raspberry pi 2 as media player

Guys i need a media player to play files on my HTIB setup. Can Raspberry pi be setup as a media player?? All i need to play are downloaded movie videos of dts sound quality.
Can raspberry handle 1080p files (with 6 channel sound) smoothly??
All files will be stored locally on my hard drive which i want to connect to raspberry.

If not raspbery, what else would be a good solution to have a Media player which can directly take my hard disk as input???

Krunal ... if you can handle Unix commands and take help from Google articles to configure ... then RPi is good. It is not so user friendly if you are not Unix friendly.

Setting Rpi with openELEC to act as media player has nothing to do with Unix/Linux commands and is pretty easy to set up

Krunal ... I wrote my comment as I assumed that you will do something extra on top of Media Playback

If you just want to play media from USB HDD ... Western Digital and Asus O play are also very good options

You can also look at Sony S1200/1500 ... these can play Blue Ray drives as well ...

OKay, I tried installing and running Archphile but did not succeed

Even to activate ethernet some modifications have to be done.
The steps are explained in good detail on the main website, still was little wary of attempting it

Moode is working absolutely fine. I even downclocked the cpu and the ram. Also have kept buffer settings to the minimum.

Only issue I face with Moode is that sometimes after doing a reboot which is necessary after changing some settings, it just refuses to start

Then i have to re write the whole OS again on the SD card. That only means that data on the SD card is getting corrupted. Not sure how to avoid it or this is inherited issue with RPI.

This is the only negative point I have experienced while using Raspberry PI as media player but I feel its a major issue

Its not possible to rewrite the whole OS every few weeks

I was able to make work Archphile just fine, but the extra effort was not worth, since the sound quality was more of less same. That's what I told you. Anyway. About MOode getting stuck, which SD card r u using??

Sandisk class 10 32 gb card

^^ Looks good enough ... I use Kingston Class10 SDHC 16GB, and never had a problem of getting stuck. Yes there was this one time when in the library mode it got stuck coz my lib is huge, but a simple reboot solved it....

As far as the stability goes I think I compared, Volumio was the best I never has any crashing or any other issue with it ..... But volumio has too many less features ...

One quick question when we connect pi -> router-> laptop thru WiFi dongle (using samba on OSMC)
Does it consume broadband connection bandwidth? I have slow bsnl connection and its very difficult to watch streaming video and I am facing the same issue with streaming audio from laoptop to pi(running OSMC)
Plz suggest

Anything streaming within your local lan (wifi) does not consume any broadband bandwidth. Any streaming from internet or even any cloud account will consume your broadband bandwidth ......

Slowness in streaming under local lan can be due to various facts, usually its the poor LAN infra that is the cause ....

I thought I will post an update. I was using RuneAudio and have faced this peculiar problem of the settings of the Wifi card getting erased. The IP adds was configured as static, it is very frustrating. On Wired LAN it functions beautifully.

Now have shifted to Moode and find it to be very steady without the above mentioned problem. As a plus point sound quality also feels better to my ears.

Try Rune v 0.2 that was better I suppose. Nevertheless, I am also going to shift to Moode so if you like it better stay on it. I am targetting this weekend for trying out moode will keep this thread posted.

Plex has introduced a new media player (PMP) based on mpv player (mpv.io). It no longer shares any code with Kodi. Currently available for plexpass users

There is a version for RPI2 with a bootable linux SD card Image

I tried out moode. I would say definitely Sound is better than the Rune v 0.3 beta. UI is almost similar to that of Rune because they come from the same parent project most likely. However in my opinion the reason why moode sounds sweeter is because at some point it clips out the dynamics of higher pitched notes in some cases which otherwise may make the sound a bit harsh. For people who like music to be bright may not like this. But definitely not me :) I liked it.

Has anyone managed to successfully use RPI 2B as a HTPC? I download movies to my HDD which is connected to a router (N66) and currently use WDTV to play them over the home network. I am wondering if RPI would be a good investment to run Kodi. WDTV does not have a lot of flexibility out of the box and the firmware isn't going to be upgraded anymore. Even YT playing is buggy and prone to restarts at times (on the old firmware). For local content, WDTV really works well but Kodi brings it's own advantages.

Was wondering whether to invest 3-4K in RPI2. Wanted to get Roku2 but it's not very good for local streaming (without PC).
