Sony launches a new Blu-ray player at Rs. 9,999/-

There are limitation on playing video via usb since the aspect ratio is lost and files more than 4gb dont play.......purchased the player but in longer run the usb facility is of very limited use.............

Since this thread has been alive- can someone PM me- whats the latest BDP available that costs between 9K-15K, and doesnt have all these 'region coding' worries.

Advise will be sincerely appreciated.

2 questions bugging me:

1. What makes BDPs cost like 30-50K? Whats so different between them and the 10k Sony's available at Croma/eZone?
2. Where is a DAC used and why? All google did was give me physics/electronics lecture on digital to analog conversion. I need simple english explanation as to what a DAC does, and IF possible why some cost INR3000, and some USD9000? Damn!

Nothing, actually - if you want no region coding worries. :)

Build quality, some more features (like 3D, for instance). supposedly better quality parts, a more rugged BD transport - but this would depend on what player you have actually purchased. I don't have much faith in the slightly more expensive Denons, Onkyos and Yamahas but the CA and Oppo players should be fine. :)

A DAC simply takes your digital signal (the ones and zeros stored on any CD/DVD/BD) and converts it into analogue form (moving pictures/sound) so you can see/hear them on your TV or through your amp/speakers.

The implementation of the DAC and the associated electronics that go with it have a lot to do with quality. Suffusive to say, all DACs aren't created equally. That's why some cost Rs 3K whereas others cost US$9K.

What do we mean by an Universal BD player, does it means that it will play all region discs. This Sony player is very fast and responsive, comparing the samsung review. I am also planning to buy the same, But prices of Blurays will outrun the cost of the player in india, what do you guys suggest, will it be a remarkable difference with Bluray? i currently play mkv HD 720P movies which is awesome,Also whats True HD , will it be lot better than DTS, if yes then in what terms, i fairly can raise my receiver volume with DTS itself. I use onkyo base model receiver, Polk RTi A5 and a Klipsch sw 450 subwoofer.

Old thread - new questions.

1. Univesral BD Player is a player that can play BD movies, BD-Audio (if there exists one), DVD video, DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, etc. Basically is will support all official disc formats and maybe unofficial too such as MP3, DVix/XVid, etc. Universal does not mean "region free".

2. Prices of software (BD or DVD) will always outrun hardware (players). This is true not just for BDs. It is also true for computers as well. It is the universal truth if I am say so. (no pun intended).

3. There is a world of difference between 720p and 1080p. True HD is 1080p.

4. DTS, Dolby Digital, et al, is related to sound track. Blu-Ray discs feature the video in full (1080p) resolution and the soundtrack is usually either Dolby TruHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Both are lossless audio tracks and much better than the Dolby Digitial (DD), DTS, DD Ex 6.1 and DTS-ES 6.1. To enjoy Dolby TruHD or DTS-HD MA, you must connect the BDP to AVR via HDMI. Only HDMI (v1.3) has the bandwidth capability to deliver the lossless audio. And there is a wold of difference.

5. Finally, sound is not about raising the volume. It is not about good receivers and speakers. It is the input fidelity that matters.

Failed to play:

mpeg
mov
dat

Haven't had a real opportunity to test all features yet. But, overall looks good for that price :-)

For to add. If you are more into downloading torrents and rips, you are better off with a media player.

I suppose I spoke too soon! I checked the specs of the Onida player and they look good - especially for the price. This will tide me through until newer Sony models are released for these shores!

Now the problem: The model is unavailable at futurebazar. Anywhere else I can get this?

sony 370 is a good player but it only supports FAT 32 and not NTFS therefore you have to split files more than 4GB to play in the 370. Wiat for sony India to launch the 370successor,may be the 380 which supports NTFS.......there is no aspect ratio problem with the player as reported by me earlier.......

First of all, by pointing out the sins of another, one cannot absolve themselves of sin. Secondly and more importantly, you are confusing the issue of software piracy, with that of the entire 'intellectual property' rights laws. As a matter of fact, you are even confusing it with, 'patent' and 'trademark' laws. Your arguements, as genuine as they may be, have nothing to do with the 'software piracy' issue being discussed here. If I were to release pirated copies of a book you wrote, it would have nothing to do with our ancestors or that of the Europeans. Also, as stated by me earlier, the provisions governing the laws of piracy may be debatable, but the ethics and morality of piracy is not. Piracy in it's simplest form is nothing but stealing. The general Indian's apathy towards piracy and pirated goods, or for that matter even stolen physical goods, is nothing but a reflection of the corrupt and moral less society that we have become. A society where, Me & Mine is all that is left and You & Yours can take a hike.

Piracy/stealing are ethical & moral issues, which each one has to decide for themselves. Thus, arguing this, is pointless and almost impossible without getting personal and so better judgement suggests that we not continue this here. In any case, as far as I know, promoting of piracy is against the 'rules' of this forum and thus is not a subject open for debate here.

i was trying to find a decent BDP in the thread but came across all this. guys i work in the digital media business and have seen all this Piracy/theft talks thats going on.
if anyone needs any clarifications on both then pm me. i will sort out the points clearly.
