TT for beginner - Need advice

Heard the Dr.Feickert as well. Good but a bit unexciting for my taste. Lacked PRAT basically.

ditto here!

though coming back to Amit's quandry....

like Dr. Bass aptly put it, 70% of the sound is determined by the motor+ Plinth+platter, hence i'd say at first one should go for the best TT + tonearm that money can buy at that particular time... forget about spending too much on the cart and phono at first....

the TT & tonearm ar the basic foundation... plus when you buy a TT and tonearm here in india, it woul be darn tough to sell it for something better later.... so make sure you buy the very best your money can buy... compromise on the cart & phono at first...

get used to working with vinyl with this...

then, in the next few months as the corpus builds up again, buy a good cart + phono...

this approach helped me tune my TT rig to its true potential without wasting money...

the cheapie cart & phono that I beagn with are still around as a backup... and thank hevens for that!

because when my ref cart went in for retipping (its been 6 motnhs since its been with sound-smiths) the cheapie one is doing its duties!

oh, by the way, I have heard the new VPI Classic 3 with a Clearaudio Stradivari Cartridge and a Accuphase AD 20 Phono board on a Accupahse E450 amp and it sounded detailed, lush and simply heavenly! I'd say this turntable is good for the money! i liked it almost as much as i like my own TT. almost.

didn't like the new Thorens as much, though. The VPI Classic 3 punches way over its price point...

just my 2 humble cents!

Hi Dr Bass

I heard it on some horn speakers so did not feel the Dr Feickert lacking in immediacy and timing

I heard it twice, once with the Avant Garde Duo powered by all Kondo electronics and second time with my AKG Q701 headphones powered by my Bravo headphone amp. Both times the same impression remained. This is a problem with TT audition though, the whole chain comes into the picture.

I agree with you Dr Bass. The whole chain comes into play. With the Avant Garde, normally there is an issue of bass integrating with the rest. I would avoid auditioning equipment on Avant Garde unless i am very sure its perfectly set up.

One aspect, which I like to share. My audio platform is actually a solid heavy box bed (mattress removed). The amp and CDPs are placed on 'Agora' isolation pods. The speakers are placed on stands at the two ends of this box. I don't have any other space to shift this furniture and place an audio rack there.

I have to place my amp in the middle and the CDP and TT in left and right side of the amp. After placement of the TT, there would be hardly 10-12'' gap between the TT and one of the speakers.

Will the audio feedback and sound wave from speaker make the sound of TT muddy?
If so, What can be done to resolve it?

Regards

Hi,
You will most likely have a feedback problem. You can place your TT on wall mounted shelf.

Coming back to the Thorens TD309 TT that you heard at AD. I have heard the same setup at the Bangalore hifi meet. You are unfortunate that you heard one of the worst example of TT sound. I dont know how good is that Thorens but that setup with Heko speakers is a pure HT material. Boomy muddy bass, recessed rounded mids, no details. It is sad. Do try to listen to another Thorens someday.

You are right Abhi. The total amp+speaker set-up was not good for audio. The boomy bass was all along disturbing. And there was no detailing.

So, Thoren needs one more round of audition. Hope Laokzy Delhi will have it for demo one day.

Wall mounting is not practicable in my drawing room becuse my LCD is already wall mounted. Is there any heavily damped TT, which can reduce / eliminate the Audio Feedback problem?

The amp used were 'Exposure' integrated and power amp to give more current to the speaker.

Exposure is supposed to be pretty decent. So I guess the bad sound is completely attributable to the speakers.

If you are looking for something that is completely unaffected by external vibration, VPI Classic is the table to get. It is almost vibration proof.

Noise rejection allowing the Classic 1 turntable to sit on a wood shelf near four 15" subwoofers and having virtually no feedback

The above is what the manufacturer states about the table.

Hi,

Linn LP12 with Trampolin baseboard.

The Linn should be in your list of turntables to audition.

not sure if it would help, but why can't you keep your TT in the middle? Is the speaker wire too short to move amp farther from one speaker?
