raspberry pi 2 as media player

Okay so now its been a year for my pi2 based htpc, running xbian for kodi and transmission. Anyway I can run kodi plus volumio/moode on same sd card?
Is the sq of these players much better than the stock audio player in kodi since people prefer these so much?I use airplay streaming for spotify on my phone to kodi and rest times play music off my hdd mounted on the pi. Its ok nothing earthshaking though.
Also is a dac like hifi berry or i2s really going to create wonders if i add it between the pi and the avr? Right now its pi hdmi to avr and no dac.

Moode runs on Raspbian and you can install other programs like MinimServer on it instead of direct Raspbian. It will depend on two things... 1) the program needs to run on Raspbian and 2) there is a package you can install instead of having to d/l the entire image. Anything meeting this criteria can be installed on Raspbian or Moode (since Moode is also installed on Raspbian).

An external DAC will always improve SQ. Yes, HiFiBerry will improve SQ, but if you can spend a little more and go for a Schiit or SMSL DAC, the benefits will be even more pronounced.

Well cant spend more than that so hifiberry will be in the wish list.
By the way if i use raspbian and run kodi and moode on it will the performance not fall down comparatively with standalone builds lile osmc or xbian? Will hdmi cec still work? I am reluctant to even use kore on my cell and prefer the tv remote, keyboard etc are strict nono for me

Instead of making a new thread might as well keep Rasp Pi issues here. I have some SACD iso (s). Would anyone know how I could play these? The CA CXR200 manual clearly mentions DSD can be played only through HDMI, so I have the option of playing them on Mac OS with Audirvana but would like to keep music at one place so was wondering how I could do that on Raspbian Jessie (With Kodi or Moode)?

it should ...... Moode Audio Player for Raspberry Pi - Page 2

Post no 45.

I can confirm that MoOde is able to play HiRes files.
I have a Pi2 connected to my USB Dac and have no issues (no buffering, no dropouts) - even playing DXD and dsf files works like a charm.

If for some reason it isnt, try this, download jriver and then play the DSF on jriver and push the music over UPnP to Moode Rpi .... should work.

I have played audio using moode and Openelec (Kodi), I don't find noticeable difference. Is I am missing something? Are you noticed any difference?

I realise that Moode is capable but it does not even seem to load the DSF songs. Its an Elton John album and I cannot find it on moode.local/. Does it have anything to do with DSD over PCM (DoP) feature? I have clicked that as a yes

I am using Audirvana Plus on Mac OS, but I don't think it has a DLNA or UPnP feature. I'll try JRiver if I can get hold of it for free. But How do you push music from UPnP or DLNA to Pi? I now have all music connected to Pi with Minim and Moode loaded on it, which in turn throws music to my Cambridge Audio Connect DLNA app.

Moode also works as UPnP renderer (player in layman terms) so you can use Moode to play music from any device using UPnP. Infact this is how I use moode, not the way most people do (playing/selecting song directly from within moode interface connected to HDD or NAS). I dont do that. I push music from my laptop/tab/mobile (NAS, Spotify, Pandora, Gaana.com ..etc) to moode using UPnP. jriver is not free, but demo/shareware is available which you can download (pirated is also floating online, if you wanna take that route .. :)) ...... Anyway Jriver will show Moode as the renderer and you have to specifically tell jriver not to transcode or downsample DSD and play in its native format (google for this), then choose moode as the renderer and it should all work ......:)

So I put up JRiver and I have an interesting finding but that later. How do you use Moode as a renderer? I mean right now, an HDD is connected to RasPi 2 with Moode; my Cambridge Connect App picks it up and then I push the songs further to my AVR. Even on JRiver interface, it picks up my AVR through DLNA and all I have to do is select it and the songs play on that. How does one send songs to Moode? And even when you do how will Moode send songs to my AVR? I don't have a DAC in between, so it'll have to send it wirelessly to my AVR. So little confusion there.

On the interesting bit of discovery; till now whenever I have played music through HDMI, its been suppressed and dull not quite there. However, I played music from JRiver both wirelessly as well as through HDMI and the result was pretty different. While wirelessly it played as it has been through Raspberry Pi but through HDMI the sound became much louder than ever. In fact in its throw it was way ahead of playing it wirelessly. Qualitatively I have not had the time to judge, but my first impression was that the sound was much tighter and less warm than through wireless. Anyone know why this could be happening?

Yes you need to enable DLNA server in jriver only then Moode will show up.

Go to Tools->Options->Media Network ........ and select "Use media network to share this library."

click next next ok and finish. It will ask to note down a server key, just keep it save, it will not be used in this case anyway. Once you have done that you will see all your DLNA server available online including Moode. Then its just a matter of adding the library(using the key that was provided) and choosing moode to play the song. For reference I have added some screen shots

Below is how my jriver looks while Moode Playing a song ..

Thanks sam9s. I was already trying to do what you showed but on Mac OS it was not loading. A thick rainbow wheel. But works on WIndows side of my MacBook. Thanks again.

Though, where we started, .dsf I think will have to be played through HDMI, as my AVR will not through wireless.

You will if you play Moode through DLNA. Its much better.

In my case, HDD is connected to raspberry PI and use Mupeace Andriod app to play the Music. That means this app acts like a remote only right? In that case, I do not find much difference.

Do you want to tell me that moode player will work great when I am unable to connect music library directly to the PI player?

Even if you play music via UPnP Mupeace can still act as a decent remote .... I however use my notebook to play most of my music so have different ways of controlling it, depending on what is the source (NAS, Spotify, Gaana, Subsonic, Pandora, Google Music ... etc)

I was not able to play via UPnp using Mupeace. May be, I don't know how to use it. But using Bubble UPnp, I was able to play the music.

^^ U cant, you can only make it act as remote, thats what I said.

Can any one clarify my below doubt regarding Kodi addon Exodous please?

I use Rpi for watching video files stored in my external hard disk connected to RPI via USB port. No online streaming of videos. In such a scenario, do I have any use with Exodous? Since Exodous is such a higly rated add-on with great interface, would like to know if I can use it for my usage.

Nothing related between both. Exodous is an addon to search and view online media content loaded onto torrent servers, so basically its for online streaming (illegitimate so to speak, nothing official about it, mind you), this add on has nothing related to watching video files stored on your ext hdd drive ...
