys those who are trying to buy Onkyo 3300 from Reliance digital or eZone do not go for it.. They only sells outdated Onkyo models..Buy Onkyo 3400 instead...I am sure you wont feel regreted...I have already booked mine and will soon get the delivery...

So go and take a demo of it...Rest is your choice....
