Preparing for a 9.1 setup.. Worth it ? Your thoughts please...

2 Channel stereo using advance TL speakers played with my tube amp for movies too. This gives me more imaging, sound transparency. I have kept my Denon AVR in the loft and now am not using them for almost 2 years. It now has only antique value for me.

Great... To each, his own.. Are your movies files are in stereo too ?

My brother used to watch movies on his NAD C326 + WD Media player + Mission M35i FS + Sonodyne studio series sub SLF 200 in a 2.1 setup...It wasn't a convincing movie experience.. So suggested him to change set-up, which he is slowly building now..

Considering what audyseey does with time delay, is it necessary to have the surround back or Front heights as per the desired location ? for e.g., even if we keep the surround back near to listening position (in same row as side surround), won't the audyssey will do the necessary settings to keep the setup as it should be without having to move the speakers as per dolby/thx/dts recommendation ?

Front heights location is straight forward...

But for fronts, surrounds, surround backs there is no fixed location & they can deviate lil around 20 - 30 degrees.. Surround back is tricky when you don't have the back wall...

Yes Audyssey should set the delay for the surround back channels, but if the speakers are not optimally placed, you may not be able to get the desired effects...

I remember reading somewhere in this forum where someone tried the Front heights on top of the listening position (like atmos) and got favourable results.

I am wondering if I place the BS on top of the rack position (not in ceiling) just behind the listening position and try DPLIIz, what will be the effects are ! I admit i won't get the atmos effect, but will it have a desirable effect if not worse.

may be need to test it !!

Am not very sure if that would work... But if juz going to place it on rack, then you should try it....

I hooked up front heights on top of the rack behind the listening position. Watched Mission Impossible (Part 2). It was decoded only in Dolby Digital and the movie watching experience was good overall. I did not find the front heights at the back of the listening position a distraction and I had a overall immersive home cinema watching experience. I used DSX mode for the watch and I will continue to use this mode for upcoming bluray's as well.

Overall the experiment didn't go horrible and I feel I can continue with this setup for few months for now.

Great... Hooking up the front heights in the right place will yield you even better results...

Brother Elangoas

Thank you so much for pushing in to try a 7.1

This morning as soon as I woke up I brought my Q Acostic 2020i from stereo setup connected to my 5.1, ran Audessey Multi EQ, some manual tweaks.. played an Airtel recorded Movie "Kung Fu Panda", mode to Neo X heights and BOOM... what a sound stage!!

This is a sea difference in the overall experience

Sound is so elevated and room filling now

I shall do some more experiments this weekend

Great.... DTS Neo X is a great surround format... Try movies with HD Master audio, it should be even better :ohyeah:

I have tried Front height placement. I didnt like much, as height ate couple of frequencies from my front and surround speakers. I feel that little annoying specifically listen bollywood songs from bluray movies.

For Hollywood moves, frankly I enjoyed> actually blown away with effects.

Summary is that, if you listen audio songs or bollywood moves, do not setup height turn the amp decoding off least.
If you are hollywood movie lover, please get the setup asap.

the negative about DSX that I could find after reading expert views are that it reduces almost 3db of surround to give the front heights the effect it requires. And also if you happen to watch closely, the sounds that are coming front heights is more or less the same that is also heard on the fronts. Hence it's DTS NEOX followed by Dolby PIIz are mostly common used for front heights effects.

I heavily watch Movies on Airtel DTH and obvioulsy the base incoming signal is all screwed up. Besides Zee Studio none channel even give an option to upmix to DTS NEO X

Something not quite right there. That should be a function of the AVR and not the cable signal.

From SR6009 manual which I assume you have:
DTS Neo:X This matrix decoding technology uses the DTS Neo:X decoder to playback 2-channel source or 5.1/6.1-channel surround
sources as a maximum of 7.1-channel surround sound

I have confirmed this with my Pioneer LX57.
