TT for beginner - Need advice

Hi Friends,

i was also strugling with this issue, because of the feed back, the bass was very much effecting, and every time i had to reduce the bass, i tried out few easy things and this worked out for me, so thought to share with you, pretty simple though

1. put a thick layer of thermocol underneath the table legs on which the TT sits

2, take 4 thick ( 1-2 inch ) sponge square blocks ( 3 X 3 inch ) and place it under neath the legs of the TT

that is all i did

Hi,
I have filled my Technics base with 500 Lb of Plasticine, and placed 2 Squash balls cut in halves under my TT.It worked for me,cheap but effective solution.

Thanks Tanoj for your suggestion.

My box bed is quite heavy made of solid wood beams and solid wood head & leg boards. It is quite stable. But still I may try with thermocol below the legs.

Now, regarding sponge square blocks underneath the legs of the TT, I have some doubt. Because of the softness of the sponge, the TT may not remain in the horizontal position. Have you experienced any kind of this issue?

Thanks Sachin for sharing. BTW what is Plasticine? And 500 lbs is a hell a lot of weight!

Suggestion of 2 squash balls cut in halves under a TT is very workable and can be tried by me.

Hi,
Plasticine is modeling clay.I couldn't find in my city so ordered from Amazon UK.Sorry it was 500gms.Many people use non hardening modeling clay to stuff audio equipments like TT,speakers etc for damping.I had bought it from here through shopyourworld Newplast 500g White Plasticine: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

Any one in bangalore having a good turntable with a high end pre and power amp? would like to check and buy a similar one. Basically looking at a system that can give me an excellent bass and treble for listening to tamil and hindi songs specially the tabla ones..would be grateful if someone can help recommending amps, turntable and matching speakers for a 14 by 12 study/bedroom..

One can find modelling clay from toy shops too.

Yes,but it should be non hardening oil based clay, water based clay will harden after some time and lose its damping effect. It may also contain salt (sodium chloride)in this is case, your metal work will corrode.Earlier I also used Play Duh,bu got good advise on Vinylengine, one VE member directed me to Newplast Plasticine.See this thread for clay stuffing:

Hi shiva,

A pre-power combo for that room size may be a overkill. A good TT (say Technics DD with Audio Technica/ Shure-M97xE cartridge) connected to Marantz PM6003+MS Aviano-2 BS Speakers will be more than sufficient, for your music preference.
If you come to Chennai you are most welcome to audition my audio gear.

One of you mentioned that the plinth is very heavy. I am wondering, without meaning to be rude, if it makes any difference. Nothing else in the TT bears its weight. Beyond a certain point, incremental damping by making the plinth heavy may be hard to achieve.

Let me post the update on my search for a TT. During last two months I actually couldnt progress at all except collecting about 40 Bengali and Hindi LPs from used market from Kolkata.
After listening different TTs from the available brands in India I more or less decided for Scheu.
Options are:
1) Scheu Cello with Rega RB251 arm
2) Scheu Premier MK-II with Thomas Schick arm (to be purchased separately)

Price-wise the above two combos are wide apart. I have contacted Mr. Thomas Schick and asked him whether his tonearm will perform well with Scheu Premier. He recommended it and praised Scheu table for their dynamic performance. The Thomas Schick tonearm is 12 arm and costs about 900 Euro with stock fixed lowest capacitance cable and Neutrik RCA plugs.

Also, there are Finewire option with additional cost:
Tonarmkabel Finewire C37, Standard RCA connector (hollow pin, low mass)
100 cm: 139 Euro
125 cm: 159 Euro

Tonarmkabel Finewire C37+Cryo, Eichmann Bullet Plugs
100 cm: 219 Euro
125 cm: 239 Euro

Does the wire & plug upgradation makes sense?

The Forum members have imported different TT / tonearm / cartridge / spare parts from abroad. Do you have any specific advise to avoid customs complications?

Along with Thomas Schick tonearm I would go for Denon DL103 cartridge. Any recommended source / site to purchase it. I have heard that Denon DL103 cart is in short supply now.

@Gvenu,
Of-course, hand carry is the best option. But I don't have any scope for that. Whether any specific courier do good job in this respect?

Option 2 of course !!

I had handcarried since last year i had to travel to europe almost monthly..you can request Thomas to ship with a declared value ot 100USD and declared as a gift. coming via german post it would come vie indian postal (not EMS) but it is still ok.
But how much time would it take for him to make ?
The Scheu Classic Unipivot is also not an option you should dismiss..that also goes great with DL103 ..and has a 12"option as well. If i had known it I would have gone for that as there is something special about a Unipivot design.

for DL103, you can contact this ebay seller since he is in HK, it works out better

I am always a little weary of Chinese and HK sellers. Pay a little more but buy from a Japanese, US or European seller.

What about phonostage ? Have you shortlisted any ?

fyi, as Arj says a Scheu classic tonearm would be a more logical choice simply because the sonic difference between two good tonearms is the most difficult to detect. In your case the extra $$$ paid for Thomas Schick over a Scheu classic will be most likely for aesthetics than sound. Those extra Dollars, if spent on a better phonostage or a better cartridge (DL-103 PRO) would give you significantly audible upgrade in sound.

The phonostage may be Trigon.
The logic you have put for Scheu Classic tonearm can not be dismissed. Also it will save a decent sum and there would be no hassle for separately import it. But I am slightly afraid to start with a Unipivot arm.

Regarding cart, I am open to go for higher version of DL103. In fact I was thinking for DL-103R at about 150 USD additional cost over DL103.
Is DL-103 PRO a significant upgrade from DL-103 or DL-103R?

103PRO is the best 103 variant, this is what many 103 users say. The 103R still remains a sort of debate but the PRO version has nailed it, this is as per feedback on many forums. I dont have any personal experience with either.

Congratulations on being one more step closer to spinning some vinyl Amitnoida :) if you're considering the rega consider the origin live ones. Might as well spend a bit more and get a good tonearm in the beginning itself.
