TT for beginner - Need advice

May I request any Chennai TT proficient member to do an auditioning of the TT? The owner himself suggested it.

Hi,

I have heard the TT at Shankar's home and in his superb system. If I recall correctly the cartridge used was a Lyra.

The TT sounds very good. At the price it is being offered it is a steal. You will have to spend a lot more $$$ to get similar or equal performance from a new TT.

The TT is in excellent condition.

Regards
Rajiv

How are your Scheu plans ?
Obviously not at present. Let me start with Michell first. Then, if I find the merit, may think for switch over in future.

Now, the next question is Phonostage. Among the brands available in India, Trigon is one of the probables. It can be played with both MM and Low output MC cartridge. Any other suggestion?

Dont confuse between these two totally different worlds of LP playback, please. You see, a wrong start into TT can permanently derail you from analogue playback.

My personal favourite among all the Vintage TT brands is Thorens and one point I was extremely close to buying one but I realized that if I buy it I will still go around looking for a high resolution modern TT, what is the point :) ? As soon as I realized that I totally stopped looking at any vintage TT, no matter how good the deal is.

Thanks for a very interesting observation Dr Bass. In my extensive listening to a vintage Thorens with an All usher setup of pre/power/md2, I also noticed the slight cloudiness in an otherwise excellent and warm sounding analogue setup. Costwise, an equally priced modern TT , will fetch you a Rega RP3 or an equally priced Project etc.at the most. As I havn't heard these TT's , do you think these TTs though being more neutral will at least have some of the warmth and fluidity of the Thorens to some extent?
Regards

I'm also getting intrigued by possessing a TT. It will be my 1st ever vinyl experience..:licklips:. Now I'm looking to get one from here in India to begin my vinyl journey. I listen to Jazz, indian classical, ghazals, ambiance/chillout. Is there anybody selling his used TT with great/mint condition? or should I prefer a Project/Rega/Denon or somethign available in India? Kindly advise.

(Once I had interacted with Malvai for getting a TT from ebay USA but I lost that bid. Previous to that I had a listening session on a Technics TT at omishra's place in Pune which was a good experience for his cordial & friendly hosting. It was my fist experience so was not sure if I go for that, so I delayed and couldn't decide to buy that time. Recently I was with Sachin during mumbai HFV meet and had the opportunity to hear a lot about TT from him. I wish to visit his place to listen sometime.)

Dear Amit,
I would like you to visit set up of vintage TTs if possible and then decide on getting one. As rightly suggested by Dr.Bass, you have to dig deep into your pocket to buy a really good modern TT . IMO it is not worth taking the risk. If you don't like it, you may be stuck with it. Frankly, I am not impressed by most of the new TTs.(I don't want to mention the brands and model number). There is always a market for a Thorens 150. It's evergreen!

I agree with you.TD 150 will always have demand.

Congratulations amit!

I am quite surprised you aren't going for the Lyra also. A good price on a great cart. You could start with the phono Shankar is offering and easily dispose of it here later on when you move up to a better phono.

The Michell Gyrodec SE will be packed tomorrow at Chennai for its journey to Noida/NCR. May the Chennai HFV members suggest the availability of packing material specially EPE foam / thermocol etc. and the shops whereabouts. I will be staying at Adyar & will visit Ashoknagar area. Any clue nearby?

Regards

The Michell Gyro has reached safely last Sunday. Now it is to be set-up properly. This is the first TT I am going to ever handle. So, waiting for some help.

Why is it taking such a long time to set it up? Pictures and initial impression in detail is what we are waiting for. Hearty congratulations.

Regards.

Amit, congrats!! I think you should get in touch with a professional for setting up your TT if you are not sure. You can always play around later, but if you think it is more important to play the music quickly, get the installation done by someone who can do it quickly.
I just had Ashish@lakozy do setup for my home theater and they finished stuff in one day what would have taken me weeks.

Yesterday the Michell Gyrodec SE was set-up with the help of Viren ji. The TT is not at all cumbersome but precise engineering and every thing is in front of one's eye (nothing is hidden). The acrylic plinth, very cleverly minimised in size holds the spring loaded suspended chassis with arm board mounted on it.

Initially I thought to place the TT upon Hexa pod footing, but later found that it would not be a good idea, rather it should be set-up on a solid fixed surface. The spring adjustment screws are very easy in Gyrodec SE design, which helps very much in making the suspended rim horizontal. It took around 45 minutes to adjust the spring threads. Then Virenji came at around 3 pm. I did not put the Platter and bearing till Viren ji came.

The bearing oil pot was obviously dried due to transportation and got some dusts also. Can see here

Viren ji first cleaned the bearing oil pot thoroughly and put some bearing oil (which he brought in anticipation) upto the recommended level of 1-2 mm. Then bearing and platter were placed. The tone arm was mounted and cartridge (Denon DL 160, which Mr. V.Shankar the 1st owner gave along with the TT) was fixed and properly calibrated. The belt was put. and presto the first vinyl was put.

The phono amp was Lyrita, brought by Viren ji, as I am yet to purchase a phono. The 1st song was of Lata Mangeshkar, the music was quite enjoying except some faint brightness. The cart is not burnt in and may become mellow after about 50 hours. Next we have played a LP of George Benson. It was also good. Overall I am happy.
My sincere thanks to Viren ji for his help and active support. Due to his vast experience, the set-up was absolute smooth.

Next hunt is for a phono. The Dl 160 is a high output MC cart, so Lyrita phono may be a choice to start with. I came to know about an used Lyrita phono on offer. Let me check with the owner.

Very happy for you, Amit, and thanks to Viren for helping you set it up. However, we need to have a few more pictures which shows all areas clearly from a few angles. Get a phono quickly and start listening.

BTW, Dr. Bass came to visit my place today, on his way back to Singapore. Pratim also showed up. We had a very enjoyable time, chatting and listening to a variety of music.

Regards

Congrats Amitnoida. Try and get a phono amp with adjustable gain setting and various load settings. It will be more versatile letting you try out various cartridges

@amitnoida: exciting times for you. Following your phono stage hunt closely though I am not in the market for one.
