Hi
Just wanted to share my experience with amp repair.
I have a technics SU-X501 integrated amp which suddenly developed trouble with one of the channels. After going through the old posts here, i saw two options here in mumbai.

Akshay Jha and sanjay Raut.

Spoke to akshay first as he is closer in the western suburbs but he asked me to wait for a month and was not sure that even after a month he would have the time to take up the repair work, spoke to sanjay next and after a week of delay from my side went to him.

Sanjay runs an authorised repair centre for a couple of projector manufacturers and is based in Mahim.
He asked for a weeks time to investigate but suspected that the problem was with the system control unit.

In about 4 days he messaged me saying that the problem could be solved and parts were available and quoted a price.I agreed and picked up the amp the next day and its working fabulously now.Just wanted to thank the forum esp Hemant waghe, Denom and Jls(Joshua) for recommending his name in the forum various times before.

A couple of things though, the repairs costed me more than what i paid for a used amp 8 months back.
Sanjay promised to send me the details of what he had changed so that i could keep a record if/when i sell the amp to someone else which he didnt.

having said that i still feel he did a good job overall and being on the forum saved me a lot of running around and unnecessary heartburn and petrol.

Thanks a lot

what was the exact issue with the amp, what was replaced and what did he charge you? From the looks of it, the issue seemed a simple one and you've been overcharged.

Reuben, the problem is that it is "Seller's Market" generally for repairs and we are afraid of going to someone unknown without somebody recommending a new repairer.

the issues were that one channel was dead and the input selectors were not working.so even if i connected the laptop on the cd input i could hear the music on tuner or any other input.

yes maybe i was overcharged but he still seemed like the best option since there seems to be a dearth of professional service.the idea for starting the thread was to thank all those who has suggested his name in various threads earlier and encourage more fms to share experience and contacts.
thank for your comments.

true. I went to 2 other guys but didn't feel confident enough to give them my amp.Spoke to many neighbourhood service guys but they wouldn't even look at amplifiers leave alone repairing them.

times have changed. local guys seem to be busy with flat panel screens and other current things, parts are also not easily available for the older amps and everyone wants to make quick money. hence we land up with specialists.

Just my experience.....how some technical guys react when we are in distress.....and how the service matters than the cost.

I have a good old horse "Bajaj Legend Scooter" a 4 stroke variant of popular Chetak. Always, it is a problem for me to get repairs since the Bajaj have discontinued the model and supply of spares long back.

The normal problem is clutch wire cut due to normal wear and we can able to feel it well in advance. Before it completely disconnects, I used to get it replaced by my regular mechanic by paying Rs. 10 or 15 neat my house. Also, I use to keep a standby clutch wire in box since the cables are not easily available some times.

For my bad luck one day it was cut while driving, for which I have not prepared. But luckily I had a spare clutch wire in the box. Some how I could able to pull the scooter for a kilometer under hot sun and taken to a road side 2 Wheeler repair shop. Two guys, looking like mechanics sitting outside chatting without any work. I requested them to help me by replacing the clutch wire. Simply they have nodded their head. Once again I requested and offered to pay Rs. 25/- only for fixing work. They informed me that, they undertake repairs for only Bikes and not for Scooter. Even they don't touch the scooter.

What nonsense, they are the mechanics by profession and technically there is no difference between clutch wire function and repairs between Bikes and Scooter. At least, by looking my situation they could have helped me. But they are so strict and narrow minded. I forced to pull scooter for another mile.

Fortunately, another guy, at a Puncture Shop(Tube repair), helped me to fix this wire with his little knowledge and helped me. I had given him Rs. 50 with full heart.

After this incident, I am keeping both a clutch wire and a Cutting pier in the box and replacing the clutch wire myself.

With regards.

The average repair guys also take the easy way out. They repair only those equipment where they can diagnose easily and repair by easy replacement of parts and make money quickly. They donot have either time or inclination to troubleshoot problem with not so well known equipment which they may not be confident enough to repair.
i remember when we had a National Ecko valve radio in 80s which could be repaired only by a clerk in my father's office who had this hobby and it was several weeks before he returned it as he slowly and thoroughly went through the process of repairing.
