Hi Audiophiles,

I am planning to order a very good Power Amp from USA through my friend. Suggest me the best Power Amp around 250wpc@ 8 Ohms. I auditioned Adcom at ProFx - 250 wpc. It sounds good. But, I dont have a chance to audition other amps to compare. My budget is Max. 1 Lac. ( Remember I am buying from USA). I will upgrade my KEF Q500 to a Higher power Floor Standing speakers as well to probably a Paradigm or a KEF Q900, whichever is good.

So, suggest me a good Power Amp pls.... :) ( 250 watts@8 Ohms ). I am gonna connect this Power Amp through the Pre-Out of my Denon AVR 3313.

As far as my knowledge goes all Emotiva amps are dual voltage. So voltage will not be an issue. What will be an issue is getting someone to carry the amp for you. The higher end models weigh over 80 pounds.

Get a pair of EMOTIVA XPA-1L. They weigh 20.5KG each with box. They provide 250 watts @ 8 ohm (0.1% THD), 500 watts @ 4 ohm (0.1% THD) and 35 watts @ 8 ohm; Class A operation.
Emotiva XPA-2 is also a good choice besides the XPA-1L and XPR-2.

Looks like OP has some nice friend who is willing to carry. Dont know if that nice friend knows the weight of such stuff ;)

Thanks guyzzz. Most of you are voting for Emotiva. That's a good thing.

Emotiva are better than Adcom ?

One more Qn. If I go for a say, Emotiva 7.1 channel, while my primary objective is for stereo, is it still better to go for a 7.1 or a 5.1 power amp ? One factor I could think of is, in future we can upgrade the surround speakers to match the power of this Amp and make all speakers powered up, right ?

Any other thoughts ?

Experts,

I'm seeing 3 channel amps . Two channels, I can understand is for stereo, the third one is for the sub ? When one would use the third channel ??? I'm being ignorant :(

I would say you go for a top end AVR instead of a power amp. See rishiguru's threads of top yamaha/ denon AVRs.

I have a Denon AVR 3313( This has Pre-Outs)-125wpc ....with KEF Q 500...... :(,.. Am I being greedy for more :(

try some top end avrs z9, z11, nad TOTL - these would cost you about 2L but would do justice with both movies and music. If you really want to go 2 channel way than get a good integrated and a good source like a DAC+transport.

Please remove Denon AVR from the chain if you want good stereo performance. Even adding a power amp to Denon AVR didn't give me full satisfaction for 2 channel stereo. Even the 'pure direct' mode was not so "pure" :).

However a separate stereo amp (integrated or pre-power combo) smokes Denon AVR for stereo performance any day.

I have gone through the same pain and I am going to use my Denon 2310 ONLY for movies with a good sub-woofer.

Oh noo....In that case, how can I bypass my Denon AVR for stereo listening? :(, How will the connection look like ... :(

Well, what I can suggest is, keep the existing FS for dedicated stereo amp and get yourself a pair of bookshelves / center channel speakers that can match your current center channel for movies and use them with your Denon. See for movies, what really matters is your center channel and sub woofer. The surrounds and front L-R are used only 20% or even less of the time You also know that the front L-R and surrounds are prominent only when some action takes outside of the screen and that's pretty rare in movies :).

What I am doing is, I am using the same speakers for front L, C, R for movies. I am getting 3 KEF Q600C for front LCR . Here I get the perfect timber match between the front speakers and I get a much better sound stage in the front for watching movies as all speakers are identical. Also I got the surrounds from the same brand and same version of drivers that are used for front LCR - KEF q800ds.

Just my 2 cents :).

May be you need to tweak the speaker settings in the AVR to get the best out of it....How long has it been since you owned Denon AVR 3313 ?

Agreed that the stereo amplifier will perform better than a AVR..Since it was designed to handle only 2 channels...

BTW what was your source for judging that Stereo performance is not good on your AVR ?

Elango,

Thanks for asking me to justify. :)

I auditioned both the settings -
a. with the AVR
b. with an Adcom Power Amp

I could notice so much of clarity and musicality when played through the Power Amp. That's what is making me go for a Power Amp.

Any inputs based on this ??

Well,

I tried the following sources with my Denon 2310 AVR and KEF iQ7

1. Project Debut TT
2. Oppo 93 BDP. Tried the DAC in Denon and also DAC in Oppo. Similar results.
3. WD TV Live (for Flacs and WAV files) - HDMI to Denon and used DACs in Denon.

In all the cases AVR was set to 'Pure Direct' mode. But the results were pretty disappointing. I tried many things, changing speaker cables, costly ICs. Nothing helped. Then I tried pairing my Acoustic Portrait NJ1 power amp with Denon and just used the DAC and Pre amp stage in Denon. It was better, but not the best. Then I removed Denon completely and tried a budget tube pre amp with Acoustic Portrait NJ1. VOILA... I started to hear what I wanted from a stereo playback. Well not music nirvana though but tremendously superior to Denon in terms of great resolution, lush vocals and mids and good high end punch. I still don't get the right low end punch as my KEFs are slightly bass shy. But I think I can live with this new setup for some time :).

I am not saying Denon is bad. Its kick ass for movies. I am not letting my Denon go. Will use it for my 7.1 setup.

Disclaimer : This is just my experience :).
