Topping TP20 tripath 2020 amplifier (versus NAD C320BEE)

Blankets on the glass shelf!!!!

...... wifey would perforate me with .32 ammo. I accept that would highten the 'hear' experience but am happy staying 'un-perforated'.

Speaker chioce with Tripaths

-------------
Choosing a speaker is cleared now with the Tripaths .... higher the sensitivity, the better the loudness possible without clipping issues. Speaker impedance has to be selected at 8 ohms. Balance left is the low end frequency aspect for the speakers ... lower would definitely bring out the subtle details which might get left out if higher is settled for. Well, that would mean emptying ones pockets more too.

Missed this out earlier, hence putting it down now:

Make sure that the speakers that you intend to use are always 'front' ported. That delivers the required bass with the Tripaths, more so, as the Tripaths are known to be bass inadequate.

This noted during my numerous speaker auditions.

My noob 'guesstimate':

The amp being of a very low wattage, the speaker cone travel is a 'bit' curtailed. This could create lesser air pressures within the speaker interiors. Looking at MY set-up, you would find the a rear ported design losing out on the effect due to the wall distance.

While, whatever little bass (the Topping provides fine for me, otherwise) is generated, if it is front ported, would come direct to the listeners. This, I guess, should provide for the higher bass .... I may be wrong, though.

Bass has nothing to do with direction. Nothing like if its front ported it comes directly to you and rear ported means it comes to you sideway after reflection etc

Rear and Front ported should be based on speaker placements. Some speakers, like Axiom though rear ported, benefit from the walls but some speakers need more distance from wall else will sound boomy (hey some of friends like this!). So its got nothing to do with T amps or for that matter any amp!

Its all about the room size and how you can place them, and what you like.

hey avidyarthy
good to know ur having a great time with ur T20.:clapping:
these amps are indeed like 'Little Giants'...

quick question....which speakers matched well with the T20?
which one was laid back and had a wider sound stage?

better still if you could all enlighten us on the characteristics of each of them auditioned with the T20...would be of huge help to ones trying to match the T20 with the right speaker....

MY bought-speaker IS the best .. :p ... :D.

Jokes apart, if you can afford the Klipsch RB 61, that was the best match. Well, you can also go for the bigger RB 81 II, which costs upwards of 55k for a pair.

JBL Control 1 is just 7.5k ...... ;)

Absurd price .... forget the exact, but close to 40 k.

A bit bright and forward sounding, but a great soundstage. I detest too much of laid back & mellow sound. Yes, it induces in some amount of fatigue but you can't get all .... have to sacrifice something to get what you desire.

are you serious you paired T20 with all the above

yeah, I am a madman .... check on my profile to see the listings which stop me on my tracks ....

You see, Kittu, the thing is, I stay in C.R Park, New Delhi.

This place is THE hub of hi-fi in this city. A not so wide lane is there which 'holds' almost all the known brands. My neighbour also imported a Topping about a month back, and both of us had nothing much to do after office, but go shop-hopping to check on the combinations.

That is the reason this herculean feat was accomplished in flat 15 days. Only difference being, my neighbour imported a TP21 instead of the 20. He is planning to get a full range speaker from the US now.

Avid, thank you .. glad to know you have auditioned all of them and found jbl control one to be the perfect pair @ right budget . :clapping:

In fact, I liked Klipsch RB61 II with topping. The horns will mellow down with some break-in which will cut down the fatigue. They are a good match for topping and they have their own signature added. They are not neutral and are like a good party speakers if I may add. They sell for 23k in US :) brand new with 5 yrs warranty and in craig list for 200 - 300$ :)

Avid: Pls use the edit button or quote/multi quote feature instead of replying for everyone in individual replies. You will save some server load and also is a best practice in forums.

Yes the speakers.Considering Lyrita, audire and acoustic portrait if they still cater to the budget end.
Or any high sensitivity used bookshelves now and upgrade to the single drivers later.
Exploring all possibilities.
Suggestions welcome.

hehehe @ psycho .... it should be touching 100 by now, I guess.

So, taking 10% sales commission on 4k, it comes to 40k owed to you by either us or Topping manufacturer ...:)

The latest on my system performance ... I am giving the Topping/JBL combo 98 on a scale of 100, assuming the 100 is put for my other stereo set-up of Norge 1000/Sony SS440. The slightly less marks on the Toppings is for a wee bit less on bass, else it equals the other set-up.

Coming to think of it, is it not possible for the Toppings guy to make a 5/7 channel Tripath based amp? The users can always get hold of a separate processor, say, the Emotiva UMC 1 and integrate it with the 5/7 channel amp and add on a powered sub-woofer of say, Velodyne/HSU/REL? The 5/7 channel speakers could be of 'specific' makes as per taste.

The above could topple the very best on offer at present!!!!!
