Hello friends,

I am here to seek your valued reviews on a home theatre system that I am willing to buy. My budget is between Rs 35,000-45,000. I have a 43 inch Samsung Plasma 3D TV (PS43D490). My room specifications are 10x11 with the TV at a viewing distance of 10 feet. There is a wooden bed and cupboard in the room as furniture (just in case it makes a difference). I have short-listed a few systems according to my brains. However I would certainly welcome any other options within my budget. My music/movies priority is 35/65. Listed below are the packages and their price estimates:

1. Sony HT-DDW5500 (Rs 44,990)
HT-DDW5500 : Home Theatre Component System : Home Theatre System : Sony India

2. LG AR805TS (Rs 34,990)
LG AR805TS Home Theater System - 800 W RMS DVD Home theatre with Bass Booster,MP3 upscaling. - LG Electronics IN

3. JBL Cinesystem 300 (Rs 39,990)
JBL CINESYSTEM 300

4. JBL Cinestyle 9 (Rs 44,990)
JBL CINESTYLE 9

I would really appreciate a quick response so that I can go ahead with the purchase as soon as it can get. Pleas help..!!

Thank you.

considering your budget range, you can also include Onkyo 3400 and yamaha YHT 296/395. You can some audition from Vector systems, near brigade towers, bangalore. cell: 9341717966. but if you like Sony go for it. you may strike out LG.

My take on this.

Since you have mentioned set-ups at the range of Re 45K therefore I assume you will spend that much on any other set-up as well.
Go for a Onkyo basic AVR may be Onkyo TX SR309. For movies Onkyo is good, it will certainly play decent music. There is no budget AVR in the market which does both qually good, including the ones that come as a package. You should get it for Re 20K. You may also want to look at Denon 1311 (more for music) at Re 19-20K.
Get tower speakers (Yamaha NS 8390 - 13K, Morduant Short Carnival 6 - 14K or Wharfedale atlantic GE400 18K). Another Re 10k (you will get entry level Wharfedale surrounds and centre in this range) on surround speakers would be more than enough for your room size without a sub woofer. If you do not move your set-up out to a bigger place, then you may also want to go for good book shelfs starting at Re 12K (Wharfedales are good in this segment). Go for towers only if you think you will move to a bigger place in future otherwise BS is the way to go.

Even without a sub this set-up (with towers) will sound way better than any of the packages you have mentioned above. Later when your pocket is replenished, you can get a decent sub and your complete set-up would be there to love and last for another decade. In future, you can upgrade to good speakers once you are bugged with these satelites (that come with the package), but that will cost another hole in your pocket, for the second time.

I personally feel, the packages mentioned above are there for people who prefer plug and play, without getting into any sort of complexity. Though the Harman Kardon package (Cinestyle 9) is good in terms of quality, but the output is low (only 50w per channel) compared to the suggestion I made above (which will give you at least 500w over 5 channels @ 6ohms), without the sub woofer. LG can be straight away neglected. Sony is good in terms of the package it offers but the sound quality would definately lack compared to Onkyo/Yamaha/Denon/Marantz/Harman Kardon etc.

Think, discuss and most importantly audition a lot before you spend your hard earned money!

Best of luck!

In your budget you can go for Onkyo 3400 but if you could raise your budget to 50k then you can go for Onkyo 5300.

I completely agree with this. One more suggestion that I'm planning. On ebay,
AVR RX-V371 & with speaker set NS-P440 with 1 Year Warranty, we'r getting for 24,999. So you'r getting good AVR RX-371 with speakers which already have surround speakers and sub-woofer. So just replace front speakers with tower spears. Overall ur spending max 40K. Let me know you thought on this. Will this surround speakers and sub woofer will match with tower speakers.

for AVR you cant beat Marantz, Denon or Onkyo............DENON is my personal choice for movies and music. For speakers Mordaunt Short, Wharfedale, Polk Audio, Tannoy, etc..... would be better than Yamaha or JBL.

Hello pupupuchi28,
Thanks for the knowledge shared by you. I honestly appreciate it. I live in Bangalore and have similar requirement. I consider myself more in the category of audiophile, but all this while I was more inclined to listening to music thru headiness/earphones. I have little knowledge when it comes to making a home theater.

My budget is also around 45-50k and like others here, I was also inclined towards buying the Sony HT-M5. But your suggestion above made me think. My usage of home theater will be slightly more for moves than music (say 60-40). Could you please tell me which AVR to go with? Also I am interested in buying the speakers suggested by you in your post, it would be great if you could suggest me where to get them from in Bangalore. Thanks in advance. Awaiting your reply.

Regards,
Sachin

Hello Prosenjit,

Thanks for your input.
Update from me is I bought the speakers today!!! I am very excited and happy with my purchase because one of my friends who is moving out of the country was generous enough to sell me his Mirage OS3 speaker set @ a heavy discount! These speakers have hardly been used as most of the time he's out of the country. And these are around a year or just short of a year, I am not sure.

Well, the speaker set includes 2 OS3 towers(floor-standing), 2 OS3 satellites, 1 OS3 center and a huge 10 inch Mirage Prestige S10 sub !

Now that I have an excellent set of speakers(in my opinion that is... experts please comment), could the experts here please advise as to which receiver I can pair these with? I have seen the Yamaha 3064 for 20k in Reliance digital which I have come to like. I have already spent more than my 50K budget for the speakers...it would be great if you can suggest a good AVR in the 20-25k range.

difficult in 20k range....the avr should be powerfull enough to drive the speakers.....
you can try used route.....

for demo, carry the centre channel....and try with different avr...
