Sony BDP S380 Officially Anounced.

Actually many BDPs are doing away with optical out. Manufacturers presume that you will use HDMI connectivity; so why increase cost by providing a feature that may not be used. For prev generation AVRs, the coax digital is provided. Manufacturers think that that should suffice.

I somehow doubt that pricing. The page shows the BDP-S380 features and there are many factual errors. I think the price will be probably close to BDP-S370.

The important question is whether this can be made region free for Blu-Ray. If not, even if it sells for 1000, it is useless.

Cheers

On this point, I agree. Most Sony BDPs are difficult to mod. In this case, it is pointless to buy in India.

Does it play mkv thru USB?

I have seen this question being asked a number of times, and frankly, the logic astounds me. A optical player cannot be expected to be a media player, and vice versa. If you want to play all forms of downloaded files, it makes more sense to go for a media player. Optical players that double up as media players - all of them, including the Oppos, have limitations.

Cheers

I have been playing lots of MKV files in my 370 and it plays without any problem so far , but with the 380 files larger than 4 GB can be played without splitting. You can directly connect your NTFS HDD and play MKVs.

I kind of agree with Steve Jobs (on his reason for not supporting blu-ray playback in macs) - playing/ getting optical media is too much hassle. Just buy a very good media player and download/ stream is the way to go.
