Check out Anker, QuantumZERO, and Aukey on Amazon.

I'm using Anker and Aukey for over a year now without issues.

PS: If the Pi is stationary, which it probably is, better to buy powered drives (3.5") or a NAS box that lets you plug in multiple HDDs. Both will be cheaper than buying a proper NAS or the hassle of powering 2.5" drives.

1 final question,so the reason I'm buying this is because even though my Seagate slim hdd is set for spin down after 10 minutes in my distros via hd-idle,if I reboot or shutdown despite all my tries the Pi spins it up just immediately before shutdown like normal and then suddenly cuts power off leading to the abrupt parking which is audible...Its like something spinning abrubtly halted in the path and parking of the head is done abruptly which may affect hdd life i guess..I tried editing even the default shutdown scripts/reboot scripts and making my own scripts but owing to hardware it still happens.

If I use an external hub for a non powered hdd will it continue to spin even if the pi is shutdown or after the pi shutsdown it automatically stops spinning, parking the heads normally after being idle and if no read is done on the usb?The current sound will surely not happen as the hdd would no longer depend on the pi for power

Basically just asking (powered hdd owners can answer) if the read is not done for a powered drive and no pc/pi connected is the hdd inside still spinning? If some fm can answer I will order the Quantum zero right away..

Also thanks for the other options, but I don't think I need a NAS box to justify the price points vs benefit logic yet.

I found a spinning hdd + transcedant power hub + seagate hdd is creating a spinning noise at the hifiberry output.I have found streamed music is much better with d pi.

Apologies... missed this.

Not sure though... I just leave it at default by the manufacturer. I've both Seagate and WD external HDDs connected to the Pi and they pretty much function as is... with sleep settings as per manufacturer settings. One of them serves for music, that pretty much runs 24/7 I'd say. The other runs as a Samba share - sharing videos, media, movies, etc. and this powers down now and then when not in use... but pretty much out of my control.

I do use sleep settings for the PC and NAS as they do have these settings... but not sure where to begin with for the Pi.

I've even played around with the Pi as a torrentbox and initially set the d/l to an external HDD, but that kept it powered on all the time... then I moved the d/l to a USB pen drive and then moved the completed d/l to an external HDD... in this case the external HDD was powered on only when content was being moved to it and it was seeding. Once the seeding stopped it would power down... of course this setting as per manufacturer... so not sure how to set it... but power down it did when not in use.

Well that's a good idea,I will try this as I have already ordered a powered quantum zero hub, will first test out the settings tomorrow and try testing the usb pen drive to hdd option.
Finally will drop off the max usb current option atleast.

Hi RPi2 users ...

Facing some issue with Youtube App ... getting erros like "MAx no. of searches exceeded" ... "login credentials incorrect" etc.

Has anyone else faced similar issue ? How did you resolve it ?

Tks

Done and dusted, set spin down to 10 min in seagate dashboard, connected via hub to the pi. Post shutdown, hdd spins down happily and no more knee jerk noises. While its on with the pi, hdidle spins it down after 10 minutes of inactivity. Also dropped the max usb current param and used the hub to power the pi as well saving an extra power adapter.

A new Raspberry Pi project, setting up a personal DNS server on the Raspberry Pi for the explicit purpose of blocking ads on the entire network.

https://pi-hole.net/

Extremely easy, won't take more than 10 minutes, though will need customization and blacklists for long-term effectiveness.

It's not as good as Ublock Origins, but parsing their lists for domains to block will make the Pi Hole extremely effective.

Give it a try, will make your wife and kids happy when it blocks all ads on the iPad and the Smart TV.

Thanks - I have a couple of spare Pis and I had been wondering what to do with them.
This one sounds like a go!
FWIW, this will be the 4th Pi in production at my pad :ohyeah:

I have installed the Moode audio in Pi3 . Now if I want to play you tube songs on the pi, as I do with online radio stations ..is there a way to stream the same.

YouTube is for video. Moode is for audio.

Sent from a handheld device. Some typos might creep in.

If you can grab the audio stream for the channel or video then yes you can add to MinimServer. I've a ton of custom stations added this way... even from BBC.

I don't use Moode, but I'm sure you can do the same.

where is you tube playing,??? is it on your PC/Laptop. ??? You cannot play youtube directly on pi with moode installed. You have to play it on your mobile or PC/Laptop and then stream the audio to pi running Moode via DLNA.

If you running you tube on PC/laptop, then, just download this awsome tiny app called Stream What You Hear, basically it will capture what ever is playing on your PC, be it application or on browser, it will stream to any UPnP. DLNA connected renderer, like Moode in this case.
I always have this (auto load and auto connect when windows starts) to my Moode renderer, so what ever I play on my laptop I get the out put from my audio engine A5+, rather than from those puny tiny laptop speakers ... :)

How to do it, well the instructions are on the website itself. If youtube is playing on mobile and then you want to stream audio to Moode, well that is a bit tricky, or shall I say not possible right out of the box.

I have only 2 Raspberry Pi's at home, but love them to bits.

Pi Hole works very well, and is especially useful since it blocks across the entire network for all connected devices. It blocks all the ads on my Google Nexus smartphone, something previously only done with an external app. It also blocks all the ads on the wife's iPad, especially for YouTube which gets consumed a lot at home. The ads blocked on the Samsung Smart TV also make using it so much better.

It also saves on bandwidth, as the ads don't get downloaded and then blocked as is typical with browser extensions.

Yes. I am already able to use the youtube audio through airplay.
But , I am looking for an option like OSMC + yatse , where you can que a video youtube app (just share it) on the yatse que manager. Wanted something like that through an MPD application that can que the audio to moode audio. This functionality is supposed to be there in Mupeace , but does't work cleanly.

You can't do that with Moode, for this kind of functionality, chromecast is the only best option as far as I can tell.
