My journey for the 5.1
Hi everyone,
It's been a hectic few days, but I wanted to share an update from my side that's fallen into place over the last week or so.
After approx half a year of thinking about it, and a couple of months of doing a bunch of research online (150+ articles read) as well as offline (traveling to and listening to different gear setups), finally decided to take the plunge and go in for my 5.1 setup. I know there are many people here who vouch the ideal process to be a progressive one - start with an AVR and FS+C, then Surround, then Sub - spending months/years going from a 2.0 setup to a 5.1, but somehow the old school approach in my head was keen on doing a 5.1 on day one, and not wanting to drag this out for too long.
I had initially set out with a budget of 1.5 lakh, and till the last couple of days, my shortlist read something like this-
AVR - Denon X1200W
Floorstanders - Dali Zensor 5
Center - Dali Zensor Vokal
Surround - Wharfedale Diamond DFS
Subwoofer - Polk Pro 660wi
MRP = 1.95L, offer price in hand = 1.63L, approx discount = 16.5%
However, I had only heard the Zensor 7s in demo (and not heard the Zensor 5s), and was a bit skeptical about going in for a smaller FS set, especially since the room size in consideration was an 18x18 living room that extended into a 10x12 living room. Hence, decided to upgrade to the Zensor 7s.
New MRP = 2.11L, new offer price = 1.72L, approx discount = 18.5%
I was also realizing that as luck would've had it, I'd also not had the opportunity to listen to the X1200W in action, and had only heard the Denon X2200W or other non-Denons. I also remembered reading a post where an FM had said that the X2200W sounds richer and fuller than the X1200W (and that it wasn't necessarily just a difference in wattage/volume between the two models). I didn't want to go in blind for the X1200W only to find it to be underpowered/lacking in some way, so decided to upgrade the X1200W to X2200W.
New MRP = 2.31L, new offer price = 1.85L, approx discount = 19.9%
I was feeling pretty happy, and decided to close the offer.
Only to realize that the Polk sub that I had in mind, with the offer price I'd been promised by an alternative dealer, was now -
1 - not being found in the market by this dealer from whom I was buying the core AVR + 5.0 setup, and
2 - the alternative dealer was now refusing to give me the Polk sub at the +20% discount he'd quoted, and said he could only do 5-10% max
Back to square one. I didn't want to go in for a 10" sub, and apart from Polk, I hadn't found any sub that went down to 20Hz in my research that was limited to Elac, Pioneer, Klipsch and Tannoy. The dealer asked me to consider Velodyne, and although I'd heard good things about Velodyne, my research showed that the only 12" sub they had available was the Wi-Q, which cost a bunch more due to the wireless capabilities, which I hadn't intended on spending for.
All this while, the long Independence Day weekend was fast approaching and I knew that my weekends after that were going to become hectic, and then with no time to set things up, any long overdue plans of me hosting friends over was also going to start getting pushed out further and further.
Did a few additional back-of-the-envelope calculations, realized I'd be saving 2.5K on just the subwoofer wiring alone, and pushed for a deep discount on the sub.
At the end, this is what I finalized as the setup -
AVR - Denon X2200W
Floorstanders - Dali Zensor 7
Center - Dali Zensor Vokal
Surround - Wharfedale Diamond DFS
Subwoofer - Velodyne Wi-Q 12
MRP = 250K, offer price = 201K, approx discount = 19.6%
Over the long weekend, got the setup installed, got the TV shifted out of the bedroom, got it wall mounted, got the TataSky cable extended into the living room, and the smartest thing I did was get the router shifted out too.
Now, everything's in place -
- AVR, PS3, PS4 and laptop are all connected to the router using wired ethernet
- external hard drives connected to my laptop using USB hub
- PS3, PS4, Tatasky, laptop connected to my AVR using HDMI
- TV connected to my AVR using HDMI (ARC) plus Optical
- laptop connected to the projector using VGA
- projector screen set up on ceiling so as to be pulled down in front of the TV unit
I'm really glad I discovered
Audio Video Home Theatre and Hi-Fi Discussion Forum when I did, and would like to thank everyone here for building a thriving community that can help noobs like me come in and understand things better and get advice on how to join in on this journey in pursuit of better audio.
Also, a special shoutout to mash, sachin.shiva, basshead, efernand1, jags and others for their valuable inputs.
I'll be more than happy to help fellow FMs if they'd like to drop in to listen to how any of this equipment sounds like - I know how tough it is to find dealers who will demo exactly the models you want to listen to, and not anything else. Just DM me, and we can coordinate.

P.S. Even though I did overshoot my budget of 1.5L, I was okay doing that as I felt it was better to spend extra than to spend 1.5L-ish and feel that I'd shortchanged myself on some aspect, and I was pretty hopeful that the extra spend would pinch lesser as time went by. A week later, I know that I made the right call.
