Friends,

I am an entry level audiophile with a very tight budget. My requirement is 75% Music & 25% Movie. I have:

1. Sony PS3
2. Samsung LCD
3. Dell XPS laptop
4. Airtel Digital TV (HD)

At present I am really really confused. I use iTunes for music and find GUI of PS3 inconvenient for sorting & searching music & creating playlist. Most of my music are in the form of mp3 and very less audio CD.

I have very limited knowledge about connectivity - so pardon my stupid questions.

What should I do withing 25-30k:

1. Buy two floorstanding speakers (Polk TSi 300 may be) and connect with TV (L & R slots). Is it workable? Will my TV be able to withstand these speakers?

2.I want to use PS3 as DVD player and cut the cost of an AVR. But my problem/confusion is I have not seen any audio output slot at PS3 except HDMI slot which is for connecting with TV. So what best I can use it for?

3. If I do buy a HT with AVR, then will it be possible to connect both PS3 & Dell XPS to it.

4. What will then happen to DTH? Should I connect it to TV or to AVR?

So guru's pardon my ignorance and please offer help. Thanx in advance.

1.If your requirement is Music then buy a pair of Audio Engine BookShelf Speakers or BOSE Companion 20. Connect the audio output (not the headphone out) of LCD to speakers. Check you TV manual.
2.Instead of connecting your laptop to the speakers buy a external hard disk and WD TV. You can listen music and watch movies whenever you want. Connect the WD TV with HDMI to LCD TV.
3.Connect the PS3 using HDMI to LCD TV.

I am using this same setup for connecting PS3,WD TV and TATASky HD to a single speaker (BOSE Companion 2)

25k - 30k you get a onkyo HT and can connect you ps3 and HD dth vi hdmi and use it..

that can be the simplest setup.. however it wont be like a music setup..

if you want stereo.. get a norge+ wharfedale BS combo or something in lines of cabridge audio and the stereo setup will cost you 20k.. rest 10k you can invest in DAC so you can connect audiofrom laptop and ps3 to them.

According to opinion of fellow members of this forum, ONKYO HTS 3400 is not very good for music.

I am inclined towards Norge + Wharfe BS combo but I could not completely comprehend DAC part. Can u please share some links about DAC. As per Norge site, 2060 is having 3 inputs: Aux,DVD & Tuner.

So how will I connect my source (TV & Laptop) to it ?

Wharfe BS setup requires seperate amplifier.Don't get confused by so many reply to your queries. As I said before if your usage is more for music listening then just follow my previous reply definitely you will be satisfied with the setup.

Along with HDMI, PS3 also has an optical out for surround sound. I also suggest that you buy a media player as they are really worth the money. However, if you dont wanna spend for one right now, you can use your ps3 itself and can even play mkv files on it using the PS3 Media Server.

1. Among Audioengine A5, Bose Companion 20 and Swan M200MKII which one is preferable?

2. About connection part : since audio inputs to TV has two part L-R, so how to connect output of speakers to TV (except Headphone out).

3. Please mention some details of your WD TV.

Thanx.

1. Please go to Bose Showroom and audition the Bose Companion 20 and Bose Companion 5. Companion 20 sounds better even without subwoofers. I don't know where you can audition Audio Engine speakers but i have seen at some apple showroom. If you are looking for a nice soundbar instead of a pair of speakers you can check the Polk IHT 3000,4000 and 6000. These has both optical and analog inputs. They sounds very good for both movies and music. Check Profx - Advanced Audio Solutions for soundbar.
2. Buy optical switcher for ebay to connect three optical source to soundbar.
3. To watch movies i suggest go for optical audio output for better clarity.
4. Western digital WD TV can play any video and audio formats. Please check the WD website.
5. In LCD TVs, apart from headphone audio output you will fine analog RCA audio output (in old models) and optical audio output (in recent models). Check the TV manual. But the optical audio output from TV will output only dts 2.0 not the dts 5.1. It is better to connect the WD TV and PS3 directly to optical switcher and the optical output to soundbar.

Mate, how much do the Audio Engine cost and are they good for use with flat TV as the sound on the set is really spoiling the mood.....have to keep the remote continuously in hand to + vol for dialogues and - vol when the background score increases...

Audio Engine Speakers are mainly used for Music Listening and in the sound recording studios. They cost you >15K. If you want to replace speaker for your flat TV better go for Sound Bar like Polk IHT 3000 and 6000. If your TV size less than 42inch check this Q Acoustics - Q-TV - HD Sound for your TV New flatscreen TVs are getting bigger and better. They produce crystal clear, pi....
Q-TV is available in bangalore for 21K. I have checked this and they sounds like a home theatre.

Friends, there is now a change of plan. Music man in me finally overcome the movie man. So, plan part 1: Get a decent stereo set up under 25K and use PS3-HDTV/Laptop as source.
Part 2: Get a HT set up when there is enough vitamin M.

I have so far tried my friends Bose iPod dock (SoundDock Series II Digital Music System) and Companion 5.0.

But none of the above is to my taste. I would like more clarity of sound - probably my taste belong to category of 'bright sound'.

I have contacted Norge and there is no way I can get audition in my locality. Most of forum members here rate Norge+Wharfedal combo as good entry level set up. However according to some, Wharfes are laid back and may not be bright enough for my liking. So what are other speakers suitable for Norge 2060.?

Another decent budget option seems to be NuForce Icon uDAC + Topping TP20 + Cambridge Audio S30.

As for active speakers, I don't know where to get Audioengine/Swan near Delhi. I mailed to Swan dealer in Chennai, but go no reply.

So guys please fire ur valuable suggestions to path a way out for me.

If your laptop has WiFi (it should...) use PMS to share content with your PS3. There's no need to physically connect it to anything, or buy some network hard drive.

the audio engine A2, if you're looking at them, i would like to caution you that these sets have been seeing some significant failure rate in india. please check some forums, and preferably talk to the dealer(s) at bajaao.com.

you could also check up on the wharfedale 9.1/9.2 or higher bookshelves. even am eyeing them :D the deal on them over here at HFV is till 31st of dec. IIRC.

Mate, i am looking for some temporary & cheap solution. As i might be shifting my residence by March / April dont want to invest in AVR + 5.1 Set as as of now.

I have the Onkyo 809 & MA / Polk on my radar once i have confirmed my new residence.

If you have a tight budget then look for some Altec Lansing or Creative 2.1 speakers , they are quiet good for the price and easily available in most computer shops.......

Guru's please wake up and help me finalizing the set-up. Since I don not have audition facility nearby so your invaluable comments will be the basis for my shortlisting.

My room is 12x16 feet, preference is music (artists like U2, RHCP, Jagjit, Shania Twain, Kenny G, Rehman and Bollywood stuffs) and budget is below 25k.

Which among the below would be preferable:

1. Norge 2060+Wharfedal Diamond 10.1

2. Norge 2060+ Cambridge S30

3. NuForce Icon uDAC + Topping TP20 + Cambridge Audio S30

4. Any other option (not used ones) ?

Please offer your suggestions.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
