Sony BDP S190 vs Sony BDP S380

I have also done region free for DVD only with URC for my Sony S-490. It works perfectly. I think as per AVSforum, it works with S-190 as well.

I agree with Prosenjit, S-490 is a better choice than S-190 and is worth the extra amount.

Only thing lacking in sony bdp-s490 is its ability to read the sacd layer off an sacd, otherwise for the price quoted above its a good buy I think.
Previously, s380 too read sacd; now it is only limited to s590 and s790.

Are you sure? The specs are little diffrent for S490 in different region, like it can play VCDs in Indian version, whereas the international version lacks that feature, I think.

So far I thought only difference between S490 and S590 is the built-in wi-fi in S590.

Thanks for the replies.
I hv a PS3 which I use for playing the occasional blu ray but its not very easy to use without purchasing the optional remote & also has very strict read rules for the discs.that is why I wanted to go for an entry level multipurpose blu ray player which would read the majority of blu rays & upscale DVDs sufficiently.i had zeroed in on BDP S190 but I have read contrasting views about it being Cinavia protected & being impossible to make it region free even for DVDs due to this. Then I read about the Panasonic Blu ray players here which can be made region free for both blu rays & DVDs thru a software patch but the models DMP T 75/77 both surprisingly do not have any digital audio out(optical/coaxial) connection for multichannel Audio thru older AV receivers! i have an older av receiver which does not have an HDMI port.So can u guys please suggest me a model in the range of 6-8k which can me made multi region for DVDs at least

Go for Panasonic DMP-BDT220.

T220 is off the Indian shelves long time back. But still you can give it a try as one guy in the forum recently got one somewhere. Otherwise most of the people are importing the same from Amz-US, where the price dropped to as low as $80 till a fortnight ago, but now abnormally high around $120. BTW, the new range of BD players are expected soon from all leading OEMs including Pana.

Sonys BDP-S370 was one of the best budget Blu-ray players of last year, offering a number of snazzy features not always found on entry-level players, such as access to web content via Sonys brilliant BRAVIA Internet Video.
How much is Sony paying you?

About the S190:has anybody tried the dvd region free technique & will it be affected by subsequent firmware updates?
