Hi

Can anyone help me in getting a Step Down transformer to use a made in Japan amplifier in India? The maximum power consumption of the amp is approx. 270 as stated by the manufacturer and I was thinking a 1KVA Step down transformer should be just fine. However I need help in finding a good quality isolation step down transformer...

All advice would be appreciated.

Warm regards
Rahul Pandit

Hi friend,
I know one person who is selling quality 1.5 KV and 1.0 KVA step down transformers here. He has around 8 nos and said that he picked up these from American consulate in auction.
I have purchased 2 nos of 1.5 KVA and one of my friends also got one. They look brand new.

Hi Rahul

I am sure that there must be good local suppliers in your vicinity, like there are here. Worth checking with Delta transformers in Delhi if they can help you.

George

Bullet, since you are in Tokyo, nothing like picking up one there...There are a number of good companies making very good quality step down transformers which are a little expensive if shipped to India...which is why I am looking for a step down transformer here...
I can share the names of those companies if you want...Pls PM me if interested and if possible get one for me too (;-)

Dear George

There are quite a few people who can make it in Delhi but I am looking for a good quality transformer which can also act as a power conditioner of sorts if possible...The Japanese make great [power supplies but getting a transformer shipped to India works out to be very expensive...

I also checked with Maxine transformers in Chennai while searching on this forum only and wanted to know if anyone has a good experience with their transformers..

Will check out Delta transformers ..thanks..

Dear Shafic

I am sure they convert from 220-230 to 110-120 since they are from the American consulate...I need a transformer which converts to 100V ..
Would be grateful if you could check and confirm or share the friend's number so that I can contact him/her

panditji,

Problems associated with bringing transformer from Japan -

1. Weight >
Its really HEAVY, It does not make sense to buy it from here. It will eat full luggage limit. If you ship it then "original equipment cost+ shipping" would not justify buying from japan......

2. Price > I think it would be costly here

Few of my friend took TV from Japan and they purchased transformer from nehru place.
There is a thread going on, one guy getting rx-v575 from japan. he has arranged transformer locally. get in touch with him.

While they are quite hard-nosed when it comes to pricing, their products have been quite good from what I have seen. I know some pro-audio setups that have been using their step-downs without any issues over the last 10+ years...

My step down, for my Marantz pre pro is from Universal Transformers in Bangalore and I am quite happy with it.They are mfrs, so getting it down to 100V shouldnt be a problem for them. I had posted their number on a thread here let me see if I can find it.It is fairly heavy though.

Thanks very much for all the advice..I had called Maxine and they gave a quote of Rs. 9900 for a 1.5 KVA step down transformer..Isn't it a little expensive ? I am trying to search locally as well in the Delhi/NCR region...

Dear Bullet

I went to nehru Place today only and I would not trust most of the shops there...Still would'nt hurt if you could pass me some details or the thread link..

I too spoke to them today, for a 3KVA step down with in-built stabilizer(140-280), they quoted about 15,400. Last year I bought one from them, 3KVA step down with in-built stb(170-270) for around 8.5K. He said the price difference is due the lower voltages that the newer can handle. Unbelievable.

Note: Most of the time Maxine talk about servo-controlled step down only, if you have a specific requirement, please triple check before you confirm. First time I ordered I wasn't sure what I was getting. I called and asked them that I want an isolation type, but then I wasn't aware of these servo controlled, they said this is isolation type. Later I got educated more and realized this is in fact not an isolation type. I am don't know if the servo controlled are bad or not, but recently I spoke to a manufacturer of Online UPS, in the talks I told him about the servo controlled step down, he was kind of suggesting that I should have bought the transformer based isolation type only.
Disclaimer: I am not pointing fingers.

japan is 100V

I guess you have purchased everything from US (110 v)

Getting a 240- 110 is fairly simple, so many option available online.they are economical also.

Getting a 240 -100 bit tricky.

Not that tricky, I believe.
Lot of times, Maxine does give 110v on one output socket and 100v on the second out. They confirmed it when I spoke to them last time, couple of days ago.

Thanks very much for your help...I think I will educate myslef more before going to the local manufacturers...Do you think it makes sense to go for 2 separate devices - step down isolation transformer and a separate voltage transformer?

You are right about the isolation bit as I have been told and read that isolation helps in protecting your equipment incase of power surges...

panditji

please keep the thread updated, I need the transformer for my devices also once I am back.
