Hi,

I have Rotel RA-12 that has 60W/ch output. I am planning to buy a floorstander. I have to yet do the audition : Choices that I have thought are :

1. QAcoustics
2. Wharfdale
3. Elac
4. Polk
5. Dali

will Rotel RA-12 ( has integrated DAC ) be able to drive the floorstander ?

The source shall be : Marantz CD 6005 and sometimes via blutooth.

Needless to mention, this is only going ot be used for music.
Expectation : Tight bass , clear vocals.

Music that I listen to : Tamil, English, Hindi songs - not specific preference though - ranges from 80s to latest.

Thanks.

depends on the sensitivity and impedance of the speaker. Usually, 60W/ch true RMS is usually enough for home listening

Rotel is not an amp that pairs easily. Its best you audition it with the intended speakers before you buy it

Hmm, that's going to be a challenge then for me to find the right combo.

I got a chance to listen to Elac with Norge Mosfet amp
Dali Zensor 7 with Denon av receiver and also Norge stereo amp.

Haven't yet got a chance to take my Rotel for audition - all the above happened by chance - didn't plan specifically.

Elac + Norge - Combo is good, however the vol has to be at decent / sometimes high level to really make the speakers sing. Bass was controlled and tight. Vocals were super clear..

Only disadvantage that I see is that these are rear ported speakers so there should be sufficient space between wall and the speaker to avoid boomy bass. I don't; have that luxury at my place.

Dali Zensor 7 - With Denon A/V Receiver, it was just ok, ( Many in forum say Dali/Denon is good combo ) to listen songs - but I found it terribly soft, lacked the punch but pleasure to listen - I really wanted it to create a good impact but it didn't

The dealer changed the amp to Norge 2060 stereo amp( mosfet one ) - It's as though the speakers was expecting such power
- it was so lively.

My experience wise - (Dali Zensor 7 + Norge) > (Dali Zensor 7 + Denon )
(Perhaps I like bright sound ), vocals were too good with Norge.

Dali with Denon wasn't bad but compared to Norge, it was definitely not on par.

Dealer said with Rotel, definitely I should get better experience with Dali zensor 7.

I want to go for only Zensor 5, yet to audition though ( 7 seems huge for my room ), dealier is not having the same.

Advantage with Dali is that they are front ported so I believe I can keep them close to the wall

Hunt is on .., I would take some time to finalize.

The issue is because stereo amps are better than AV receivers for music in most of the cases. This rule does not apply for AVRs in league like Anthem but for general budget ones I have noticed that to be the case. This in general should explain why u find norge amp better than denon receiver.

From when I did auditions 2.5 years back, Rotel paired excellent with B&W and was very good with q acoustics. I have not auditioned Dali though. In general from what I heard, rotel pairs well with speakers having warm signature.

Thanks
Satya

perhaps it should pair well with Elac Debut F5 compared to Dali Zensor 5 ??

I would tend towards QAcoustics 3050 if you are firm on floor standers. 3020 bookshelfs too is a good contender, you can add sub later, if u need. Had listened the same combo at a friend's place (bookshelf) and it sounded very well to my ears. Crystal clear mids, crisp low and high end with no listening fatigue across various genres of music. You can give it a demo! Regards, Amit

Did you mean to also say that along with Rotel amp you had the audition ?

Isn't QAcoustics rear ported ? I don't have the luxury of keeping it 2 - 3 feet away from the wall, I may have to keep it close to the wall - in such a case, won't it sound boomy ?

I have heard QAcoustics is a class on its own

60 watts is more than enough power to drive most speakers which are reasonably sensitive which includes the ones you have mentioned.
You can also look at bookshelf speakers for a normal size room if you are more mid centric and prefer more controlled lows.

That said I have used both 2-way bookshelf and 3-way tower speakers (10 inch woofer) in a 10x10 room to good effect.

thanks, I do have bookshelf , want to upgrade to a Tower. As you said, the one that I have is good enough, but just wnat to try the Towers.

I still have both running. If you want to listen and gauge do drop in. I stay in Anna Nagar.

i had rotel ra-970bx which is 60 watts and i have built usher audio 2 way bookshelf speaker which is low efficiency around 86db/watt . 60 watts is more than enough for loud listening in home use. rotel did a good job with usher speaker.

Very important for you to audition with your amp, otherwise it may sound completely different with your Rotel than what you heard with other amps. Carry the amp if possible, what is your budget?

Norge concerto gold I am using since ten years. its very good for vocals but lacks that punching Bass. I am using a pair of vintage AKKAI 3 way bookshelf with 10" subwoofers. recently I replaced the woofers with 10" Argox sub woofers and pushed in a graphic equalizer (planet audio) between the DAC output and the Norge. so now I can increase and decrease the Bass. all adjustments is with the equalizer only. Norge is with flat setting. its worth the try. planet audio equalizer is available in Amazon for rs 3760/- and you need one 12v dc adapter to power it on. short the + and r (remote) connect the ground - (negative). it will power on. its actually for the car but blends perfectly with Norge amp. you can get really deep Bass with crispy Highs.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
