Topping TP20 tripath 2020 amplifier (versus NAD C320BEE)

>Finally got my topping yesterday

glad to hear that.

>2. On connecting to power, I feel a slight leakage current on the amp body. >I think some other posts also talk about this. This is there even if the amp >is switched off, it starts the moment the power brick is switched on. I >changed the 2 pin power chord provided to a 3 pin, but the leakage current >persisted. So the equipment may not be properly earthed (or, my home >wiring may be at fault, so I need to check that too). I am planning to add a >separate earth wire from the amp body to take care of this, if other checks >fail.

is it possible to get a better quality power chord for the topping? i don't think it is of great quality.

so how are you going to use the topping? with a cd player or connected to a computer? if the latter is it through the headphone jack or a dac?

Have upgraded from the Philips 3166 DVDp to Marantz 6003 CDp.

My good collection of MP3 discs have come to life ...:yahoo:. The CDs are also giving better output. The refinement in the MP3s is amazing, while that in the CDs is very noticeable.

It definitely makes sense to connect the Topping to a good CDp ......

@nandac - for now, I am planning to connect the topping to my MP3 player/iPod using a Y connector. I know that this is not the best option for SQ, but my main constraint here is size! This is for my bedroom system, and my wife had made it clear that she would not allow a big black box (read integrated amp or big CDP) into the room. So topping fit the need perfectly!
We do have very small DVD players these days, but those may not be the best for SQ. I am hoping that my wife will start enjoying the music so much that she will allow me to eventually move-in a larger CDP into the room:).
But for now, I will be using my main setup in the living room for serious listening, and the bedroom setup only for relaxing music/background music.

BTW, here's peter's (indeed-hi-fi) response to my query about the leakage current - "Don't worry about it, the 12V(-) negative point of adapter is not real grounding to third pins of AC power plug, so it has a bit leakage is normally."

Anybody in bangalore can audition their Topping set up for me...
Just wanted to know if is it worth spending additional 7k in gettin the Norge.
I understand that Topping is 25wpc and cant power towers, just wanted to test both of them before taking the plunge.
The set up is for Room of 10*10.
Sorry if my post is considered to be derailing from the topic....

@ Kittu
I mentioned additional 7K..
Topping costs around 4k including shippin additional 7k would add upto 11 and i can buy norge1000:licklips:

If iam buying topping its gonna be the tried and tested JBL control one or Ushers..
Actually confused whether the topping would really suit my tastes and provide me a audioholic experience Kittu.
PS:Auditioned Norge and was happy with it.Just looking at Norge to be future proof wen i buy towers.

Even I would like to see the topping strength with my mission towers. 4k :licklips:.

Any owners for a lending program :D.

Kittu bhai
I just mentioned is it worth going for a BS with topping amp( audition can help me ) or buy Norge 1000 with towers since will be shifting to a large room within a year.....
I dont think Topping has enuf juice to bring towers....

Folks (kittu, madhu_7) who want to audition Topping in Bangalore ? I can get mine if anyone is interested (along with JBL Control-1)

The only problem would be setting up a time :)

I have both the TP-20 & the Norge 1000, so my opinion may be of some help.

First, the Topping puts out only 13W (@ 8?) per channel (23 @ 4?). And I've seen reviewers who claim that the actual usable wattage is as low as 7Wpc.
Review : Topping TP20 Mark 2 - Audiophile Amplifier
IMO, these are true ratings and the TP20 with C1s can easily fill a 10x10 room. I have mine in a 15x12 room, and I never have to go beyond the 1 O-clock position on the volume knob. Most of the time it stays at 12 O-Clock position.

The Norge 1000 is rated at the 100wpc @ 8? (125 wpc @ 4?), but I think this may be a bit optimistic. But it is LOUD, no doubt about that. My Norge is paired with MS Carnival 6 floor standers.

The big question - which is better? Short answer - I prefer the Topping & C1s combo. There is a clarity & fidelity in the sound that is not evident in the Norge-MS combo.

Some caveats:

- Both my Norge 1000 & MS C-6 speakers are just a couple of weeks old, and I didn't have time to listen to them much. So maybe they need some more time to open up fully. I read that the Norge comes into form after about a 100 hours and that the MS speakers take upto a couple of months to settle in. So...

- I am using 2mm Finolex electric cables as speaker wire (for both Norge & Topping). Maybe the higher powered Norge needs thicker cables - plan to get thicker cable soon.

- The MS C-6 speakers may not be a good musical match for the Norge (I bought them primarily for movies). Norge has had excellent reviews when paired with the right speakers.

- I connected the MS C-6 speakers to the Topping. And, I cannot say if they sound better with the TP20, but the sound is "different". (I haven't connected the C1s to Norge, that is on my To-Do list).

So, if you are looking for a good hi-fi music system on a limited budget - you cannot go wrong with the TP-20 and the JBL C1s or one of the other tried & tested speakers which work well with the Topping.

If you go with Norge, you will not only have to pay 7K extra for the amp, but probably more on suitable speakers for it.

Cheers.
