Hi,

Here is my problem and possible solutions. Please suggest if my understanding is wrong or you have a better one.

I have a vintage technics amplifier that doesn't have a pre out. It only have tape out and a headphone jack. I want to use the Technics as a pre amp to connect it to a power amp.

Option 1: Use a speaker level to low level converter. https://www.crutchfield.com/S-FyX3a...-1-2-Speaker-level-to-Line-level-Adapter.html
There are other cheeper ones but are made for car stereos.

Option 2: Use the headphone jack. Is this advisable.

Thanks.

What is the input sensitivity of the Power amp? If it's around 1volt or so, all you need is to connect a stereo volume control to it's input ! It will need to be mounted on something with a couple of pairs of RCA sockets on the mounting plate so that you can connect it to anything easily.
Should sound better than the output from a dated amp. The headphone output is usually nothing but the speaker output with dividing resistors.
If the other amp is not very good you will probably get a lot of hiss too which would be the old amp's noise floor.
Generally speaking it isn't a good idea to take a power amp's output as a preamp signal. It will be a compromised signal.

Most modern day power amps will play directly off a DAC which is inside most disc players. They output typically 1 to 2 Volts at 0dB level. So the power amp might not require a " preamplifier " with gain.

If you look at the circuit diagram of the old amp you should be able to figure out where the power section gets it's signal, usually at the slider of the volume control. You could disconnect the internal power section and take the output from the volume slider in which case you have a regular preamp !

Tape out will not be via volume control so it will output the full signal strength. The converter in your Option 1 needs to have some sort of volume control built in, or you have to add a volume control somewhere in the chain. Otherwise it will play at full volume and that's not safe or desirable.

Headphone output will not have enough amplitude to drive the downstream equipment.

Thanks for the info. Will check and see

Well while any thing is possible, such uncontrolled connections are risky. One accidental turn of volume control can cause a lot of damage. In my opinion you should get a preamp if you require a pre amp. Will assure good quality of sound as well as overall quality of your chain.

Actually I am on a very tight budget and want to use my integrated amplifier for the high frequency and a more powerful one for the low frequency

That will require separate crossover designed specifically for that particular high frequency driver and low frequency driver. Isn't it ?

Which Model is this Technics ?
Regards.

That looks good amplifier. How are you going to connect HF and LF speakers separately ? That looks interesting.

In the past I was planning to add passive DIY subwoofer to my amp which has two stereo speaker out.
Regards

I plan to do something like dhreej has done using the crown power amp. Technics for the HF and crown for the LF
