Sony ex-520 40" available

Hi, I checked out 40" EX520 at Sony Centre in Chembur, Mumbai. To be honest, I was not too impressed. The price diff between EX500 (59,900) and EX 520 (64,900) was only 5K. The salesman indicated that 520 is not a replacement of EX500 and it dosen't have 100hz refresh and hence the lower price diff. I asked him to switch from the std showroom BD display to Airtel HD. The cricket bradcast in HD was just decent, nothing to rave about. I asked him to switch to any non HD DTH channel. I saw few moments of 'Platoon' in Star Movies and it was simply painful. The set just couldn't handle SD broadcast. He tried to put forth that all HD channels would work well. He also indicated delivery within an hour. There is also an interest free 6 month installment scheme for HDFC card holders. After the experience, I am more inclined to Plasmas since most of my viewing would be SD.

You need to adjust the settings to make it look good, the showroom settings will look like crap usually set to vivid mode with all sorts of unwanted processing set to high.

The high backlight settings will aid in showing defects/artifacts/noise etc of the picture.

Salesperson asked me regarding my decision to buy this TV. When asked about the motion blur issue he gave me this statement. "Due to X-rality engine and 60 Hz refreshing, the images during fast action will be similar to or better that EX-710 which has 100 Hz motion technology". Has any one of our forum seen this TV? I ma yet to see one in show rooms. Thanks in advance

Thats pure bull by the saleperson.

X-reality has nothing to do with the 100hz motionflow.

I bought a EX520 and got installed yesterday. The picture quality is very good. I have a Big TV SD connection. I dont have any HD channels. Most of the channels like HBO, TLC, Discovery, Star Movies etc are very good. I dont know whether this is due to Big tv picture quality.

You can't judge picture quality by watching SD channels in showrooms. They will have only one dish connection from which it will be connected to multiple televisions. Thts the way all the showrooms work including Ezone from where i bought mine.
I am not sure abt the refresh rates. Watching football in ESPN didnt gave me any issues. Also watching cricket was fine.

I am considering the Sony 32" ex 520.
I will not be watching television.Only dvd's and Internet TV.
Will an unlimited 2 mbps broadband connection be sufficient for SD/HD You Tube videos?
Can you browse and use the ex 520 like a regular computer for surfing?
What is the price of the UWA-BR 100 adapter?
If I use a LAN cable for a direct connection to the USB port of ex 520 then would I still need to buy the adapter?
How effective is the remote control as a keyboard?
Is the Sony 32" ex 710 model also available?Price?
Will the free trade agreement with Japan immediately bring down prices in April?

I have 1 mbps connection. 2 mbps will be fine.

Typing using the remote is difficult. I read somewhere that there is some android app which can be installed in android mobiles so that the mobile can be used as keyboard.
If you have lan cable, then you can connect from Modem to lan port in the television. In that case, no need to buy USB adapter. I am also connecting using lan cable. No idea how much a USB adapter costs.

tkrishnan: Ex520 was connected to Airtel and was broadcasting cricket. on the EX500 there was some standard sony display stuff. So unable to compare the both for motion handling.

Shameer: congrats on ur purchase. I agree one can't judge SD on showrooms. In this showroom, the Airtel HD was connected exclusively to EX520 and hence I was disappointed on the same. Maybe the settings were incorrect.

Hmm..the resolution mentioned is WXGA, ie, 1280x768 (HD Ready)

The 420 has WXGA resolution.
The 520 had full HD1080(1920X1080) and a 60hz motion flow (no mention in the specs)?
The 710 has a 100hz motion flow (mentioned in the specs).
The Sony salesman said new models are expected in March/April.
Makes sense to wait until mid april to see if prices come down because of the free trade agreement.
In the meantime I have decided to focus on only Sony, only Edge LED,only 32".
Will wait for a model with 100hz motion flow at a sub 45K price point.
Hopefully with WiFi that does not require an adaptor.

Most of us seem to miss the point : the FTA will be implemented over a period of 10 years i.e. duty will be reduced in stages, so price will not fall dramatically. Also the items have to be Made in Japan: not just because it is a Japanese company.
For those who are in tearing hurry, it makes sense to wait for the 2011 models.

Today I had a detailed demo of EX520. I compared it with LG 42LE5500,EX-400,samsung c5000, LD460, Philips(don't rem number) and LG 4600.
1. Overall picture quality was same in LCD and LED. Sony Ex-400 producing the same image as that of EX-520. Samsung LCD/LD were also the same. LG LCD picture quality was not upto the mark. The overall sharpness was less.
2. LG LED was good and bright. It had the best viewing angle of all. Philips LCD was lacking in sharpness
3. Not at all impressed by EX520. Could not find any improvement based on X-reality. Shadowing(trailing of the cricket ball) was visible on closer inspection. The picture lost brightness once you are at an angle. Played "This is it" on blu-ray. You can see judder.
4. On comparison of LG5500 and EX520 side by side with the same signals, LG was the winner. It's motion technology clearly eliminates the judder seen on blu-ray. viewing off centre was much better. When I say off-center I don't mean that I go to the side of the TV and watch it from there,I would say 30-40 deg from centre line.
5. I should go ahead and buy LG? Huge mental block regarding LG. Then I found one TV which was equal in performance to LG5500 and 10000/- less. EX500!
Hoenstly could not see a 5% difference in picture quality from LCD to LED. Checked blu-ray, demo clips, and standard cable. No difference at all. Even some times EX 520 was less bright compared to EX-500 with equal back light setting.
This is my observation

The Edge LED on these entry level LED TVs will not make any difference in picture quality.
Unless you go for the full dynamic LED backlight, like in LG 46". They are good.

I bought myself CX520 (LCD) only couple of weeks back. The picture quality is awesome. No motion blur to my eyes. I am enjoying my blu-rays :-)
