Hi,
Wanted to buy the Sony BDP S380,but seems to be out of stock in most retail stores. Reliance Digital guy mentioned that S380 has been replaced by Sony BDP S190 which has the same capabilities but sleeker and better h/w.

Is this true ? How does the Sony BDP S190 compare against Sony BDP S380 ?

Thanks
Linny

he blatantly lied to you:D....380 is a higher model.
380 can bitsream 190 cannot...also more differences...
as 380 is really out of stonck
anyway can go for more higher model 490 at 9k in ezononmline....its 13k in reatil shops...

or a much better player panasonic 220 in infibeam at 12k...........as it can be made region free...

I have the Sony 490 and i can tell you that it does a decent job. 190 is a very basic model that is good value for money but is definitely not a replacement for 380. God knows why these salesman aren't educated!

Thanks a lot for the recommendation. Based on budget constraints, I am inclined towards Sony bdp-490.

I tried to check out reviews of Sony bdp-490 but there hardly any. A general google search threw up mainly Indian shopping websites and few UK ones. Whereas 380 has lots of reviews.

So is this model introduced basically Indian, UK users ?

An important question, since 490 is a higher model than the 380, can I safely assume that it at least inherits, if not surpasses, the upscaling qualities of the 380 model with extra features ?
I have a lot of DVDs and xvid DVD rips and hence the worry.

Thanks
Linny

I am looking to buy Sony BDP S380.Does this support 1TB external hard disk. Because i heard Sony BDP S190 supports only 500GB hard disk.

I would strongly recommend the Panasonic BDT220. Check out the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Review.

FM Josh! purchased it for Rs. 11,000 in Pune. By spending another Rs. 2500 or so, it can be made region free too. It is 3D, wireless, great upscaler, plays 1TB HDD flawlessly, etc. I have nothing against Sony - in fact I own one. But Sony models are near impossible to make region free.

Agree with the recommendation. I have an old Sony BDP that's region locked for DVD and Blu Ray both and i have been unsuccessful in unlocking it.
Fortunately, the new BDP S490 is region free for DVDs. I haven't checked Blu Ray yet since all the ones i have are region free :).

Thanks all for the recommendation. The excellent review of Panasonic DMP-BDT220 made me change my decision.

BTW where can I buy the system in India ?
I'm in Bangalore and checked with most of the Electronic retail shops including the Panasonic Brand shops. None have the model

Can someone provide pointers for the same ?

I faced a similar problem in Mumbai, and choose to buy the S490 instead. Most of the shops have cheaper Blu Ray, and for some reason Pannny is not readily available. Frustrating!

Sony S190 can-
1.play files from 2 TB external HDD.
2.bitstream audio codecs.
3.do full decoding of dts hd master audio/dolby true hd from mkv file...unlike other players in same price range which are only capable of reading core part of the audio file.

lake your signature shows you have 190...really it can bitstream hd audio??its specs dont mention it....have you checked it with an avr??if yes then its very good for the price range
thanks for the help.

Yep I checked with avr..it's in another room..in bluray player it already has an option under audio settings to select bitstream output if you want it..

I have s380 and i dont think one should rely on sony for playing any kind of MKVs or even Xvid. Well it can play some, but not all. out of total collection of mine, 40% are being played. So i made up my mind and using it for only dvd/bd disc.

Even my old S370 can play all type of mkvs(upto profile 4.1)...and S190 handles full BD mkvs very well...not sure where u get this kind of infos that sony bdp can't play all mkvs..
