Samsung 64D8000

my screen is peeling! i would say stay away from this unit - talking to samsung about returning or replacing the unit.

Wow, that means 51D550 should be a more successful model. Atleast I can't bear such issue if it happen even if I get the TV for 1.5Lac with free goodies.

Let us know the outcome if replacement helps. Also, insist in getting the remote as documented in the site if you choose to keep the TV!

People from Samsung had come to my house yesterday to set up this TV. When they attached the TV to the stand provided by Samsung in the box it looked like it would topple over any time.
They decided it was not safe and the TV needs to go either on the wall or to get a TV stand with a floor mount. There is a window right behind the place where i want to place the TV so wall mount is not possible  . Does anyone know where i could get a floor mount TV stand for a 64" TV ?

Try local furniture stores. @home The Mega Home Store

well they have promised to give me a qwerty remote, unfortunately no touch remote.

as far as a replacement unit, i do not think i will want that as this unit was june manufactured and has the same problem as US units, even with replacements customers in the US claim the peeling persists.

i am now contemplating an 60LGPZ550. anyone has other recommendations?

A shame really. Such a beautiful set. I hope they sort out the problem in their next model.

i have owned many samsung tvs, never been a problem before. this set has been highly frustrating. first a wifi issue (would not connect), then a hdd issue (it would start caching old files) and now peeling, which is the most inexcusible. samsung defines it as a 'minor defect'. i don't know what is minor about a 2lakh set with a peeling edge!

Completely agree with you. I am concerned about HDD caching issue. May exist in other models as the media player features should be same across the 2011 model. Can someone else comment on this?

Well, At least Surrealistix's set is not peeling. I think with the 64D8000 being so thin, the heat generated has no outlet from the back & the screen becomes really hot messing with the Real Black Filter leading to peeling issues.
This seems to be a fundamental physical heat sinking/heat dissipation design flaw and won't be sorted out unless they increase the entire thickness of the bezel allowing for better heat dissipation.
All reviews of LG Plasmas have said that they have very poor black levels
This is a year to STAY AWAY from any TV purchases as overall quality of sets has gone down
Other companies have probelms too
Panasonic : - Fluctuating Brightness / 50 Hz Motion issues
Brigtness pops, non-stabe black levels
LG : - Poor Black levels
Samsung :- Screen Peeling, Brightness Pops, Non defeatable auto-dimming :sad::sad:

What set does one buy in the 60 inch plus category?

Well, try with another 64d8000 replacement. If it does not peal (depending on your luck), it is by far the best set this year.

The other option would be 65VT30 from Panasonic. Should be released in a month or two at most in India. But this would be pretty expensive and may not give you value for money
It beats the Samsung on Black levels only but on other criteria, Samsung scores much better. Light output from the Panny is also less and it would be a much duller & dimmer set as compared to Samsung sets

I'm in the same situation too... Looking for a 60 plus Plasma but quality issues are worrying me

Samsung 60D8000 LED launched now at a WHOPPING price of Rs.4Lac. Any takers? :)

no more samsung. their attitude sucks too, right from the dealer to customer service. it's been a struggle to get them to listen. i'm thinking of buying an LG 60PZ550 as a stand by, it's relatively cheap (1.02L) and then wait for a better set.

prankey, the price is not the problem, as hopefully most of us will be able to upgrade our sets in the coming years, but if you do pay a tidy sum you do expect some kind of service! samsung does NOT want to replace they only want to refund for this set, and it has been a week since they've been 'processing' it. sad because news articles state samsung's tv sales have fallen drastically. i don't understand the 4L price since the 65C8000 is going for under 3.0 now. The D series can't be that radically different, and it is smaller!

syiqbal - get the LG, and wait for a HQ set to come by. maybe in 6 months we'll have an apple tv to drool over! oh, and google will be coming out with their third iteration built into most sets soon too :)

why would you say no for LG? the problem with panasonic is the price - i'm getting a sharp 60 inch LED for 2.40, LG 60 inch plasma for 1.02. The problem with a Panasonic plasma is the price - 65 inch VT30 for 3.5L. That is way too high for a plasma! My budget is 2L or around that. If I go for LG, I can wait for 6 months and buy another (superior) TV.

None of the LG plasmas are in the same league of VT30 , so no comparison there. You can think of other panny models as ST or GT series. LG panels are very reflective. I was quoted 1.6 for a 52 inch sharp 3d led over phone and offered some discount too. 60 inch should definitely come less than 2L. Bargain hard. I do agree the prices for Panny plasmas are unreal. But just wait for some time they will drop like V20 series. V20 @ launch was sold around 70k for 42 inch and 110k for 50 , now the same are available for 50 and 85k prices. Always the new models with hifi stuff will be priced a bit high. Give it six months time , the prices definitely fall. For the kind of money you are spending , you can go to Japan and buy a sharp 60incher and comeback with lot of freebies .... :)

right now panasonic only has the vt series in over 60 inches! don't know when the GT or ST or even V series will launch in 65 inches.

I'm not comparing VT to LG, just saying that I can buy 3 60 inchers and have money left over. Ideally would have loved the samsung D8000 to work out but I'm not going to risk holding on to the unit with the top right corner peeling off!

does anyone out there have experience with a 60PZ550? A friend has it and is quite happy so far!

+1

I completely agree with you. Thats why I am after 51D550 only as its the best value for money TV for now. 60PZ550 should also be another one especially if you are particular about 60" size. All models and manufacturers have one or other shortcoming. Even when we compare 65VT30 with 51D550, 51D550 might perform better in terms of 3D, Picture processing, looks, USB support, expansion features, etc. So best is to choose the budget, size and features and go for it.

My strategy is also to go with the cheapest upgrade and wait for better upgrades. Infact if I get a decent 40" second hand LCD, I may sell my 32" and go for it instead of even going for 51D550 for its 3D and Plasma picture performance.
