Pass B1

Re: 10uf pp caps

Hi all,

All parts have been ordered except 10uf PP caps. Can someone suggest a good source for 10-uf-12uf PP caps.I have narrowed down two options:
Jantzen 10 UF PP caps
Jantzen 10uF 400V Crosscap Capacitor 027-932 ($120 for 24 caps+$35 shipping)

11uf Axon PP caps, same caps used by Nelson Pass AXON True Cap Metallized Polypropylene Capacitors ($69+$40 shipping)
I feel above Axon caps are VFM but they ship by Small packet air mail which doesn't provide tracking no.
Kindly suggest.

Regards,
Sachin
Sachin, Why not get Axon through SnS? What difference will it make? Generally I ask shipping quote for both India and NY 11413 address.

Hi Om,
Partconnection is a Canadian company, shipping to US is $18(ground shipping takes 10days or more and no tracking)Package weight is 1-2 kg(as per part connection).Total shipping cost would be same IMO.

Then getting it directly is risk though saves money approx Rs. 200/- per person (i.e. Rs 700 (w/ tracking) v/s 500 (w/o tracking, risk)). I do not feel any issues in taking risk.
My call is - go for Jantzen.

Hi all,
Received a fresh quote from Part Connection for AXOn 11uf caps. Its $136 including shipping with UPS(with tracking facility).Kindly share your views.

Regards,
Sachin

Even I have ordered from parts connection yesterday 2 x 10 mfd and 2 x 4.7 mfd for some other project for $20 all inclusive. They charged $1 for matching each pair. Since you have a larger number to buy you can match yourself using a good LCR meter. Shipping was $9.8. The quote seems fine by me.

Looks fine by me. I have also sourced, though in lesser quantities, for parts not generally available here. Worth it.

Hi Doc,
Thanks for reply, their original quote was $108 with shipping(Airmail without tracking)but I asked them to quote for UPS/Fedex(with tracking).
BTW: do we need matched pair of 11uf caps?

Sachin

They are DC blockers, so not matching required. Go ahead.

BTW, I am getting unmatched 60 LDRs for matching from Uriah total cost 138 USD, inclusive shipping with tracking+insurance. waiting for email reply from him. Other part, coils for PS will be next. Remaining are locally available.

I ordered Silonex LDRs (Uriah) for approx Rs.7600 and Indcutor coils (KOA Speer) for PS for Rs 3300/-. Now all other parts will be locally available. I will match nearest 4 LDRs for lowest current at 3 steps and group them for 12 groups. Thanks

For LDR, approx saving will be 4 X INR 80.00 = INR 320/kit (after matching). Inductor coils DC resistance is not specified. Othewise I will replace them.

okay, Parts from local markets are here. Cost was little under 5K, still stereo pots, MUR diodes and power (filter) resistors are at large. How much they are? little under 2 Kg total weight. :D

I think now final sprint will start once imported components and PCBs arrive.

Good Work Sachin.:clapping: Really DIY. You may even look at changing the color of the metal case. The chip amp gallery in diyaudio has some examples.

Thanks Sachin, Looking great minus those screws. For us remaining, I think now time for hunting good/reasonable boxes.

Any advise on faceplate polish(wooden polish)

The traditional route is by using varnish and wax with appropriate shading.
For this you need 1. wood wax - this is the wax used by polishers to first rub into the wood. You first sand the wood and then rub the wax in, till you have an even shine. Then using varnish/polish you apply on top of this in a suitable thickness. You may need to use multiple coats. Either use a brush or cloth dipped in varnish. To add colour to the polishing you may get also colour powder for appropriate wood finish - such as teak, mahogany and so on. these are
available in small packets.
Another variation after wax is to coat one of the speciality paints from MRF for wood such as woodcoat and so on.Application details for that is similar to paint and you can apply that with a brush.

You may try this first on a sample piece of wood/

Sachin, really commendable how you are going about this
rather complex group buy.
In fact, I think you have the distinction
of the only successful group buy here for a DIY project (for CNC phono).

Hope you will reach your Hundred Group Buys for us :)

Do post pics of the parts and PCBs, for the benefit of those
of us who are contributing with our envy quotient.

Your chassis and faceplate for the B1 is looking good. Look forward
to the completed pics very soon.
