As (pleasantly) shocking it may sound, but there is an online petition underway to request Panasonic to re-launch Technics SL1200/1210 series of turntables. It is believed that Panasonic is aware of the petition and following it closely.

Moreover, the petition reached (& surpassed) its target of 10,000 supporters; the target Panasonic requested. Let us see if Panasonic finally wakes up and packs the punch on the plasticky modern turntables!

Here is the link to the petition: https://www.change.org/petitions/panasonic-company-re-introduction-of-legendary-technics-turntables

Whether or not Panasonic decides to relaunch the 1200/1210 but surely it is yet another feather in the cap in the Technics tradition and a testimony to the quality and fidelity of one of the best turntables ever produced.:)

Thanks for pointing us to this petition - I just signed it too. And why not! I would love to be able to buy a brand new 1200.

If I were Panasonic, I would open a website to place and collect advance orders. Lets see how many of the petitioners put their money where their mouth (or mouse) is... :ohyeah:

Well!!

But, for what price? Any one knows the price of the last one sold by the company?

While it was still available with the official Indian importer Riviera, Lamington Road, Mumbai, a pair used to cost almost Rs 1,20,000. Not cheap. They sold only in pairs as DJs buy in pairs. In fact there used to be talks on this very forum of finding a partner to jointly import it.

But thinking about it seriously now, I don't think I will get around to buying one new if it becomes available. I guess I got carried away with the emotion of wanting one badly in the past. Fortunately, I am now past that phase.

I have signed up in support, what a magnificent turntable, perhaps one of the best, if not the best of all time

Buying one for myself, well, my TT world has taken a different direction, back to idlers. If the Garrard 401 and Lenco L75 don't work out to expectations, then I'll settle for the 1200.

750 USD in 2002:indifferent14: Maybe 1200 USD:D in 2014. Are our people ready to buy at this price?

I remember an article (can anyone point me to it? It was fun!). Said something like, however old you are, the best turntable is always the one you couldn't afford in your teens.... And you still can't afford it!

Dear Shafic,

Audiophiles, as we all know are spending a fortune to set up their systems. Another member posted in this thread that a pair of 1200s were priced at 1.1 lacs! There are buyers, but for sure, not too many who signed the petition would put in so much money for a turntable. Like for me, I would love to see the 1200 go on sale again, but frankly speaking, I will not/ cannot afford to spend such a sum of money on...well...a turntable.

However, one benefit for the buyers will be that the prices of the used 1200s doing rounds of second hand stuff market will surely come down. And for those who can afford to spend can have a brand new turntable from the factory:), a joy which was missing.

Naah... people will just talk about how much better the old ones were and prices will go up!

On the not-so-cynical side, I think that those who restore old equipment get a satisfaction and reward that can't be equalled by making a simple shop purchase.

Could be. If Panasonic decides to alter the original specs (which is most likely as if relaunched, it has to be a new model) then audiophiles may reject it completely. And then Panasonic may complain that there are no 'serious buyers' in the market for turntables:D

+1000 to it. The joy of restoration is something that a shop purchase cannot replicate. I started admiring my turntables much more, especially the Technics after I restored it in detail. After going through the process of a detailed restoration, when you are innate with the internals of the machine, you start appreciating every small function on the machine.

Hi all,

Little off the topic. Does anyone know where in Japan one can buy Technics SL1200 Turntable (refurbished or new old stock)?

Thanks
Venu

Will a japanese one be universal voltage or 100V 60h only? Changing frequency will reduce the accuracy of the motor I believe.
