Suggestions for headphone system

@vivek: oh I thought you were talking of shure earphones. I have heard nothing but good about koss porta. But it's not over the ear but on the ear.

Does the denon AD2000 warrants such high price compared to others? If my wife comes to know that my headphone costs around 15k, I will need another headphone, an active noise cancelling one:sad:.
Does DT880 have a model with low impedance?

Guys.. was in same state.. few days back.. finally managed to get Sennheiser HD 2080PRO.. http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/04974_dj_equipment it never looks flashy.. but BIG.. i use for commute and movie with comp. such a beautiful sound.. clean as my Senn. PX 100... but large and weighty... its a very old running model..
occassionaly hear with Fiio E5... just to pump mood :) ..day by day finding it sweeter.. sound isolation is good enough for a bus ride.. in case if its ok to have a long coild wire hanging in neck.. ;).. any way i never cared..its worth the sound...

Have a look at web.. it costs around 5.5K Theitdepot - Sennheiser HD 280 PRO
all the best for search :) ... cheers, kannan

Rupak, also consider the senn hd 25 mk2. They are really worthy contenders, for lightweight, closed hps. Excellent resolution, imaging and works well without amping

How do they stand against the shure 840 or AT-M50- pricewise and quality wise?
How does one multi quote here?
@silva: why are you not using it?

is it true that the shure hps are very uncmofortable?

If you are new to over the ear closed headphones, any hp is going to feel a little heavy at the beginning. You will get used to it soon. I dont find mine uncomfortable at all, infact its very comfy and the earpads are big enough to encircle your ears rather than pressing on the ears.

I ve not compared it with m50 and shure 840, rather with the ad700 and hd555, and my impressions were as stated in the above post.
Edit: the ad700 is the most comfortable one.

As far as Sennheiser is concerned, I have narrowed down to HD 595 or 598.Sonically, i am not sure which one is better but 598 has a detachable cable- a huge plus point for me. How's the build quality of the senns? I found it to be a bit inferior- the whole body creaked but then it was long time ago.

Since I reside in a remote area I won't be buying the headphones from foreign sites. Can't run to the customs in a moment's notice(if it ever comes to that) nor can i take the risk or the anxiety of the prolonged transit. I Believe pristine note and lynx-india are good enough to buy from.

Thanks and take care

In case of use to anyone on this thread, I posted my experience of buying AT AD900 here
My buying experience was at Stereo, in Plaza Singapura, Singapore. They seem to have most stuff available for demo, and are happy to let the customer spend as much time as they want listening.

At first, I took the AD700s and AD900s for demo. I guess I would have been very happy with the AD700s, if I had not heard the 900s. The AD700s certainly sound great, but they are like listening to headphones, whereas the 900s made me feel like I was listening to speakers. I was using Mahler's 2nd symphony, played on my own Cowon portable, as my test piece, and, while the 900s could not build a real stereo landscape for me, as good speakers would, they gave a sense of space. Much more expensive: I asked myself, pretty severely, if I could really hear the difference. As objectively as I could, I answered, yes.

On recommendation from the staff, I also listened to Grado and Ultrasone 'phones. The Grado did not sound as good as the AKGs (but was still pretty damned good!)... the Ultrasones had a wonderful sound, but I did not like the on-ear fit. Sorry: I didn't note the model numbers.

I have never been a headphone man before. This is the first pair of serious headphones I ever bought. In the past, I have always disliked the sensations of weight on my head, and of being cut off from the outside world. The latter, of course, I got used to using ear buds when travelling, but still did not want to buy closed 'phones for use at home.

The AKG fit is nine out of ten. They are very, very light. They sit entirely around the ear (they are really big!); they are built for a head about half an inch higher than mine (I'll let you know the plastic surgery costs to factor in, after I get it done ).

I don't know if the velvet pads can be replaced. This is one thing I really should have enquired about in the shop but I thought of it too late. Quite how they are going to be for sweaty Chennai, we will see, but I think they will be better than more "clampy" phones would be. I am unlikely to be using them for multi-hour sessions anyway.

Yes, as already advised in the thread, they are noisy. I discovered recently that my wife can hear earbuds from across the room! To me, they are totally silent even three inches from my ear. We just have to hope the closed bedroom door will be enough in the night, when I will be using these things.
There are some very useful comments from others in that thread, not just about the specific special offer that started it.

Open cans: Grados- 80i, 125i, MS1 (alessandro)-will 125i justify the higher price against the other two?

IMHO, a big YES. Was in a similar situation sometime back. Pulled the trigger on the Grado 60i but couldn't resist the urge to upgrade so got myself the 80i and WOW the difference between the two was worth the extra cash. In case it helps, I also have the iGrado for my iPod. Now, eying for the 125i so please share your personal thoughts, in case you get the 125i.

Good luck.

Ordered Koss Porta Pro today through amazon (17.99 pound). Will be shipped through aramex.

Does it turn out to be cheaper and trouble free?

If i get the Senn 598, I won't be going for 125i but rather MS1i. But that will be in the 2nd phase.

Yes, I am pretty much sold on the 598. Guess I will have to do without an amp for most part of this year.
And what about replacement parts?- most probably it will be the cable that will hve to be replaced first.
The chapter of open back headphone is almost closed. Will have to shut the book on closed back hp soon
Get drown in music
